To who? The police? Funk them, they're going to assume you're bad no matter what you do.

The police are the last people you should care what they think of you.

You would think and hope that more cops would realize that about the general public as well.

I think the issue is that most cop training takes a lot from military training. Except that the military is training to deal with known adversaries while the cops are dealing with people they are supposed to serve and protect. Ironically, the military seems to be focusing a lot more training of late on handling innocent civilians (not treating them like adversaries) while the cops seem to focus much more on officer safety and have no problem treating everybody like an adversary. At least that's my and much of the public's perception.

What is the point? Once you get a felony it is pretty hard to find an honest job

Yes we have had adversity, non adversary training in the military like refugees, gypies....etc...I mean it is a fine line with cops...they are taught when you arrive on scene, everybody is a suspect until they are ruled out not being one....however when they get called to a scene, most of a time a crime has been comitted...so I understand that rationale....now going about eliminating and the manner you treat people while doing it is every officers duty.....shame on the ones that act like boobs....

Hey Mor, sorry to hear about that. However, once you invite them in, they can do whatever they want. Someone mentioned they were following training, and that is exactly what they did, especially once they found out you were packing heat. Although they did treat you kinda poorly, it is standard procedure, so don't take it to heart.

    On a lighter note, the next raid on your crib is going to look like this;

Mor, if your brother served his sentence and was deported, why the violent search? Seems to me that they didn't need the show of force for s guy who essentially paid his debt to society and had no outstanding warrants, even if he WAS there.

You got me bro. When they had guns in my face telling me to get on my knees I kept saying that I didn't know it was them out there and that I have the right to have a weapon and to please not shoot me. I was absolutely terrified man

    Whoa.

It might be worth calling a lawyer and at least relaying what happened.

Gun laws in FL are not lax. Lax implies the existence of multiple loopholes or the absence of legislation entirely. Just because FL generally does not interfere with your 2nd Amendment rights does not make the state laws lax.

The behavior of some cops has very little if anything to do with state gun laws. Actually, without FL being rather accepting of the existence of the 2nd Amendment, the cops might actually be worse.

Ask any cop in Florida why they tackle perps or suspects and handcuff them. See what their answer is. I wasn't speculating with that answer. It's true.

And yes, Florida IS one of the most lax states in regards to gun laws. You should read up on it. We even have a "Take your gun to work law".

For the record, I started reading your story Mor, and I thought it was the people who took down ThePirateBay.org. Totally shocked you didn't get deported to Sweden at the end of your story.

What are they suppose to do once they enter your place and you say you have a gun.....Let you grab it and hand it to them....they have to be safe....did they assault you or just verbally direct you to get on the ground

RKBA is not the reason why suspects are handcuffed. When non-suspects are handcuffed it's because the cop is overreaching their authority. If the person isn't a threat and they're still handcuffed, then there's a problem.

Again, the fact that there is such a law on the books means that the word "lax" is incorrect. You think that because a law exists that allows rather than bars behavior means that it qualifies as lax. If there were no law, then you might be accurate in describing the situation as lax, even though that's a silly notion in a country where self-regulation and not governmental regulation is the entire point.

They could. I was pulled over for a traffic infraction in my dad's car (years ago in So. FL.). I told the cop that there was a gun in the glove (where the insurance and registration was) and asked him what he wanted me to do. He let me maintain control of the gun and the stop proceeded like normal.

In Mor's case they reasonably could have asked him to hand over the gun and stand aside. It would seem unlikely that the person who voluntarily told the nine armed officers with guns drawn that he had a gun on him was about to start shooting. They clearly weren't treating him as a suspect to begin with since they never searched him. Instead they decided to take him (or order him) to the ground and handcuff him. They made a choice that maximized officer safety but also further alienated the people they were sworn to protect and serve.

It also sounds like they may have left him handcuffed on his stomach. There have been several suits against police departments for that b/c some percentage of the population has trouble breathing in that position and it has resulted in some deaths.

In my case I didn't hand him the gun. I just put it on the passenger seat. I handed him the paperwork through the driver side window. He checked it and I think he ran the plates, then he let me go.

I was surprised he didn't control the gun. I thought he would have wanted to take it out of the glove compartment himself. But it certainly would have been overkill to have me get out of the car, get on the ground and handcuff me while he secured the firearm. Basically, he had several options. He saw that I was being cooperative so he reasonably assumed that would continue.

    UPDATE

I spoke with my older bro (who is definitely in Nicaragua) and explained the situation to him. Gave him the # of the ICE agent (which I'm willing to post if you guys want). Basically Vince had to go to the US Embassy in Managua and fill out a form proving he's there. I called the agent back and told him it was done. The guy apologized for the way things went down. He seemed sincere. He told me that for all he knew Vince was in the other room with another gun... I told him I understood and no harm done, we're all ok.

I've let it go. He says he understands that me and my brother are good kids and dodn't need guns in our faces. He thanked my brother and I for dealing with it like troopers and told me to give him a ring on his cell if I ever end up in a bind.

    So yeah... I'm good.
