Sign and trades help because you end up trading cap space for the player and retain bird rights for players that would have to be renounced. Thus you get to keep them.

(Bird rights: players that have 3 years or more of service with one team..can be retained and not count against the hard part of the cap.)

1st round picks count in an escalated rate...exactly like the NFL does it. Second round picks DO NOT count against the cap.

ok, so wait. the original team can offer their free agent more money than any other team and then trade that contract?

also the heat sort of have to give away their picks right?

Right on every count in this post.

    The beauty is this.....

when you have a rich owner such as Mickey Arison (heat owner) you can buy...YES...BUY a 1st round pick from somebody for 3 million dollars.

    so basically...the heat traded money.

But it is necessary. you never want to burn bridges. You just stole their franchise player. offer compensation.

so for bosh, the heat made up the difference between what they could have signed bosh for vs. what he signed with the raptors for?

or did they not have to do that?

or are they allowed to go over because they can project that they wont exceed the number?

idk, i still dont quite get it

Just said this somewhere else; Riley could have bent the Cavs and Raps over, no lubricant...but instead he got them to take something for their players.

This way, everybody wins at least a little.

The actual process is actually like this. The Raptors wrote Bosh's contract and gave him his bird rights deal and the full 6 years.

The Heat then purchased Bosh's contract...and compensation was the picks package.

The Heat did not come out unscathed. They gave back the Toronto pick that Riley boned them for 2 years ago. That pick had a real chance at becoming a lotto pick in 2014.

72-10 is the gold standard. (Bulls)

I am thinking that a championship in year one is too important..and rest might compromise the all-time record.

But in year two...kiss that record good bye.

ahhh. i see. so essentially, the heat became the raptors with respect to bosh. its as if bosh was always a heat.

and there is no day of reckoning for type of thing? or does that number over the max always be exempted

the picks wouldnt bother me tbh. you dont really need that player or want his contract

seems like an interesting process that helps teams and ensure that player salaries always increase. but there are too many guys that are overpaid

Yet...the funny thing is that the best three free agents this offseason were the three that the heat signed.

yet Atlanta paid Joe Johnson almost 25 million more than each of them.

BTW..heard the term .."bad contract"? the bobcats just did that...40 for 5 for Tyrus Thomas is ridiculous. Haslem is better and he will get less than HALF of what Thomas got. But Thomas is athletic and younger.

I'm happy the Cavs got something at least potentially useful. I was concerned they'd take a bad contract in any S&T they did.

I disagree with him on several points, especially his contention that the Triple Crown don't know what they're doing by signing up to play together. He also made no mention of how announcing a departure on TV in prime time is a 180 from the way Art Modell left Cleveland and was likely done in recognition of how Modell is hated.

Basically, he needs to stick to speculating about football.

I thought Florio was his usual self, lots of complaining, not much substance. I think the super friends have a very good idea about how the grind of a 82 game season works and they are more than capable of understanding what parts of their olympic experience will translate and which parts won't. I certainly think that they have a better understanding of that than Florio does.

And I think that Lebron's decision to hold that 1-hour show was intended to be the opposite of Modell. He wanted to be the guy that told the city he was leaving rather than be the guy who left in the middle of the night. Reality is that no matter what he did Lebron was going to be criticized. I fully believe that if Lebron had stayed in Cleveland, Florio would have put out a similar piece complaining about how once again an athlete proves it's all about the money and how Lebron took the easy choice, like some kid who's not man enough to leave the safety of his hometown, yadda yadda.

Lebron James is the best player in basketball. period.

    BUT

    Wade has a special trait.

Yesterday..at the intro...did you notice him role his eyes when he said "yeah..we are team hollywood...whatever you want to call us".

That was a clear reference to Joakim Noah making his comments yesterday.

Dwyane Wade will now think of those comments...from now till he plays vs. the Bulls. Wade is a killer. lebron is just uber talented.

I think it was James who made a good point when he said that Noah wouldn't have said that if they had signed with Chicago, then said that he liked Hollywood.

That event was the foundation of the new Evil Empire. This is going to be a great ride, guys.
