Pat White was not supposed to play, and be cut. Yet, he did, and played well going 4 for 4 for 27 yds while running for a first down on a 5 yd gain. Yes, it was vs 2nd and 3rd teamers but, he did everything he could have done. There was no deer in the headlights, he can hit the broad side of a barn, and, to be fair, he was not throwing to Marshall or Bess. So, what the hell is going on here? Sparano told everyone he was not going to play. He does not change his mind without a reason. Do we have an offer for Thigpen, as some friends have told me? It is confusing. Thoughts?
Thigpen was showcased last week.White got his chance this week. There may be some fishing for a draft pick or player swap involved. We are not keeping 4 QBs . Thigpen would bring us more value so I have to think he would be the odd man out especially if Penny looks to be healthy enough to play backup.
No don't say this, i was all on the thiggy being showcased wagon then retracted my statement. This regime is a mind F---!
Mine as well Padre. I went to the game, on to South Beach, and watched the recording at 2 in the morning. Not nice to confuse me today. LOL
White didn't embarrass himself, but he still has a ways to go. In fact, if the #1 O hadn't poo-pooed all over itself, would we have thought that White did anything special ?? I am not sure what the outcome of the QB situation is going to be, but if a deal isn't done with Thigpen or White soon, it'll be too late for us to get anything for them... I'm not convinced that White is the real deal, but then we don't see him every day of the week like Sparano does. I just don't think, based on what we have seen and this weeks' work notwithstanding, that White is ever going to be a legit QB in this league. I've been wrong before so there's a good chance I'm wrong now, but show me something that indicates that we're wrong about White ??
Oh yes, maybe a bit too many head games going, the players though have to love it as they do wind up with a chance to play, but I do happen to think it also harms building cohesion in units. Now the thing with White is he just threw a couple of dirt simple passes, he has to show he can make NFL quality throws like deep outs before anyone should read more into it. i'd really like to see him have a half to show what he can, or cannot do. I will say though, his quickness looked improved on his run.
I think we can hold on to thigpen or white and trade them. Someones bound to either get injured or just suck it up, in which case teams will be looking for a qb. As for white playing I wouldn't be surprised if they were just trying to light a fire under his ***.
CT, My confusion lies with Sparano telling everyone that White was not going to play, and then doing an about face. It's out of character for him. The late time out , before the penalty allowed Atlanta to run the clock out, showed me Coach wanted to see more. Aside from all this, Pat White did play well. Go figure.
maybe the PatPackage is in tact & ready to be released during the regular season. just never know w/ this FrontOffice...only after the fact. nothing would surprise me. having said that w/ the offensive line playing the way they've played so far in the preseason, you might see more of the unconventional offense than most have suspected
I'm thinking more of a Pat Cat, which was originally intended. He did show that he can now do that much.
Eh, typically he does, last night was the first time I've really watched White drop back and "see" over the offensive line if I'm explaining that properly? White played as if he saw the whole field for the first time in a game A13, as if maybe he figured out how to see throwing lanes over the 6'3 Olinemen. I really would like to see more of him against Dallas to see if that was just a fluke, or if his skill set has improved.
2 teams come to mind in the last minute hunt for a serviceable QB: Arizona and Chicago. With Lineart being benched, looks as if his days in the desert are done, and in Chicago, Martz has yet to fully endorse Cutler and I think wants a fallback plan. If a deal is in the works, those would be the obvious choices. The real question is, what do we get from them?
After watching Sparano's post game interview, I would hate to be one of the guys in the trenches for this weeks practice. He was a pissed as I have ever seen him. Even the press cut everything short.
Sparano said his 4th QB would not play. Media added (Pat White). He never called names. I think his 4th QB didn't play.
I dont know .Possible reasons. A--They dont want to cut White without having given him a chance to play.Maybe they will give him more playing time next week. B--They will figure out a way to keep both of them as long as they can until injuries in the rest of the NFL will peak interest in one of our backups...most likely Thigpen. This will depend on if Penny looks solid. C..The conspiracy theory......We are sandbagging Pat's talents only to reveal them at a special time.
D. They've already decided that White is not going to make this team but wanted to try to possibly showcase him some... I still think it's too little, too late for White...
Actually, Sparano never technically said White wasn't going to play. He said he didnt envision his 4th qb playing. Well for last night, thigpen was the 4th qb and did not play. That doesnt mean he's 4th on the depth chart but last night he was our 4th qb.
Its pretty simple... 1. He is not as good as Thiggy, Penny, or Henne (nor does his name fit into the rhyme scheme) 2. He has really shown nothing to indicate that he will be more than a 3rd stringer in this league.
We could call him "Patty" or "Whitey," and his name would fit the rhyme scheme as good as "Thiggy." LOL
He was drafted as a QB in the 2nd round by the greatest organization in pro football. Enough said. Now what's my prize?! Runner up answer: He's still on the team. IMO his performance was irrelevant to the 1st team unit. Pat did his job last night. He made 1 heads up play while accurately putting the ball in his receivers hands.
Anyone who is thinking of a trade right, think about this logically. Cut down day is coming and some QB's are bound to hit the market and be available sans compensation to their former team. On top of that, you have to have a team conviced enough to bring someone into their team that is already better than players that have been in camp the entire time. The chances of both of those things happening aren't very good. Only a few teams appear to be hurting at the QB position right now (NYG, ARI)
I like B and C...... and I like C even more now with the whole "Parcells reluctantly drafted Pat and didn't think he'd pan out in the NFL" issue. I'm calling bull$#!t here. Color me ignorant but I don't see him trashing one of his current players like that unless he's trying to bend over the league..... and by league I mean Belichick.
I'll give ya' he's still on the team... And his performance is/was irrelevant to the 1st team. He even showed the best he's ever shown before, but do you keep what appears to be, at best, a 3rd string QB on the roster and let go of someone who has shown he can step in and play if needed (Thiggy) ??
I'm honestly very surprised Thigpen isn't already in AZ. Maybe they're waiting for Anderson to face-plant as well.
doesn't arizona have derek anderson?seems they wouldn't go out and get yet another 2nd string qb this late into the preseaon unless there was an injury. as far as white playing.i wonder how much of it had to do with ross feeling some heat in the pr department with alot of fans including me(not a big fan but it was still kinda f'd up the way they were handling it) feeling like white wasn't getting a fair shake when it came to the back-ups playing those first 2 games.
This is it, Id like to just see a large chunk of playing time. I can then embrace the kid or feel at peace letting him go!
Gotta figure if Anderson starts you'll need a backup for when the wheels come off the wagon and it doesn't look like Lineart will be that guy, meaning they've got to be investigating all their options. It wouldn't suprise me to see them chase Thigpen or even Pennington. JMO
This is only supposition but MAYBE the plan all along was that Thiggy was acquired as a temporary stopgap and that we would trade him when the time was right. However, after his 8 pass/2 INT game, MAYBE we felt we needed to redeem him with the rest of the league. MAYBE that's why Thiggy has been seeing so much action..... to boost his stock level after that chaotic performance vs Pitt. If Pat has been "the guy all along in their eyes", then it makes more sense to keep 4 QB's and trade Thiggy during the season when he commands more. IMO an extra 4th round pick is more valuable than keeping a player at another position who is on the bubble and might never see action.
