wow! First of all, it isnt just Europe. Soccer is the entire world's favorite sport. Then, this isn't soccer. Im sure there's a bunch of gay football players as well. And most football players wouldn't last playing a soccer match just like most soccer players wouldn't last in a football match. They're different sports, they're both my favorite ones, and I hope that one day in the U.S., it will end up being one of the big sports.

    LMAO!!

I saw this vid right after I watched your ESPN Fear video.

Had a feeling I'd see it around these parts.

PS. No Italians were seen in the above video.

    EDIT: 0:31 is disturbing.

There may be gay football players, but there aren't any engaging in openly homosexual acts. I'm not even saying there's anything wrong with. I'm just saying that it completely accurate to say that is a difference between the sports.

As for soccer ever being one of the big sports here, I doubt it will ever happen. We've been hearing for thirty years how soccer is the sport kids play most often so they will grow up to love soccer and it just doesn't happen. These kids grow up and their favorite sport is football. I think whenever somebody is given a choice football wins easily. I even see it amongst the Mexicans here in town. They all came over here being soccer diehards. Now they still say they love soccer and they love football, but when I see the passionate arguments, they are about football. When they talk about betting, they're talking about football. IMO soccer may be the world's most popular sport, but that's b/c of history and lack of choices and in-spite of the sport.

    Football >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Soccer

Soccer will never catch on for the same reason Hockey will never catch on. Americans like scoring and watching people get hit....at least hockey has that. Watching soccer feels like youre watching players run in place. I want to gouge my eyes out every time I try and watch a soccer game. I've actually tried really hard to like the game and I dont question the degree of difficulty but in my opinion it's about as interesting as Golf. The rest of the world can have soccer, us "lowly" Americans will take football.

I'm probably biased, since I'm European, but soccer is the best sport in the world IMO. It's my favorite and I try to watch every game I can. I used to play it too. Sometimes I wonder how it would be if I stayed over there...

Why do you think ppl yell and scream so loud when there is a goal? They are startled and it's only an instinctual reaction. :shifty:

Latinos will be assimilated by the NFL.

    Resistance is Futile.

Athletes by the nature of their work are quirky, football players smack each other on the ***, however a similulated BJ of a teammate out in the middle of the field is a bit much no?

You will never convince the haters that soccer is fun, and you'll never convince soccer fans that it sucks.

All I'll say is that I was a lifelong NFL-only guy. A couple of trips to soccer matches to watch live quickly changed my perception. I think we'd be ignorant to think the same wouldn't happen to some of you if you gave it the chance.

I'm a season-ticket holder to the Seattle Sounders (MLS team up here), and up here we have the benefit of being allowed to use Qwest Field for every match. We pull over 36k people to every home match up here. The atmosphere is louder & much better than Seahawks games (no puns or jabs against seahawk fans here, I really mean the crowd & atmosphere is entirely different). A bigger bonus is you get to go to Qwest & enjoy the gameday experience on the cheap compared to NFL, with season tickets starting at $400. You also get twice the matches for that price, than you do for NFL.

I love my Dolphins and have for over 2 decades; but the atmosphere at a Sounders match at Qwest Field kills anything that Sun Life has to offer, as far as gameday experience. People here use flares, smoke bombs, wave huge flags, and put up these immense displays (called tifo) that cover entire sections of the football stadium. People don't sit down. Instead, they are standing & cheering the entire time. You have more people yelling, chanting, singing than you do in any other professional sport here. You don't see this stuff at NFL games. :)

I do think Americans tend to have shorter attention spans, which is why sports that have higher scoring tend to do better. That doesn't mean soccer isn't fun to watch. There is so much behind the movement & strategies, and the lack of high scoring makes every score that much more important.

It's definitely easier if you have a local team to support; then you can become emotionally invested and it's easier to follow the players. Hopefully Miami FC can come online in the MLS soon and many of you will have opportunities to take in a match, live.

If you want to see Qwest during a typical MLS match, this is a panoramic shot of how packed it gets, around 37k people:
    http://www.randomnesspersonified.com/Images/Sounders/10-29-09/Qwest_Houston_Panorama2.jpg
(linked since it's over a megabyte)

Also, Qwest gets LOUD during the matches, too. Taste of how loud it gets after a goal:

I won't say soccer is "better" than NFL. Each has its merits. All I'm hoping to do is show you that this lifelong pigskin guy was able to appreciate soccer, I'm sure many of you could as well if you gave it the chance.
