Damn you, Matt Ryan. Why can't you be just a little bit better? Why can't you be a shade closer to NFL-flawless? Why can't you be an undisputed franchise quarterback of Peyton-esque stature -- a consensus overall No. 1 pick to make all of the mock drafts curtsy and swoon? Here is the problem for Miami as the April 26 draft thunders in:

The Dolphins, who continue to clearly need the rescue of a great quarterback more than anything, keep picking really bad years to be really bad.

    good read

nice read. Isn't that just the truth though.. Here we sit with the #1 pick, and theres no one player really worthy of it, and of course, just our luck that we have the pick this year. We don't seem to be sold on any one player, nor is anyone else in the draft so nobody is willing to trade up, it is quite the frustrating thing to ponder. Just have to hope the FO does whats best for the team, with what theyve got to work with.

I think If we draft Jake Long, we'll be pleased with the choice for a long time. I understand what this threads about and I agree we are #1 in a draft that doesn't have a Peyton Manning or Reggie Bush, but I really like what Jake Long brings to the table.

That's why Ryan will drop past the Falcons. remember, the new GM of the Falcons was schooled by the Pats organization which believe you don't draft a QB early in round one unless you are possitive about him. They feel if you make a mistake on a QB early in round 1 it can set you back for 3 plus years.

Guys, the Giants won with Eli. He didn't start producing until later in the season last year and the jury is still out on him as to whether he is Paytonish.

I don't know if John Beck is the answer, but I do believe he is a lot better than what we saw from him in his four appearances last year. He's smart, dedicated and an unselfish leader.

I think his attributes will lend themselves well to the type offense Henning will be running this season. He's very accurate and makes quick and correct decisions.

The Giants, rendered Tom Brady incompetent in the superbowl, so there has to be more to it than just being a future HOF quarterback. We can and will win with a quarterback of lessor talents than the Manning brothers or Tom Brady.

Reflecting back to our superbowl winning teams, I often wonder just how HOF worthy Bob Griese would have been if he hadn't had such a dominate running attack and #1 defense backing him up.

With the exception of experience, I believe Beck has as many tools as Bob Griese had. Not many of you are old enough to remember this, but Griese was known as a "scrambler type" in 67-70, then our OL began to function as a unit and things settled down for him to be able to start picking defenses apart. Mostly, IMO, due to defenses having to concentrate on stopping a very powerful running game, Griese's intelligence, a very good offensive co-ordinator that sprinkled the pass at the most opportune time to receivers that ran excellent routes, plus a very accurate field goal kicker.

Kinda looks like a total team effort here doesn't it? Our dominance was in our running game and the ability of our defense to put the ball back in the hands of the offense to control the clock.

There's more than one way to skin a cat. If the coaching staff improves the OL just a little and RB, RW and LoBo take advantage of it. JB will prosper.

EDIT: I forgot to say, the game of football is based on war tactics and history has proven you cannot win a war strictly through Airpower. Infantry on the ground occupying the opponents territory and cities wins wars. In football talk, occupying the opponents end zone through domination on the ground still is the most assured way to win football games.

It's amazing how great a qb can look with a really good team around him...

Even an average qb can look great at times with time to throw the ball and a running game that demands respect from the d, so that play action is something to actaully worry about.

Always passing on franchise Quarterbacks can also set you back for years.

The problem is, no team can know whether they have passed on or drafted a "franchise" quarterback until after the quarterbacks have proven themselves to be franchise quality.

Considering the cost and guarantied money of the # 1 pick these days for a QB, it seems to be more a curse to pick at 1 with so many intangibles coming into play.

The NFL has to build some safeguards into this system, the guarantied money is just too astronomical to take the risk of picking a qb.

You're right. It's a risk. But with high risk comes high reward. And what do you get if you're not willing to take some risk drafting a QB in round 1? You get 11 different starting QBs since Marino retired and still no answer at quarterback.
