He had to apologize. Despite what people here think is or isn't ok to say to a potential draft pick in an interview, that was crossing a line. There really was no need to ask it. Like I said earlier, I understand why he asked it, but Ireland isn't a psychologist. Knowing Dez's answer to that question does neither him nor the Dolphins any good.
Its a dick move on Ireland's part and he did in fact cross a line. Whether he asked it to gauge Bryant's character is irrelevant as it is none of Ireland's damn business if she is or is not a whore.
I don't see how that could be a potential PR issue though. No writer worth his salt is going to touch it. And no reputable NFL organization is going to dignify it. That's probably not a company I or many other people will want to do business with. Odds are I'm walking out before they show me out. Jeff Ireland has taken a lot of heat lately for a lack of tact, not just from Michael Sliver. 'Nothing personal, just business' only goes so far. Or he could have just been offended by an NFL GM asking if his mother was a prostitute. Silver's original report came out before the draft. That's the thing though; Bryant's story was already well-documented. And you can bet the team had done extensive background work on its own before Bryant stepped foot on team headquarters. We all know that teams ask these shock questions. But this subject is just over the line. Glad to see Jeff has apologized.
Well if Ireland said that imagine what Rex Ryan would of asked.. So I hear yo momma a chubby chaser....
The fact that Ireland apologized proves that either he realized it was inappropriate or that at a minimum he realized that a sizable percentage of people would feel it was inappropriate. It also confirms that he asked the question. Either way it is without question that his actions reflect badly on the team.
Dumb move by Ireland IMO. I get the motive, to see how he would react and stuff, but surely with a guy who has as many already documented character issues regarding himself, there had to have been a better question for Ireland to ask to try and provoke a response from Bryant. It is what it is now, nice to see he apologized. I know here, in a job interview if he asked that question, he'd be fried on human rights violations and stuff probably. I know in interviews before for jobs I've had an interviewer ask me permission, to ask my age even since you can't discriminate hiring based upon things such as that here. I get what Ireland was trying to accomplish, but he crossed the line IMO.
Bryant just confirmed all the red flags surrounding his judgment by airing this. He's gonna wish he was being followed around the NFC East by "Feed Your Kids" and "She said NO!" type of taunts compared to what will be ringing in his ears! It'll be interesting to see how he responds over the years, cause opposing fans don't have what you'd call short memories. And that doesn't even begin to include trash-talking corners and safeties. Whether that question was right or wrong to ask, Ireland was correct in not puzzy-footing around with someone having as much baggage as him and such a past paragon of virtue as Deion Sanders for his mentor.
So we are the organization that has the cojones to ask a "your momma" question.....hahahahahaha....sweet! I respect it more and more.
You know, for those who said it was a legitimate question to test his cool, what if he responded "No my mom was not a prostitute, but I hear your wife Rachel is." Wouldn't Ireland have to be forced to give him a good grade on his demeanor? I mean, not only did he show cool by not getting mad, he turned around and threw a zinger. that's the definition of maintaining cool.
dont feel like scrolling through all the pages, but he apologizes in this article on espn.com http://sports.espn.go.com/dallas/nfl/news/story?id=5140313
I'm from Canada, and you can be sure if a question like that came up in ANY interview at any level for any job, there's gonna be trouble. There's no reason for that line of questioning. I like the FO, but wouldn't be surprised in there's action taken against, he brought it on himself. I've never heard of any questions along those lines and am not buying into any argument that it's for the good of anything. Glad he apologized, but wow, so unprofessional.
I wager not only the question, but the answer was spread amongst all 32 teams within minutes....that way no one else had to ask it. Including the Commish!
I LOL'd at that statement. I actually thought it was funny, and if he would have asked me that I would have said "Hell yeah, I'll have her swing by and tune ya up, if that's what it takes to get drafted." Being proud don't get your belly full.
Rank up beside the Suckaneers asking Myron Rolle how he felt about abandoning his teammates to go to Oxford(Rhodes Scholarship). Low class, no doubt it. If Dez Bryant was a prized free agent going wherever he chose instead of vice versa.
Re: Irelands, Dolphins arrogance unacceptable terribly dumb, if you wanted to piss him off, go in a different direction. you can ask many questions, not regarding Dezs mom. Sent from my Eris using Tapatalk
Interesting I think I was more o.O by the question of McCoy being asked if he played in a jock strap or a g-string.
I have heard of this type of questioning before in these "interviews". They are designed to elicit a response one way or another. I get it. However, there should be a line that whomever is doing the questioning should not cross. In this case Ireland crossed that line. He has apologized and Bryant has accepted. In the future I hope that all in the NFL would go about this type of questioning with a bit more decorum.
I don't think its so easy to get up and walk out when you could be costing yourself millions. Going twelfth overall and twenty third overall is a significant difference in money so its not easy to just walk out IMO. However, I do respect Bryant for staying calm. That's not easy to do, especially when someone asks something like that about your mother. I also don't think this is the proper way to find out if a kid will lie to you. There are other questions you can pose, in my opinion. Ask him how many times he's been arrested, ask him if he got in any fights in school, how many referrals he got, etc. Those are all things teams have dug up in the Draft process and Bryant should know because he took part in those. Those are just examples and I'm sure you can find some deeper questions to ask him to see if he'll lie to you about but asking if his mother is/was a prostitute is not right IMO. I realize this isn't a nice and friendly business but come on, there's got to be other things you can find out and ask to see if his head is on right.
WHO CARES if he apologized to Dez, when he only did it to keep his job. I'm sure Bill would of, or did, make him do that. Bill can always find a another guy to help with the draft that has some class that's better talking to the media without tripping on his own words every other time he talks with them as well. Jeff has been dancing around the dumb dumb line for some time, now he's dancing on the classless fool one as well. AS a Dolfan Jeff is a complete disgrace, lets not forget about Zach here ether http://blogs.palmbeachpost.com/thed...ch-thomas-dolphins-disrespected-jason-taylor/
Football is a mans' world. I don't blame Ireland for doing it. If he couldn't handle that then how is he gonna handle the media. He can't! I'm glad we didn't draft him. Maybe somebody should have asked Ryan Leaf that question. We would have known right away what kind of guy he was.
By asking him if his mother hooked? You deserved to get knocked out. Knock some sense into you. "Football is a man's world"? You probably not ever even put on the pads, just a Sunday watcher. And what MAN wouldn't get upset if a stranger comes up to them for their interview and ask them if their mother hooked? My guess is you are about to start high school in a couple of months.
Dude I'm 37 years old and very much a grown man. I played 10 years of football and my starting QB was Jeff Blake from Sanford FL. We both graduated from Seminole High School. His dad was our coach and his name is Emory Blake and he is now a preacher at his own church. I reall would like to thank you for putting me in my place though.
