I think Manny will play in the series, probably at DH all 3 games, though I could see him sitting out one game.

And I really have no clue if he gets cheered or booed, I'm going to the game on Saturday and will cheer him in his first at bat. I bet it's a mixed reaction though, half of the people booing, half of the people cheering with a bunch of drunk bandwagon fans asking who Manny Ramirez is.

Dodgers manager Joe Torre said that Manny Ramirez will likely be the designated hitter for the upcoming interleague series against the Red Sox and Angels.

"That's my plan going in," Torre said. "I really haven't talked to him about it. I sort of threw it out there to him last night. I think it's probably the best thing just to keep him in the lineup for three games." We're not surprised, but it's a bit of a buzzkill for those who hoped to see him in front of the Green Monster again. Torre didn't dismiss the idea of playing him in the outfield for one game on the road trip in order to keep him fresh.

Great play continues, Sox just 2 games out now with Rays and Yankee losses tonight. The Sox would be leading any other division in baseball right now, and they are coming on strong in the East.

2 games back from where this team was in April is amazing. Still not sure they're better than the Yankees or Rays but that's why you play the games.

I am concerned with Lackey though, he's walking a lot of guys and is very hittable so far this year. I wonder if something is wrong with him.

Felix Doubront is taking Boof Bonsor's spot on the roster. Boof is being DFA since he's out of options. I wonder if a team will claim him since he had trouble staying healthy this year and when he pitched he didn't pitch that great. Anyway I'm excited to see Doubront pitch. I saw him once last year at a Double A game and thought he had pretty good stuff. He has a low 90s FB with a lot of sinking action and a change up and curveball that still need some work. Could be a #3 starter. If he shows he can get people out, especially LHH, he might have a big role with this team in August and September. Good luck to him.

I just got home from Coor's Field. Ubaldo was filthy the first four innings. Rockies announcers said he had the flu. The ball Giambino hit still hasn't come down. Papelbon is losing it.

There are strong rumors going around that Mike Lowell will be traded or most likely DFA today to clear a spot for Matsuzaka, since J.D. Drew isn't ready to play and the Sox like Reddick's defense and arm in RF. The Sox are also rumored to be close to signing Adam Everett as a back up defensive SS. The guy couldn't hit water if he fell off a boat but has a great glove and with Jed Lowrie MIA and probably not going to do much of anything this year the Sox do need a true back up middle infielder. Of course Everett was originally drafted by the Sox and then traded for Carl Everett (no relation between the two though).

Well Lowell won't be traded or released for the next 15 days as he's being put on the DL with a bad hip, aka Lowell is being a good teammate with this probable fake injury.

Pedey was unbelievable last night. When he gets hot, he doesn't miss anything at the plate -- he's so good.

Papelbon needs to get his **** together. Outside of Bard, the bullpen is in shambles.

Papelbon's stuff was painfully flat and left up in the zone the past two days. I'm worried about tonight since both Papelbon and Bard (who is turning into Scott Proctor before our very eyes in terms of work load as the guy pitches almost every night) will both have the night off due to pitch 2 days in a row. Can you imagine which joker in the pen will be handed the ball in the 9th if the Sox have a 1 or 2 run lead?

Atichson actually has been pitching pretty well lately but I don't trust him very much. I'm sure Theo and Co. are working the phone lines trying to get another RP but so are the rest of the teams in the league. I have a strange feeling that both Doubront and Michael Bowden are going to play big roles in the pen in the 2nd half of the season.

ehhh really?? I disagree Paps deserves and should be the closer..he has earned it....now unless he has an injury or something we dont know about..

although u probably cant go wrong with Bard either, might as well get him used to it, cuz Pap is walking after this year...

Not sure if you read the article but it states that Papelbon should be the closer, which I agree with, giving examples based on their numbers (note: the article is not for stat geek haters out there). Papelbon is also under contract until after the 2011 season so unless he gets traded (which I don't think will happen) he'll be with the team.

Brutal loss last night, not only did the Sox have a 3-0 lead but they loaded the bases I believe 4 times and couldn't score.

Hopefully Pedroia is only out for a few days, if he has to go on the DL the team is in trouble both defensively and offensively, as I can't see Bill Hall playing 2B full time and they don't have anyone in the minors to step in and play. Plus how can you replace a guy like Pedroia.

And now Buchholz hurts his knee running the bases, awesome! The National League and their rules are crap.

The Sox should put Jon Lester in a bubble and ship him the hell out of San Francisco right now.

What a terrible road trip so far.

I'm glad the Sox are getting the hell out of San Francisco. Another day, another injury with Victor Martinez breaking his thumb on a foul tip. Ugh. They're saying that he won't have to go on the DL and can play through it but it's still not good news. We're starting to turn into the 2009 Mets only we're actually good and still winning games.

I'm very nervous with Tampa Bay coming in having to face Lackey, Matsuzaka and Wakefield. It could be a disaster.

I know this isn't Sox related, but watching the highlights of Zumaya's injury last night was pretty disturbing. According to the Tigers' official twitter feed:

I wish him nothing but the best and hope for a speedy recovery. I can't ever recall seeing a pitcher in such pain on the mound.

Onto the Sox -- I'm looking forward to this shortened series with Tampa. I feel like this team needs to take 3 of the next 5 against the Rays prior to the All-Star break to give them some cushion in the divisional standings. Lackey needs to pick this team up tonight, especially considering the Daisuke-Garza matchup on tap for tomorrow night.

Tampa seems to be falling apart from within these past few weeks -- topped off by the Longoria-Upton spat in the dugout on Sunday. Here's hoping the Sox can speed up their descent into the abyss over the next week.

Also, someone needs to fill me in regarding the fascination with Beltre and why he appears to get pissed off whenever someone touches his head in the dugout?

The Zumaya thing was pretty gross to see, I've always been a bit of a Zumaya fan so I'm hoping he'll be able to bounce back from this but I doubt he'll ever throw 98+ again. I remember seeing Saunders (I forget his first name right now) from TB break his arm twice pitching on the mound and also I believe I remember seeing Frank Viola break his arm while with the Red Sox back in the day too. As for a pitcher feeling more pain on the mound I think Bryce Flore face crusher might trump even the Zumaya injury.

But I think we can all agree that the pitcher that felt the most pain in a bullpen has to be Tom Gordon while throwing up before he had to go into Game 5 of the 2004 ALCS against the Red Sox.

I agree the Sox need to put the pressure on TB, it seems like this is almost a repeat of last year with them as they started out playing well and then just went on a big losing streak and just kept fading and fading. You're right the Sox need to take 3 out of 5 against them, which is going to be difficult without Pedroia or Martinez. They can't let them get confidence back.

Regarding the Adrian Beltre thing, I guess he just doesn't like being touched on his head, I believe it has to do with some kind of Religion (I think it might be Buddha or Hindu) where the head is special and shouldn't be touched, I don't remember the whole story but I think he read it in a book or something. Victor Martinez touched his head once and Beltre kind of flipped on him and Victor had no idea why he was freaking out. Of course once he learned about it he now keeps doing it to screw with Beltre. I really don't think Beltre is legit mad about it anymore since the past couple of times Martinez has slapped his head, Beltre throws an air punch and then they both start laughing.

You know it's too bad that Jed Lowrie is still recovering from mono because this would have been a perfect opportunity for him to play some 2B for a few weeks before Pedroia comes back.

It is also disappointing that Josh Reddick has struggled so much this year as he's also missing a huge opportunity to show the Sox he could be an everyday OFer. It looks like he's going to be another Brandon Moss but with better defensive and speed.

Big big win tonight against a slumping Tampa Bay team. The Sox need to go for the kill tomorrow and not fool around. It's hard to imagine that this team is 1 game out of first place with all the injuries, hopefully we can continue to play good baseball until all the regulars get healthy enough.

The bullpen concerns me, Okajima has seemingly lost everything and has been terrible this year. And Delcarmen is coming back down to earth now. I still think Bowden and Doubront are going to play big roles in the pen this year.

Oh great another day, another 2 injuries. Manny Delcarmen goes on the DL with a bad forearm and Jason Varitek has a broken foot and is out 4 to 6 weeks. The Sox made a trade to reacquire Kevin Cash who was with Houston's Triple A team. This is getting a little unreal with all of the injuries but it is part of the game. Hopefully the team can continue to play well and stay close to NY and Tampa until they get their guys back.

These injuries have been unbelievable -- its starting to feel like 2006 all over again.

The Delcarmen injury certainly doesn't hurt too badly. He's been worse than a replacement level player up to this point.

Losing Tek, though, is a brutal blow (who'd have thunk we'd be saying that prior to the season) to the catching depth. We can't afford to have Victor experience any setbacks during this stint because Kevin Cash as an everyday starter is certainly not the answer. How freakin' ironic is it that both of our Triple-A catchers are hurt as well?

Hopefully they can just keep the Yankees and Rays at an arms length distance in the standings and ride out this incredible streak of bad breaks (literally).

Yeah it does feel like a mix of the 2006 season and the 2009 Met season last year. Hopefully the team (pitchers especially) keep playing well and keep us within 3 or 4 games by the time everyone comes back healthy. It will be a completely different team by August assuming everyone comes back and plays to their potential.

Delcarmen's injury does kind of hurt. He actually was pitching well this year until his forearm started to bother him. I still would never trust the guy in a big spot but a healthy Manny Delcarmen is better than Robert Manuel/Fabio Castros of the world. Hopefully it's nothing too serious and he'll be fine in 15 days.

The catching situation is a joke. Between Martinez and Varitek getting hurt at the MLB level and Dusty Brown and Mark Wagner hurt in Triple A, it's almost laughable. Although to be fair I'm not sure how big of an upgrade Brown or Wagner would be over Cash and Molina hitting wise, defensively Wagner is suppose to be very good. The team does have some catching depth however those guys aren't even close to being ready at the Double and Single A levels. Hopefully Kevin Cash and the non-Molina brother play good defense and throw people out. The bottom of the line up with Cash/Molina and Hall/Patterson is a black hole.

Hopefully the injury bug stops now or we might not even have enough room on the 40 man roster to promote players.

Youkilis left the game tonight with pain in his ankle, just wonderful. If Lester gets hurt I'm giving up watching baseball for the rest of the year. Hopefully it's nothing serious but him leaving the game definitely changed the game tonight in a big way, so hopefully he's back sooner than later.

The Sox are putting Michael Bowden in the pen in Triple A and should recall him as soon as he makes a few appearances out of the pen. He can't be any worse than anyone not named Papelbon or Bard.

The Sox need to win this game tomorrow, they can't fall too far behind since I can't see them gaining 10.5 games in a month again.

Well it wouldn't be a fitting end to the 1st half without another Red Sox getting hurt, this time it was Beltre and his hammy. Hopefully he'll be ok and the 3 days off will do him some good, assuming he doesn't play in the ASG.

Beckett pitched yesterday in Triple A, threw the ball really well according to reports. It will be nice to finally get him back for the 2nd half run.

5 back at the AS break actually is pretty impressive with the injuries.

So whats the inside scoop on the Elsbury he-said-team-said drama....they setting up a trade to rid themselves of him? this Tit-for-tat is uglier than all the injuries.

I'm actually looking at it as a 2 team race for the WC with Tampa. I think the Yankees will win the AL East title easily.

As for the Ellsbury thing, it's a little strange. Ellsbury is claiming the Sox medical staff didn't do a good job reading the results of his broken ribs and is blaming them while the baseball ops/team is questioning him a bit and growing frustrated by the time its taking him to get back healthy and the typical Boston media is calling Ellsbury soft and just trying to spin things to sell papers. The players are a little annoyed that he hasn't really been with the team the whole year as he's been in Arizona working out and rehabbing. Who's right or wrong, I have no idea. I know rib injuries are tricky and the only thing that can heal them is time and rest. Ellsbury apparently has a little rep for being a little 'soft' in the past so of course people will question him. I just want him back on the field.

As for trading him (which was talked about all weekend on the radio) I think it's a little premature. Ellsbury is a good player and the Sox could definitely use him. With that being said I don't think anyone is untouchable and if the right deal comes along (like the last winter's rumored Ellsbury + prospects for Adrian Gonzalez deal which fans flipped out on and say no way they want to trade Ellsbury) he could be dealt. But I don't think the Red Sox will be looking to shop him because of this incident.
