Maybe since Mangini was at the helm, it was a coverage scheme... with safety help at times, and other CBs also played a role in it..not just Revis, ... Fair to ask the question right? Maybe there were a few DB's playing him at the time...now looking at the play by play stats from ESPN, from that game in 2008 you had guys like T. Law, K Rhodes, D. Barrett, LB C. Spencer, as well as Revis were all noted as the defensive players on the plays to Marshall. Revis had also played some snaps against E. Royal... Now this past season, I believe Rex has put more trust in Revis, specially when he goes to blitz the house on the QB...
Ginn caught another on a square in with Revis covering one on one... Regardless, I think Marshall gets more than 35 yards on Revis. We'll probably try to get creative and get Marshall isolated on someone other than Revis if we can.
What? Ginn? The same guy whom you could breathe on and he'd crawl into the fetal position and/or run out of bounds?
You can make a case for Andre Johnson, but it's wishful thinking on your part to think Steve Smith, Terrell Owens, Chad OchoCinco and Randy Moss are still the same players they were 2-3 years ago.
I'd have to go with maybe. Revis is good enough to shut a high end receiver down. On the other hand Marshall is good enough to overcome even the best db. Too many variables to say absolutely yes or no till the game is done. However, as said, it doesn't really matter as Marshall is not the only weapon Miami will have on the field.
The first matchup comes week 3 on a Sunday Night in Miami. I'm hoping Sparano has plans to augment our approach this year, so that we enter the regular season at full stride, rather than spend another preseason merely evaluating who the starters will be, only to see those selections struggle throughout another September, while everyone tries to get on the same page. Shula routinely took advantage of such teams, and maximized the infernal September heat, to rack up early season victories, that often paid off huge in December. Old habits however are hard to break, and I won't be surprised to see our passing game still sputter on this balmy evening, with Revis getting the better of our lack of chemistry. Payback otoh arrives in December, when Marshall and Henne pound NY, with all cylinders firing.
Kinda reminds of the old joke that the only person that could keep Michael Jordan under 20 points was Dean Smith. There's just so much that goes into whether the stat is even relevant. Could be coaching, could be that we're running the ball really well so we don't need to throw, could be that Hartline/Bess are having tremendous games, etc. So much depends on how the game is going. If it comes down to a question of can Revis hold Marshall to under 35-yds when we have to pass, then I don't think he can do it. I have tremendous respect for Revis (he's definitely earned it), but Marshall is a beast. And if, for whatever reason, Marshall is called on to be a huge part of the offense, then holding him down for the whole game will be near impossible.
I'd say the only way this happens is if the Jests D harrasses Henne and we're behind. If our O-line is healthy this isn't happening and if you can't stop the run and Revis is covering him one-on-one a lot it will turn into a nightmare for Revis. Best you can hope for in that situation is Revis tackling well and keeping the YAC down to a minimal. The Beast is as good attacking the ball in the air as anyone including coming back for the catch. Blitz a LOT, that is your only chance at attaining this goal...
Heres the thing though, if revis holds marshall to less than 35 yards, what else is the offense doing? Does brian hartline or Devone Bess have a 100 yard game? Do we rack up 150 yards rushing? I think if one of those questions is answered yes and Marshall has less than 35 yards, then Marshall is doing what he's suppose to. He's helping to open up the rest of the offense.
Good point. What if Marshall has 34 yards with a td and he's run blocking Revis 5-8 yards every play? Just to many ways to look at it. I know when i played if a WR got the ball 4 times on a CB he won the battle. So it was the CB's job to keep it to 3 or under. That was the general consensus not to long ago. With that said the next shut down CB in the NFL could very well be Sean Smith he had a few games last year that he only gave up a few and some he didn't let his man get any.
Exactly. A 100+ yard game from Marshall (while nice) would more often than not indicate a lack of everything else on offense.
are we asking if BM will get more than 35 yards against the JESTS or against Revis in particular ... as i imagine us using lots of movement. BM is 'similar' to AJ, but no - not as good. Johnson is just a beast. Henne IMHO has a stronger arm than Schaub ... so that should work in his favor, even though he has less experience -- but will be better in the long run. Shutting down Ginn was not impressive, much like the TD pass was lucky IMHO ... it was a good call, and Revis just let him go. BM will go across the middle ... so getting 35 yeards should not be too difficult, regardless of who is covering him.
As long as the Dolphins win, I don't care if Marshall has 0 catches Herpe island may be a good player, but he still can be beat
I voted no for a couple of reasons. 1. 35 yards is pretty low against a guy that catches many short passes. I expect that Marshall will be targeted enough times that even if Revis played as great as last year that he'll catch at least 3 passes at his 12 yard average. 2. Historically, CBs don't have many seasons at the level of what Revis had last year. Every few years their is some player that is considered the best CB in the game. Usually it's based on one great year and few good years. It seems unlikely that Revis will ever duplicate last year although he still will be very good and probably considered the best CB for another couple of years. Finally, I don't think that it matters whether Marshall alone is shut down. His impact is more than just his numbers. He impacts the whole team.
I think the Pats were satisfied when Brady hit Welker up and down the field all game. And Revis was in coverage on Welker a few of those. Revis is the best CB in the league, but he has his moments just like everyone else.
We all know Revis is a damn good Cb, and he can put the clamps on many a good Wr but it's what happens away from him that counts if that happens. The Dolphins offense is set up to do more than just rely on Brandon Marshall. What having a player like Marshall does, and he is a top 5 Wr at the very least, is it opens up the rest of the offense. Miami is set up to be a strong running team and Marshall now takes away that 8th, or even 9th man in the box to stop the run. The offensive line is set up with a bunch of mauler/bring their lunch pale, kind of players and not having that saftey up in the box will be tough to stop a player like Ronnie, or Ricky. They also have a pretty decent complimentary Wr or two on the other side so my take would be go ahead and shut down Marshall if you can, but Revis will not be alone all the time in doing so. He will, for the most part, have over the top help on every play and that should be a very welcomed relief for every Dolphins fan. So bring that island on but don't forget that in football, there are other lslands to swim to...
I am willing to do a signature bet with someone that Revis will hold Marshall to at most 35 yards in the week 3 game.
Reasons: Orton New O system Bad running game interior OL couldn't hold up I love BM but, he does imo have a slight flaw is IF a CB can get in his head early he struggles. The infamous (Joey Porter peezy) last Miami game played in Denver I thought the jawing back and forth really effected his game. It will be interesting to see the matchup.
It might be safe to say in 2010 Marshall will have 0 yards on 0 catches and 0 touchdowns against Revis
I guess he played ridiculous last season for 5 games where he was held for less than 35 yards receiving. In 2007 he was held to less than 35 yards...once In 2008 he was held to less than 35 yards...twice In 2009 he was held to less than 35 yards...5 games Hopefully the trend doesn't increase for this season
Umm not to jump the gun PS17 but are we talking 2010 or 2011, it's not looking good Revis will even play in 2010. Good luck having Cromartie trying to stop Mashall. Maybe Rex can suit up for Nickle situations with the absence of personnel heading into pre season. Even if Revis is starting come week 3 under 60 maybe, under 35 not a chance.
Remember Miamiron, he was playing in a couple games where he was basically benched and didn't see the field after a couple plays, iirc. When him and Josh were getting into it.
Lets hope no one took that bet. Because based on the wording of that, if Revis doesn't play in game 3, you lose by default
I watched Revis take OCHO'S manhood away from him last year... literally I believe that, and #85 will not be the same.. He's the best in the game imo, and its not close.. Will he shut down Marshall, no, Marshall has the power and strength to fight for position that other's cannot....It will be a good battle the next few years, I see both winning a few.
I could see it happening.... I wouldn't say it would or wouldn't happen, but I could see it playing out either way. I think some of you guys are really downplaying just how good Revis is.
Marshall is too much of a beast not to get at least 35 yards in a competent offense. It's been said before, Revis won't be covering Marshall on every play. Cromartie will have to cover him on at least few snaps. When that happens, we should pass to marshall every time. Marshalls physical nature vs. Cromartie's....P**** nature, works out for Marshall every time they face each other. "Henne, just throw it to me. i don't care if it looks like Cromartie has position, he doesn't."
I just listened to an ESPN podcast where they had one of the producers from the NFL Match-up show (one of my favs). Anyway they were talking about Reggie Wayne and he mentioned that he could show you several plays on tape where Wayne just made Revis look silly (paraphrasing). The ball wasn't thrown for reasons having nothing to do with Revis, but he was beaten regardless. I really think that the idea that any CB can shut down a top 5 WR by himself is a fiction in today's NFL.
just because he was beaten on a few plays Raf certainly doesn't mean he's not the best in the game...How much does he get beat relative to others is the question.. This guy is the strongest corner out there, once he gets his hands on you your toast, and when he doesn't, his mimicking skills are 2nd to none imo. What are we really debating?...your telling me you would take another corner over him strait up?
