Have to say, found this article in MSN a little surprising. Most of those players were obvious choices for overpaid. They list Carey at #4. While Carey probably makes more money than he deserves, he still deserves to be paid as one of the top 2 or 3 RTs in the game. http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/lists/...ayers-2010?GT1=39002#sport=NFL&photo=11252749
The reason why he's overrated imo is because he doesn't take care of his body like he should for being paid like that, and ive seen that nonsense weight get in the way of him doing his job on different occasions..
Not sure he belongs at 4 but he is overpaid for a RT. He was probably graded this way because of position alone and not performance. One thing I am sure of is that if Big Vern could control his weight and stay away from the buffet table he would be an elite player.
Vernon Carey got 15 million? Hell yes he deserves to be on there. I think each individual OL position is, on its own, a bit overrated anyway. As a unit, very very important. As an individual position? Overrated.
You realize $15M wasn't his salary last year, right? It is only that high because he signed a big new contract that offseason.
Carey and Long are bookends and anchor what I believe is one of the very best OL's in the league. If they play big this season and Carey performs, weight or not, then give him every penny. The Triumvirate know games are won or lost in the trenches, and Carey is a big part of why our trenches will win games for us IMVHO. His cap hit didn't stop us from giving big money to Marshall or Dansby, so Carey being overpaid is a subjective opinion, in my opinion
and Carey is worth every penny of his contract we have the best set of BookEnds in the league should not be forgotten, he is the hier apparent to LT should Long go down, during the season
Almost every player who signs a contract once they become a free agent is overpaid. That's just the way it works. We overpaid for Dansby too but as long as your finances are in order you can handle overpaying on occasion.
23d, i'm not so sure about Carey moving to LT should something happen to Long .... he is best suited right where he is, and he would get abused by speed rushers on the L side. of course everything depends upon Gardner and Murtha ... we will know where we stand in a couple weeks. is he overpaid, surely .... but he can afford to be a lazy RT -- and still put up very respectable stats, which he does ...
Carey already spent a season at LT and perfermed decently as such. Premium LT's are getting $30 million plus to sign so $15 million for a top 5 RT is right in line. Especially when injury prone centers get $14 million to sign.
Friend PHINANALYST: not to worry or be unsure, Carey moves to LT if Long goes down he is a top tier NFL OT, our elite other end of the Orca BookEnds the Orca-5 are the 21st Century version of the 20th Century RedSkins offensive line: the Hogs
because I believe he could perform at a higher level if he took the necessary steps....anyone who doesn't, is underachieving relative to their talent, and, is cheating their employer.
I'm sorry, but when an O-lineman was able to be a starter for a team despite three regime changes and being part of the most putrid O-lines in 'Phins history (especially the unit charged with protecting Culpepper, and failing), than he deserves every penny.
Outside of signing bonuses & guaranteed money, no player in the NFL is overpaid. Each year, every player has to prove their worth to keep their contract. The top 10 overpaid list should have been the top 10 signing bonus or guaranteed money mistakes by team front offices.
For all of you that didn't know this. Vernon Carey was not arrested in the off season. He deserves a raise if you ask me! The boy does his job, stays out of trouble, and is pretty much invisible. Isn't that what you want to see in your ROT? He does what's asked of him and is consistent at his profession, the coaches like him,and he is our rock on the right side. I don't care what the haters say.It is what it is.
I've never seen a guy do good at his job and get so much crap from the media and many others. He's a good player. Last year he struggled a little because of injuries. IMO he's a quality blocker.
And all this while readapting to an old position and the fact that defenses really tried to move pass rushers away from Jake Long when possible. Cant blame them for that. Carey gave up a handful of sacks and 20 pressures. Thats a lot of pressures but some of those came in games where we were playing come back.
Carey's contract, since they didn't to too much in the way of research, was signed when he was a left tackle, not a right tackle. He can play both spots very well, something that had to go into his contract negotiations.... Soooooo....the reason he is 'overpaid' for his position is that he is being paid as LT, not a RT... That said, I'd have to agree that IF he took his conditioning a bit more professionally, he would be in the elite range of OL, and I think his best position is at RT.
Ok, he can perform better, but he isn't overrated. We see him as a great RT, and that's how he is performing. He's one of the best RTs in the game.
he is one of the better RTs in the game ... and yes, he could be better if he took it seriously ... BUT, for anyone that thinks he could be an elite LT -- he has already proven he is not, hence the move to RT. it was a little bit of a reach -- and a pick of necessity at the time ... but he was a 1st rd pick. He is and was expected to be good, and he is at RT .... Vernon got his doses of 'haterade' the 1st 2-3 years based off of his draft position and performance at LT. He has settled in nicely at RT, is pretty solid, 'could' be even better with some serious conditioning ... and is very susceptable to speed rushers, which was his problem at LT.
When did he even get to play LT in the 1st 3 years? He only did it one year, and that was 2007. He did a heck of a job then, especially with how garbage the rest of the line was by comparison.
Except that his 1 year at LT he played better then his last 2 at RT. Less sacks/hits/pressures overall I do believe. The guy would still be playing LT if it weren't for a little #1 overall stud LT named Jake Long. The team should have honestly stuck him at LT right from the beginning, but there was that botched Damion McIntosh large contract for damaged goods. The guy takes a lot of flak but he's a beast in the run game and he's usually near invisible at RT except the latter part of this year when he was battling injuries. Miami has what you call "bookend tackles". If anyone wants to complain about our OL it should start with our injury prone $14 million center and the fact we had to keep extra players in to cover our guards poor pass protection.
the offensive line is what we ride to the SuperBowl 1) they open running lanes to establish the run 2) which in turns opens the passing game 3) which allows you to wear down their defense 4) allowing our defense to dominate the 2nd half it all begins in the trenches. the offensive line sets the pace & attitude of a game vernon carey is a good thing & excellent investment
I dont think he's overpaid. But I do think every rookie that gets drafted is overpaid. Give the guys who made it in this league on hard work, the money. NO MORE JAMARCUS RUSSELLS'!!!!!
