As the agent for Michigan tackle Jake Long continues to negotiate with the Miami Dolphins regarding the possibility of working out a contract before the time comes for the Dolphins to make their pick, there’s a report that Jake isn’t all that juiced about playing for the Fins. John Czarnecki of FOXSports.com reports that “[t]he word on the street” is that Long doesn’t want to play in Miami. But talks are continuing between the team and Long’s agent because of the “special honor” of being the No. 1 overall pick in the draft. (Yeah, those Steve Emtman rookie cards are going for about 100 . . . yen.) Czarnecki says that, if/when the talks with Jake Long break down, the Fins won’t move on to defensive end Chris Long. The Virginia product, the son of Hall of Famer Howie Long, has been presumed for several months to have the inside track because he’s the safest pick on the board. The Fins apparently then would look after Jake Long to defensive end/linebacker Vernon Gholston. With talk of Gholston slipping in the eyes of other teams, he’d be very wise to take the best deal he can get, if/when he gets an opportunity to negotiate with the Fins. http://www.profootballtalk.com/2008/04/15/jake-doesnt-want-to-be-a-dolphin/
The word on the street is that Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long doesn't want to play for the Dolphins, who continue to negotiate with him as the first overall draft choice. There's a special honor in being the first pick so Long's agents continue to talk. Of course, there is a deadline to these contract talks and then the Dolphins will move onto the next person on their board. Apparently, it isn't Virginia's Chris Long. What is unusual about the top of the draft is that no team has declared to be after Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan. I think the best player is Arkansas running back Darren McFadden because not only is he a tough inside runner, but he also has game-breaking receiving skills. It is an unusual combination for an every-down runner. McFadden has the potential to be more dynamic than Adrian Peterson, Minnesota's rookie of the year. LSU defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey figures to be selected in the top three, but there are many teams in the bottom two-thirds of the draft that have serious medical concerns about the stress fracture in his right leg. Some teams believe he will need surgery within two years on that leg. But the teams that love Dorsey seem not to care about this medical red flag. http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/8036808/The-pressure-is-on-for-Pacman
He was quoted as saying he would be honored to play for the Dolphins and be the #1 pick. But then again, face time is different than alone time.
I'm shocked he wouldn't want to play in Miami. Maybe if Cam was still in town, but with a new regime led by Parcells, players should be excited about coming here.
The key to the articles was this... "the word on the street is that Jake doesn't want to play in miami" The "word on the street" means about as much as me saying the dolphins were really the best team in the league last year. It has no significance until Jake comes out and says something along the lines of "We have broken contract discussions with Miami, I do not want to play there. I repeat... i do not want to play for Miami." Its just some stupid writers, trying to stir up some rumours, probably because they think these negotiations are going on too long or something ridiculous.
could be a way for the the J Long team to drive the price up... If an agent knows a team really wants a player, the agent is going to ask for a high contract, this could be the reverse.
great. forget the low ball offers and give the money to a quarterback, the only position that justifies the contract
This is the end for Ryan. You know theres 0 chance he'll take less money then either Long, Gholston or Dorsey.
you misunderstand. He will get a higher offer because he's a QB. Parcells and Ireland more than likely have a so called salary cap for each position. QB is the only one that justifies the money they will have to spend
I was waiting for that reply.... Hey Prez your the first person that came to mind when i found these story, there still a chance for Ryan your thinking right???
If Jake doesn't want to be here, than I would probably we leaning towards Ryan and just hoping he will turn out well.
Hey I saved my best Ryan arguments for the last stretch drive. Now that the Longs are being eliminated we're left with the low ball offer to Gholston and then a reasonable one to Ryan
You are the most loyal Matt Ryan fan I have ever met. You probably have like a big pillow with his face on it and a big Fathead of Matt Ryan. I can say, I am impressed that you are still saying he will be possibly the top pick by us despite the reports that hes out of contention and theres zero chance in hell he is taken.
Honestly, yes. Lol. I think its funny how he keeps talking about him despite no way in hell he is coming here.
Nah I am the most loyal Dolphin fan you have ever met Matt Ryan just happens to be the player that will help this franchise the most in the next ten years so that's why I'm convinced Parcells will take him. Its funny but everyone was screamign smokescreen earlier this year and now when that time of the year comes down where you see the serious smokescreens take place, everyone laps up the medias drippings. The fact that Ryan was left out was the surest sign that he's actually the choice. Start with the low ball offers elsewhere and then target your real choices. Whoever was thrown to the media first had no chance
actually they haven't mentioned dorsey or chris long in the negotiations either. So how are they out of the running?
I believe Dorsey is ruled out because he may not be able to be used to his full abilities in the 34. As for Long, same thing I am wondering lol.
Well if thats the reasoning then ryan is out because we can only have one qb on the field at the same time.
You do know that the yen, along with the Canadian dollar, is right now worth more than the US dollar, right?
