I just read an article from the Bleacher Report. The writer had an opinion that, Pennington is wasting his time mentoring Henne as a quarterback. The writer didn't have a problem with Pennington mentoring Henne. His problem was that he looked at the quarterbacks on the roster and said that we are set there so why is he there at QB? Chad Pennington believes that he could still play and I think that he would want to play but right now he believes that mentoring Henne is good for his future. Now the writer was saying that he should have the front office end his contract as a player and sign him as a QB coach.

So what do you think? Do you think he will be our next QB coach or like the writer, in his opinion, thinks that Pennington is just "wasting his time?"

I personally think he is not wasting his time. I consider it an investment into Chad Henne's life and career.

    Thoughts??

This seems to be a common thought on these boards: Pennington being a coach. He no doubt has the capabilities to be a coach, but it all comes down to what he wants. I remember him a year back saying he wanted to stop moving around and be there for his kids more, so maybe he will take some time off from football for a little.

Either way, I fully believe he will try and play for at least a couple more years because he is such a competitor.

Well, Bro, the simple truth is Penny makes 6x as much as a Qb than as a Qb Coach, players always make more than staff and it is not even close.

And to me, Penny can help all three Qb's, the less polished the Qb is now, the more he can help them with professionalism, as Penny said:

"The Coaches handle the X's and O's, I can help with the ingame things like making sure everyone is lined up properly".

And a host of other things, like how to read a DE..

Penny has plenty of time to coach, if that's what he decides to do, after he retires. He wants to heal his shoulder this year, then go to another team next year, where he can be a starting QB again. That's what he's been saying since the day the Phins re-signed him.

I'm not going to say Penny is "wasting his time." And, I see Pad's point re; compensation. But, what I will say is what I have been saying ever since Penny was resigned...I just don't this team carrying 4 QB's into the regular season. Something's gotta give. One of Thiggy, Penny or White is not going to be a QB for the Miami Dolphins come September. Question is...who?

    JMHO...

    1. I am very happy to have Penny here mentoring Henne and Thigpen, White too I guess.
    2. If earning over a million+$$/this season, playing or mentoring is wasting time, someone please explain that to me. I want to waste my time too and earn what he will this year.
    3. Penny may indeed move on next year, but then again he may just decide he likes it here and retire or keep on earning over a million$/year as a backup for us, not bad work if you can get it.
    4. My only question is if Penny is healthy enough and ready to play, will he be our #3 in case we need him? and if so, then who do we get rid of? Do we rather stash Penny on PUP until the situation comes up we need him (God forbid) so we can keep White and Thiggy? If so, then do they allow Penny on the sidelines during games when they would not last season?

QB may be one of the most intriguing positions to watch what we do this Summer into September.

Penny is a very good backup by NFL standards and it is great having him on your roster to mentor Henne. He is pretty much a player/coach currently.

I'm sure that when he hangs 'em up, he'll make a great QB coach.

That is the point I was making. Like I said earlier, I think it is an investment into Chad Henne's life and career. I don't believe it is a waste of time. The writer at the Bleacher Report has a belief in that. I am supporting Pennington in whatever he decides to do...now and after he retires.

    Thanks for posting...

I completely agree with you on all of that. He is a value to us as a player/coach than just a coach in my opinion.

My take on Penny is he will be on the PUP for the 6 week period, I don't expect him to play in the preseason as that removes his eligibility, he cannot participate in full practices either.

The PUP allows him to fill his mentoring/coach role, if Henne falls apart early in the season Penny also makes instant depth with 10 games to go in the season.

This is good to think about. Perhaps he isn't aware that he is developing his coaching skills and refining his QB skills at the same time while teaching Henne.

Well forget his 65 THP in madden and throw in that 90+ accuracy.

I want him to be our QB coach for years and have the henne-penne tandem.

I think hes the best backup QB in the NFL and we also had the best 3rd string QB in the NFL in thigpen.

Who would of thought that after a year or two? After all our QB troubles... of course this all relies on Henne actually panning out and having a good year/career.

Even Pat White may be the best 4th string QB lol. Give him more than 5 pass attempts in 16 games and maybe he will complete one.

I doubt the man has a hard time figuring anything out. Remember he was a Rhodes Scholar candidate. They don't consider just anyone for a Rhodes Scholarship. Penny may be the smartest QB the Dolphins have ever had, its just his physical skills lack what he wants to do.

This is a great point. I don't think Henne will fall apart at the get-go because he can't handle being the man, it's that we have a pretty tough first 6 games to get thru. Penny would definitely be able to help him along with the opponents we face thru that time.

The Dolphins had no problem cutting aging veterans that didn't fit their plans (Taylor/Porter), nor cutting big money free agent mistakes (Wilson), or giving long term deals to very talented, though injury prone players (Ronnie).

They brought back Pennington because they believed he had value for the money, and it was a quick decision.

That's all we need to know.

Very true. I think he is the smartest QB we had. The viewpoint I was looking at was just Pennington improving what he has already. You know, making it better that's all.

I love LOVE if Chad was the QB coach, take away the guys arm for a second, he is the perfect QB......smart, good time managment, accurate, competitive, can read defense...he is consumate professional and would be a dynamic score if Miami where to get him as coach.....

I said it a while back that he should retire and be our coach...
