Plus HTC just released the Kernel code for the EVOs 2.1, which should help out the mods for it. Even the 2.2 ROMs that are all ready out. (Hurray for flash!) Which, for me, is the beauty of Android, and why I probably will never own an iphone. I am personally waiting for the Dell Streak to come to T-mobile, I have my fingers crossed that it will be this month, like it is for AT&T. I think the Streak will be able to run Gingerbread. I'm not sure about that, it does meet all of the requirements that have been released so far though.

Get advanced Task Killer. It'll take care of battery life. My Hero can last a couple days without a charge if I'm not watching YouTube vidoes the whole time.

I've been texting and talking most of the day, and I'm at 91% battery life.

Still waiting on the white girl, but I have a feeling that when I see it in person I'm going to prefer the black.

Had the black first gen and 3G (obviously) but the white 3GS. I don't know why, but the pictures and videos of the white 4G look off white for some reason.

i have a 3GS and had the first iphone before that. been waiting for the incredible to be coming off this several-month long backorder for awhile now. a buddy & i traded phones for a day and i much prefer the incredible, and i was an apple fanboy. if you take the rose-coloreds off, it really is a better phone.

how is AT&T's coverage down there? up here it's pretty crappy, very over-stressed network. hard to get 3G most of the time.

edit: crap, don't know how to do youtube tags here. oh well

    answer my network question!

most of my problems are with the carrier though, not the phone - hence my network questions. i wasn't happy with AT&T requiring my pricing plan to go up in price when i upgraded from old iPhone to 3GS.... especially given you can't get 3G more than 85% of the time up here. my bill is something like $15-20 more a month than it used to be simple because this phone is a 3GS model. numerous calls to AT&T about connection problems don't yield much. Wish there was a way that you could not pay for it if you don't get it.... or at the very least opt to go back to edge-only in billing if you can't get 3G.

I have had no issues with AT&T thus far. My internet speeds arent what I used to get on Sprint... But I think sprint has way less customers also, so I guess that's expected.
the 3Gs' are still selling for a lot of money on ebay. A ridiculous amount actually

The emerging consensus on the Death Grip is that if you live in an area with good reception you'll never notice it, and if you live in an area with poor reception, you'll lose signal thanks to the grip. It'll be interesting to see what happens after iOS 4.0.1 comes out. It's going to change the formula used to represent signal strength in bars, so in all likelihood people are probably going to lose 1 or even 2 bars, but shouldn't have an issue with the Death Grip any longer.

    Anyway.

Google has launched a new version of YouTube Mobile. It's basically a cleaned up, simple version of the desktop YouTube site that you can access in Mobile Safari rather than dealing with the native YouTube app.

    Congrats, mor.

As for Consumer Reports, I think they're largely unreliable, since they allow minor flaws in products to turn them off entirely. When I was looking for information on new cars, their reviews largely went along the lines of "Attractive, clean styling; affordable; good power and fuel economy; comfortable interior; but the side view mirrors are pretty ugly, so this car is terrible."

But that's not good PR either way.

as for the reception thing... I try to make it happen (I even covered all metallic part with my hands) to no avail. I couldn't replicate it. There's theories about it being more obvious in areas with worse AT&T coverage... I dunno. I'll make a video LOL

Couple things; you live in south FL, where ATT/Cingular used to be Bellsouth, and BS had the most extensive and mature network in the area - one of the most extensive coverages in the US.

So, if you live, work and play in the urban areas, which are heavily covered, you'll be fine. That's the case for my brother who lives in Miami.

I tend to think that the reception issue will be more prevalent in areas with marginal-to-poor coverage, where the phone's weakness will dovetail with the poor reception to be a real problem.

    24 Hours with the iPhone4

So after owning it and using it like mad for a 24 hour period, here are some things I'd like to voice (possibly to just Desides, me, and 2 other losers that's still reading this thread)....

    1. The screen really is the most beautiful thing on planet Earth. I've never ever ever seen a display so sharp in my life. If they can get this thing spanned across a 42" canvas, I swear I don't care what it would cost, I want one. You can read text even when zoomed ridiculously far out in Safari.

    2. South Florida might be immune to the reception issue. Just going off of what bloggers, tec people, and Nabo has said... South Florida might be immune to the issue. Whatever the issue is, i have tried to make it lose signal with no luck. I'm totally OK with that.

    3. The device seems SUPER fragile. I think I felt this way about the 3Gs when I got it as well, so maybe it passes. It just seems soooooo easy to break. I know they said it was sturdier stuff than the 3Gs, but still. I have the same clear case that Desides reviewed a page or so back, and it's awesome. My only complaint is that pocket dirt seems to always find it's way into the case (prompting you to remove it, clean it, and put it back on -- God forbid you iPhone is ugly).

    4. The battery is a major win over the 3Gs. I'm a pretty internet and game heavy user so the 3Gs battery did me no favors. After a day of Tapatalk and different games (including some heavy 3D ones), I still have well over 50% of my battery. I like.

    5. We got Lebron James *****es.

This is exactly right. Because the signal strength is being incorrectly represented by the bar count, you basically think you've got more signal than you really do. Then you apply the Death Grip, and there goes your signal from 5 bars to 1, even though you really only had the real equivalent of 3 bars to begin with.

A drop of 4 bars is ridiculous. However, a drop of 2 bars with the Death Grip is entirely reasonable considering you're preventing the antenna from working at full capacity just by touching it.

iOS 4.0.1 is out. It includes a revised formula for determining and displaying signal strength, and makes the bar graphics taller to make it easier to determine how many you have. iLounge has a more complete list of changes here.

In medium or low signal strength areas, you'll likely lose a bar or two from the display, but in actuality you still have the same signal strength as before. No word on whether or not this fixes the Death Grip, but I'd have to believe it does something for the problem.

Also, Apple will have a presentation tomorrow at 10 AM PST about the iPhone 4.

Lastly, there's a rumor floating around that Apple will use a "brute force" hardware fix for the antenna bridging that results in the Death Grip, and will come up with a more elegant solution for new models. If true, we'll probably hear about it tomorrow.

That's more or less exactly what it is. Remember, it was announced way back in the iOS 4.0 preview in January, but wasn't included in the iOS 4.0 public release to give developers a little more time to update their apps to use it.

Anandtech has a good multi-page article up detailing the changes to 4.0.1 with regards to signal strength, plus pretty pictures that show you the range of signal strength Apple is using to denote how many bars appear on the display.

They still think Apple should provide free Bumpers, since that's the most effective way of eliminating interference caused by the contact of our fleshly bag of salt water hands with the phone.

Engadget, Gizmodo, AppleInsider, and MacRumors are all better than the stinking SFGate for this.

Jobs just announced free cases--not just Bumpers, but sourced cases--for everyone iPhone purchase through September 30. I'll be applying for mine. Might as well.
