He simply could have asked if his mother participate in unsavory, illegal activities when he was younger, the impact this had on him, and leave it at that, suspecting that one of the "activities" was prostitution. Not need to ask directly if his mother was a prostitute.
You don't have to be a nice guy to be a good evaluator of talent. However you are never going to be a fan favorite if you are a jerk.
why does a gm have to be a fan favorite? also why is ireland a jerk for asking the question? they all do it to some point. he apologized for it. dez bryant is a crybaby if you ask me. he had his feelings hurt when the media made a big deal about him forgetting his shoes. he should just STFU and play football instead of stirring up more i got my feelings hurt drama.
really a nonissue the question may have been in bad taste but nothing more will happen from it. I wouldn't have asked it, but it is only news because the media made it so. Dez's mother isn't an innocent angel in all this, in fact it is her history that lead to the questoin . Realize that she had 3 children by 18 (dez was conceived when she was 12 or 15 depending on the source by statuatory rape father was about 40 at the time) and when dez was 8 she was convicted of being a drug dealer and jailed for her crimes. At various times, Dez lived with an aunt, his girlfriend's family and a friend. Dez also lived briefly with his father MacArthur Hatton, but the two have virtually no relationship today. And recently it appears that she told Dez that she is a lesbian. http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/spt/stories/042010dnspotaylorcol.3ad5f5a.html And Dez doesn't like it. So given her difficult life would anyone be surprised if she was a prostitute? Now if you thought she may have been is it more upfront to just ask the question? Now is it relevant to his job?
That's the issue here. IMO, no, it's not relevant. I would've asked Jeff if it was standard procedure to ask potential employees if there mother's were whores. I then would've asked Ireland if Parcells asked him that question in his interview. I would then ask Jeff Ireland if his mother was a whore. Then finally, before walking out, I would hand him a piece of paper with the words printed "I aced this test". He would then angrily crumble the paper and throw it in the waist bin. After I exited his office, the paper would explode.
I don't get the issue... maybe I'm just clueless. If someone asked me if my mother had sex with men for money, I'd say no, and let that be that. If they asked me if my mom did X Y and Z with men for money, I'd say no, and not really care. If they got in my face and said "Your mother is a whore, and I did X Y and Z with her" I'd beat the crap out of him. Maybe I'm different from the social norm, but the question wouldn't offend me, I'd actually laugh at it...
Oh, I would laugh at it as well. The reaction is irrelevant though. Just because you or I would not be offended by the question doesn't make the question itself any less dumb. The burning question is, is Ireland sorry he asked it or sorry it got out? Probably the latter. I like the guy as a GM, but dude has the people skills of an AIDS monkey.
Come on now...aside from Greenburg being a Jets fan and Golic being over the hill when Shula signed him, your entire post is baseless speculation. To be honest it comes across as you being the one with an ax to grind. Greenburg and Golic have never given any indication that they have any sort of hidden agenda against the Dolphins. Yes I know Greenburg is a Jets fan. Ross has never given any indication that he's looking for a way to get rid of Parcells and replace him with Peterson. Just the opposite in fact. Every time Ross has had the opportunity he's done nothing but rave about having Parcells running things. In addition, Peterson has repeatedly stated that he IS NOT "chomping at the bit to get back in the driver's seat in the NFL". However, he did say if he got back into the NFL it would be on the business side as opposed to he personnel side of things. IMO the possibility that the Dolphins would lose a draft pick for Ireland's statement is so remote it seems not worthy of consideration. There's no precedent for it. Ireland already apologized. Aside from a pound of flesh what further retribution would you like you see?
I think you're mistaken bro. I think the answer to the question is irrelevant. He could have said she was or she wasn't and both answers would have been fine. I think it was the reaction that he was looking for. There are a lot of questions concerning his character. I think Irish asked this question to 'test' that character and from when I am reading he failed.
I guess I'm just on a different wavelength with all of this. I look at it from the perspective that it wouldn't really bother me in any setting. So I can't really be upset at him for doing it to someone else. Just the same, I can't really understand why others are upset. But oh well, at the end of the day he apologized. I really don't think his goal was to be an a-hole. I think he just doesn't have very much tact, or understand the idea that some people get their feelings hurt more easily than others.
They're both irrelevant. Either he gets mad at the question or he doesn't. Neither would/should determine whether or not you draft the guy. I think there are questions to gauge that, but not this one. Cops do the same thing in interrogation. There are certain key questions to ask a perp designed to elicit an "emotional response". You then gauge all other answers off this response. Lie detectors (polygraphs) essentially do the same thing. IMHO, Ireland felt like whipping his dick out on the table. That's pretty much the type of guy he is. He asked the question because he could, and it backfired.
They don't. It just depends on the kind of GM you want to be. Its a style choice really. Me I would be more gregarious but that is my personality. Ireland comes across as more of a prick. He is a jerk for the way he handled Zach Thomas' release. He is a jerk for the way he handled the JT situation. And yes he is a jerk for asking Dez Bryant if his mother was a prostitute. An apology is nice but it doesn't excuse the behavior that caused it. Ireland has to make difficult personnel decisions. That is his job. However the way he goes about it can be done a variety of ways. Yep. Just more evidence Dez Bryant is a diva. Maybe he doesn't seek it out, I don't know, but drama seems to surround him.
I dont think the guy is sorry, he is there to do a job, and after that interview he got all he needed to know about him through his body language etc....Bryant doesnt remind me of dude who has a pokerface, and lets things run off his back, the way he said he did in the article... Bottom line, he shot it out there, dumb or not, thought is was an okay question to ask....these vetting interviews are much more in depth than people think...fans probably think they talk x's and o's...not the case, you heard GM's talk about, neighbors, schools, police as all people they call when they get background info..... The only reason he apoligized is because it got out, and he wants to take the pressure off and apoligize, I seriously doubt he is truely sorry for it, nor should he be....
Telling ZT and JT they were not worth what they wanted, and they were easily replaceable for proper value, and actually watching that to be true was a great FO call and move. Asking DB a question about his Mother is meaningless is the grand scheme of putting this franchise back to Championship form...and yet all 3 instances will have accomplished that. For those needing help in the score keeping department: FO = 3 vs. Over-reaction side = 0
Bottom line is that if this FO doesn't deliver a SB after the way they've swept away and insulted everything pre dating them........ the fans of south Fl will burn their bodies and drag them down I-95
Swept away and insulted? Really? I would hope JT and ZT were a hell of a lot more insulted by Cam Cameron and Randy Mueller than Ireland and Parcells.
Since the last Championship, everything pre-dating them speaks to the problems of the past that prevented the next championship. Statistically speaking, the odds are in this FO's favor of bringing the next championship. That alone gives them a leg up on anyone in SoFLa
Its pretty obvious he is only sorry it got out. Otherwise he would have apologized four weeks ago. Mike Ditka weighs in. You gotta love Ditka. http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/...-dez-bryant-jeff-ireland-2010,0,7491714.story
I don't have a problem with the majority of the moves this front office has made. Just the way they made some of them.
you are just angry because they got rid of your favorite players who were way past their prime the rant is old and worn out
Well I suppose for all the people who think it's OK to ask the pro question then if a player's dad is a scout leader it would be all right to ask the player if his dad is a paedophile?
It seems kind of odd that such a large number of posters here are expressing all this indignation, yet Rob Konrad is much more understanding. http://forums.thephins.com/showthread.php?t=48880
Michael Irvin once committed attempted murder on a teammate, and he has MORE supporters than just one. Should tell you something ...
