Want an indication of how the season will be like at first?

Check out pre-season game 3 when the starters are in for most of the game.

Thats when you know they've been working for awhile now and the rust should be gone and there is a game plan (maybe not a real full one).

Game 1 is always sloppy and this goes back to the Marino years so I dont care.

But come game 3 we should expect to start to see things comming together.

If by that game we see the same thing we saw last night, then you can start to ask WTF?

23rd, I love your posts...you sound just like my mother...if the team doesn't beat up on whoever they play by 50 points, she goes bonkers...I'll bet your wife/girlfriend/significant other hates watching the games with you....LOL

Seriously, it is what it is....a preseason game with a bunch of young players in there on a terrible field. The rain wasn't the issue, but quagmire was and the Bucs were almost never in that muck offensively...

That said, it was the same for both teams and there are no excuses except for bad play. Again, I say though, if Marshall and Hartline catch those easily catchable passes, Henne stats are somewhere around 8/11 and 79 yrds and maybe even a TD. Would that not make Henne look a lot better ?? Would we not have changed the tide of the offensive woes with a little success (by Marshall catching that one over the middle for 30-50 yrds) where it changes the field position (or scores) and everything else...hey, at least it would have gotten us out of the muck...

I don't see the issues with Henne....yet. We have known all along that he is one of the many questions facing this squad. He showed some very good and some not so good last season. This is his time to step up, but having a rough start in that situation and in the first preseason game is not worthy of fretting about...

    Friend Larryfinfan:
    1) I think Henne will pull it together before the first regular season game, however, I continue to not ordain the guy before he proves himself on the field & Marino-2 simply did not look good last night
    2) don't care if we win by a point. what's important is that we play to win. having said that... I do like to beat the other team up a little bit in the process. I enjoy the brutality & competition of the game
    3) excuses don't cut it this year. if a BullFrog had wings he wouldn't bump his azz. it is what it is... time to contend.

One preseason game and some of the fanbase is already on the cliff.
This is the worst thread of the season and it comes after just one exhibition game. Get a clue people and realize what these games are. The expectations of the preseason are ridiculous.

Just rewatched the game. Henne had a bad first series, but his throws were much better in the second series. I thought in general he made fairly good decisions and made pretty accurate throws.

    Overall, I am not worried.

23rd, I do agree that Henne has yet to prove himself. He didn't accomplish that last year, although the signs looked good.

I do disagree that he was all that bad last night. Everyone seems to discount those misses. They were thrown timely, on target and without undue velocity (as is one of his weaknesses), but for reasons of either lack of concentration or simply wet balls (yes, I meant footballs...hehehe), they were missed and made his body of work look a lot worse than it really was.

That said, if we don't take the next step this year, Henne, Pennington, Marshall, Dansby, Sparano, Ireland, Parcells, etc are all on the bubble. One preseason game is not enough to start calling them out....IMHO....

This makes no sense. 23rd you say that you dont want to annoint Henne but thats what you`ve been doing all summer long. With all due respect frequently in your multi-colors and prose like post you`ve praised Henne and called him ice man and the future. In fact you are the one that in almost every Henne thread has a post that says "the ice man cometh". To allow a few series in the rain and mud (that while i did not see the game it sounds like those incompletions were drops)
to completly change your view on him is the largest knee jerk reaction and completely assinine

Why would you give up on Henne after ONE game? Especially it being a pre-season game in the pouring rain when his reciever are dropping all of his passes.

Don't be so quick to jump to conclusions because Henne WILL prove you wrong.

Gotta disagree brother, one was two feet behind and one was three feet in front (went back and relooked, I was wrong on it being three feet in front, in fact it was a good throw bad catch) and one was aimed at the ground so as the only way to catch it was to play patty cake in the mud? The weather was bad and Henne must do his part to put the ball on target. Henne, Marshall, and Hartline did not click period. We do play real games in bad weather you know and I expect Henne and the two best WR's we have to help us win those games or we will NEVER see a SB with this three Amigo set!

BTW the Buc's QB had no such problem yet played in the same rain and mud!

Henne's performance in this first preseason game DOES beg discussion - at LEAST - even if it's all we have to go on for now.

WTF else you want to talk about?!

And I reiterate the same point I made last season about the thread rating system: it is a goddamn DISGRACE the way some of you use it and you really should be ashamed of yourselves.

A thread which generates 3 pages of discussion HAS VALUE, pinheads - it is NOT a one-star thread.

I'm really disappointed that many people are blowing that crappy game out of proportion. Let's look at some of the other games this weekend.
    -Cowboys starters scored 3 pts
    -Texans starters scored 0 pts.

Both of those offenses are considered top 10 in the league. they didn't look good in their first preseason game. Does anyone here think they will stink it up this year? I doubt it

The more I read junk like this, the more Olindo Mare becomes my most hated Dolphin player in history.

Don't blame the Marlins for the Dolphins' struggles.

Bingo. Josh Freeman, Mike Williams, and Sammie Stroughter had no problem whatsoever on the exact same field.

It was just a preseason game, but when a 3-13 team executes better in the same conditions, there's cause for concern.

    1. It was against our vanilla defense, we were showing nothing in a preseason game. That is not how the defense will operate.

    2. Badly thrown, was one. The second drop by Marshall should have been caught it was right there. The drop by Hartline, hit him in the chest, you gotta catch that. All 3 of those balls were catchable. Marshall usually pulls them in, but lets be honest, it's the preseason.

    3. I would rather all this now then in September

ONE and FIRST preseason game, we won but didn't look good/great. I guess we might as well forfeit the rest of the games and cancel our season because from what I'm reading in here, the season is already lost.

    NOT!

I agree with those who thought Henne was pretty good. Obviously he missed a couple reads, such as when he hit the RB on 3rd down from the endzone. Henne went off the field and got an ear-full! Wonder who he missed?

Larry, I totally agree, but his stats would've probably looked even better than 8/11 because the drive would've also kept going if Marshall or Hartline caught those passes.

Honestly, I'm still more worried about the secondary than anything. Smith and Davis still get burned too much...

okay maybe I am not putting as much pressure from a fan standpoint as brother 23rd is, but I have to admit I agree with him.....it was typical Miami Dolphin avg football, one game or not in the preseason, not running the true gameplan or whatever, I still want to see execution of any gameplan...the rain?? what happens if it rains or snows in the playoffs....?? too many checkdowns by Henne, TB's offense completed some nice passes downfield...speaking of which, Why does Miami CB's refuse to get their head around?? Why?? Smith all of last year, Vontae on that beautiful pass by Freeman the other night....these kids refuse to get their heads around...Ronnie was decent, Micha Johnson was decent, Misi was decent, Brandon Fields was the MVP.....Soliai and Ness fattened up on 2nd and 3rd teamers....

Look at the Pats, they came, smacked up the world champs, excuted their gameplan in Foxboro to plan, and told them to go back down South.....Miami struggled with a bad football team...

That being said it doesnt count, I am not nervous(yet), but I didnt see good football, and certainly expect better in game 2....

I imagine that many of the people who rated this thread so poorly, did so before it became a 3 page discussion. And it's not really up to par, in my opinion, mostly 1 or 2 guys grilling our QB who had a pretty forgettable game in the muddy monsoon in our first preseason game and 3 pages of almost everyone else rolling their eyes. While I haven't rated this thread yet, that qualifies to me a pretty poor rating.

The one pass deep pass on the sideline in the first quarter that Vonte gave up was just a combination of a good plays by the QB and the WR. It was an excellent throw and a great job of catching and the WR keeping his feet in bounds.

There is a saying in coaching, and maybe it's different in the NFL not sure, but you can't blame the player for getting beat if he executes his assignment as instructed. Basically if you tell a DB to make sure he doesn't get beat to the inside ( aka inside leverage ) of the field, you shouldn't yell at him if he gets beat to the outside of the field ( out route ).

The defensive call looked like Man Free. A blitz w/ man to man coverage and one deep safety. Generally, to my knowledge and I could very well be wrong depends on the call, the CBs are told to play with inside leverage ( don't get beat inside ) and Vontea did a great job of that and of squeezing the WR to the sideline. So while he got beat, I am not sure if it was a bad play on his behalf. It was pretty good coverage, I thought. It was just a great throw and catch. But that is all conjecture on my part :pointlol:

The problem is he didn't, Vontae was right in his hip pocket on that play, if he just turns his head, his knockes it down or picks it....something they did alot of last year, if these kids dont get their heads around, they don't make plays.....I am leaning on the coaches to right this...

The WR made a one handed over the shoulder catch, pretty damn tough play to make. Vontea maybe, and I stress maybe, could have knocked it down. No way he picks it.

If you want to grill Vontea on the play that's your right. I just disagree.

    Pretty much

yes I dont care about the score or who wins, in preseason I want to see fundamentals, like when Vontae stepped up and made that beautiful tackle on the RB trying to gain the edge...

Well Killah, we have not had this good of a roster since the late JJ/early Wanny era, Rebuilding is completed, just added a legit #1 Wr and Dansby.

Small wonder for the confusion, we're not used to being good.

I hear ya Pads, but remeber this, Miami hasnt won jack, they were sub-500, and missed the playoffs last year, regardless of what they did in the offseason...I unlike alot of people arent putting them as a lock to make the playoffs this year, and that has been my prediction all along...

being good is all relative in our eyes, lets see it on the field...that being said Pads, you think White gets all the reps in Game 2, like Thigpen did in the 1st game..?

I'm not one to think we are a lock to make the playoffs FY, this is one tough schedule, with even the weaker teams, the Bears, Lions, Browns all have greatly improved over 09.

I do think we will be a good team, meaning we will be in every game with a chance to win it in the 4th qtr, we are on the cusp of already having games won in the 4th qtr, but until we prove we can do it, we remain loaded with "potential".

Bro, I honestly don't know, what I suspect is Sparano is finished with Pat White so the thinking may be "why bother playing him">?

They do not mind cutting high draft picks and tend to do so quickly rather than spend anymore time with them.

Now a player I have my eyes on is the Steeler's Stefan Logan, he is a elite returner, burned us in the last game in 09 with long returns, and would solve a host of problems, and he is on the roster bubble in Pittsburgh.

He would solve a host of issues and mean guys like RGM/Tristan Davis can be safely cut/waived/practice squaded as he handles Kick offs and punts and set a Steelers record for return yds in 09.

We haven't won anything yet. Being deep and having roster competitions in training camp doesn't win you football games or prove a damn thing really. I'm not one to sit and piss and moan over what I saw in the first preseason game, I'll let the whiners with over expectations do that but I'm not ready to call us good yet without even seeing them on the field in a real game. This is where the confusion comes with the fanbase. Some are ready to jump out in front of a moving bus over a game that don't count and some are already giving what ifs and talking playoffs. There is a big wide gap between those types and I fall somewhere in the middle. We have to be patient and find out instead of going off the deep end. Whichever end it might be.
