IMO the whole 'possession receiver' thing is over played. Denver has used an increasingly quicker (and shorter) pass scheme ever since Gibbs left and their OL ceased being a strength. That is the largest factor in Marshall's YPC numbers. That and the fact that he's so good at YAC that you want to get him the ball in higher percentage ways. But he is a guy that can take the top off the defense. He has enough speed and at his size he will tower over most every DB.

Classic DeSean Jackson type deep threats don't get the ball thrown to them 150 to 180 times a year.

You can't afford to be throwing deep that often. It's a low percentage play. And the defense is so scared of Brandon Marshall they know where he is at all times anyway. Some of those classic deep threats might still be lost a little bit in the secondary.

I don't like using the term "possession receiver" with Marshall. It implies things unnecessarily. The way I personally like to look at the position is, there are possession receivers and there are deep threat receivers and then there are true #1's. The true #1 is a complete player. Brandon Marshall is a #1.

This exactly. Heck, you want to get every receiver the ball in ways that ensures a high percentage of completions. But a guy with the sort of toughness and physical ability to get upfield even against heavy traffic demands the ball. That's why Marshall has so many catches, IMO.

Whether or not he's capable of getting behind the defense and whether or not he will are two different issues. I predict a lot of 5 yard passes that go for 15 yards in Marshall's hands, but the coverage on Marshall will probably be too intense for him to be a true deep threat.

Then again, Ted Ginn beat the entire Jets secondary on national television, so anything's possible.

I'm not sure when "possession receiver" became derogatory, but it shouldn't be. I'm guessing people use it as a euphemism for "big and slow," but I'm not sure why that's a bad thing. Larry Fitzgerald is big and slow, after all.

Would you do a lot of bubble screens with him, then?

Agree. Of course he's capable of running past most DBs. Is a matter of catching them by surprise.

You set up the big plays with smaller plays. Take what they give u, and once they change their strategy, hit'em with the big play.

That's why Ginn was never successful. And that's why he got them by surprise only once(against the Jets....must admit it was beautiful !!!!!)

I would, but not exclusively with him. If we can learn to block screens well then he could be used as a blocker or as a decoy as well. For me it would depend on how they are playing him. But bear in mind that I'm a bit biased. I think that a well blocked screen play, all kinds, is one of the prettiest plays in football. I feel that a perfectly executed running back screen (they develop a little slower) highlights so many of the aspects of football that I love. First of all, there's the strategy of when to call one. Then there's often a fake of some sort. The QB throws a nice touch pass that is caught perfectly in stride. My favorite part is watching the linemen pull and clear the way. (That was probably a result of growing up watching Larry Little do it). Finally you get to watch the runner reading his blocks and running in the open field. It's all beautiful.

The negative side to the day dream I just enjoyed is that we really haven't done a great job of blocking on screens the last two years.

Don't get too excited. He only mentioned it in passing. I don't think he's referring to efficiency in the same sort of context and underlying meaning that we do.
