Every year I pick up Lindy's draft magazine in March. Here is what they had to say about our draft picks. Jared Odrick - Strongest defensive tackle in this year's draft. "Bullish defender with quickness. He can get leverage despite his 6-5 frame and move blockers to either side to find the ball." They also have a spotlight interview. Odrick on his best asset for the NFL. "I'd like to think I'm one of the quicker d-tackles in the country. I can get off the ball. Trying to strike the opponent before they strike me. I like to command a double-team." Koa Misi - Their sleeper pick. "Misi is a high-character coach's favorite who was one of Utah's most gifted athletes and still worked harder than the walk-ons." "Misi is quick enough to chase down backs and strong enough to hold his ground on the edge, making him an ideal 3-4 outside linebacker." John Jerry - "Surprising agility to get out and around the line and good initial quickness off the snap. Massive man who isn't just big, but very strong. Broke the Ole Miss record with 34 repetitions of 225 pounds on the bench press last year - a difficult feat considering his long arms." "The brother of Atlanta Falcons 2009 first-round pick DT Peria Jerry. John was a two-time All-SEC pick." A.J. Edds - Best OLB at Pass Defense. "Edds has very good agility to shadow receivers and tight ends, even on deep routes, and the converted tight end has good hands to make quarterbacks pay for mistakes." "Strong wrap-up tackler in the open filed and around the line of scrimmage. His size and length means few missed tackles." Nolan Carroll - No write-up but they do list him as one to watch. Reshad Jones - "Intimidating hitter who protects the middle of the field. Ballhawk who keeps his eyes trained on the quarterback and has the burst to close on underneath routes." "NFL scouts see the big-hitting ballhawk as capable of making an immediate impact at either safety position." Nothing on Chris McCoy or Austin Spitler.
Thanx for posting that bro. This was a Solid draft. I understand being upset because we didn't pick a guy that we have been told is good but the guy's on the magic box. All is well and the sky is not falling we did very well. By Far the BEST Off season we have had around here in a long time.
Ok, so does this make him a FS? "Ballhawk who keeps his eyes trained on the quarterback and has the burst to close on underneath routes." Like how he can make an immediate impact at either safety position!
He's had 11 INTs in three years. So he's a bit of a Hawk but he is also a Big time hitter and sometimes gets himself into trouble going for the knock out rather than the sure tackle. However when he goes for a tackle he usualy doesn't whiff. He's a good prospect drafted in the same round as Chris Clemons was last year. Chris has the size and speed to be a damned good player too. So I'm sure these two as well as Culver for the starting FS spot. That is if the FO doesn't go after OJ or Sharper.
I read The Sporting News and USA Today's magazines today to get a little bit of an idea about our picks and I think we got some really high quality picks. What I like is they all seem like high character guys. I think Edds is on a lot of Academic honor rolls and was a finance major, and really bright guy. Misi seems like a pretty quiet person but I saw a couple interviews he gave at Utah and it sounds like he has it together. I was a little surprised we took as many linebackers as we did but let's face it....we have had some linebackers who can't tackle worth crap and can't stop runners or stay with receivers. If this doesn't light a match under Channing Crowder's butt, nothing will.
better than 2008? added... Jake Long - Franchise LT Chad Pennington - CPOY and starter Chad Henne - Starter Kendall Langford - Starter Donald Thomas - Starter Anthony Fasano - Starter Akin Ayodele - Starter Davone Bess - Starter Dan Carpenter - Starter Justin Smiley - Stater Randy Starks - Starter Jason Ferguson - Starter just 12 starters.
They were replacing some horrible cardboard cutouts pretending to befootball players from a 1-15 football team, most of whom were out of football as soon as the 'phins cut them. Going on would they be starters if they were brought in to a hypothetical 8-8 team: Jake Long - Hell yes Chad Pennington - Maybe Chad Henne - Maybe Kendall Langford - Maybe, he'd probably be stuck on the depth chart developing and would be getting a chance to be a starter this year. Donald Thomas - Yes if he ever got healthy Anthony Fasano - probably not Akin Ayodele - No Davone Bess - Probably Dan Carpenter - He's a punter Justin Smiley - Yes Randy Starks - Hell yes Jason Ferguson - Hell Yes Still a damn good off season, but not as spectacular as OMG 12 starters!!!! makes it seem.
You want to compare, think of how this group would be for this team this coming year.... Jake Long - yes Chad Pennington - No, not after his injury and Henne's development. Chad Henne - Yes Kendall Langford - Yes Donald Thomas - Maybe if he ever got healthy, but serious competition with Tsompas, Jerry, Garner, Berger, et al. Anthony Fasano - by defaut...yes. Akin Ayodele - No, likely wouldn't make the roster based on upgrades brought in. Davone Bess - at best, #3 No knock on him, but his best role is not at #1 or #2 WR. Dan Carpenter - He's a punter Justin Smiley - No. Injuries and salary say so. Randy Starks - yes, because of Fergy's suspension, but a reduced role if Fergy were back, healthy with the addition of Odrick. Jason Ferguson - Likely not. Role player even without the suspension. It was a good offseason, but will always be skewed because of being so bereft of talent prior to the Troika taking over... This years' additions: Dansby - Star and starter. Marshall - Star and starter. Incognito - Starter with the anticipated dumping of Smiley and crowded OG talent, potential talent. (Tsoumpas, Garner, Berger, Jerry, Thomas in no order) Dobbins - STs, role player but will get the opportunity to push Crowder. Odrick - #1 pick, will be either a starter or a significant contributor. Misi - Likely a starter. His competition is Q Moses and Charlie Anderson. If Anderson doesn't excel in this offseason and TC, he could be gone too. Jerry - not likely a starter, but likely a keeper. AJ Edds - Will push Crowder, along with Dobbins. Crowder has the big contract, but has had mediocre play this past year. Would it really shock anyone if Crowder isn't the guy opposite Dansby ?? Carroll, Jones, McCoy and Spitler are all projects at this point. Jones and Carroll have a very good chance of being the #4 S and #4 CB at this point. We don't know about the UDFAs (at least I haven't looked at them), but there is room to grow with this group. We needed an overhaul of the LBer corps, and while I don't think they are done, they took great strides this offseason...
ireland said something in one of his press conferences that he was gonna start him out playing FS in camps and see how he does
i like lindy's the best. nfldraftscout does the ratings for them . they can also be found here. http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft
Good read/analysis, Similar analysis from Kiper: Jared Odrick - Is not Dan Willams. Also, is not Jimmy Clausen. Koa Misi - Is/Was not Taylor Mays. What doesn't this front office understand about GOING FOR THE SEXY PICK. You know, the one we always tout? I mean, we have knee-pads here for a reason. And for God's sake, why is Jimmy Clausen still on the board? John Jerry - An offensive guard who is not Jimmy Clausen. A.J. Edds - Another linebacker. Haha, you missed picking up the greatest QB since my beloved, strong-armed Jamarcus Russell. Nolan Carroll - I don't know who this is, but it's not Jimmy Clausen, so it's okay. Just a nobody really. Reshad Jones - Is not Taylor Mays
Even if that's all he can do, WELCOME ABOARD! No more nightmares of Dallas Clark or Shockey scoring 80 yard TDs...
Correct, and D.C. is damn good. Edit - and so is B.F. for that matter. And people should never underestimate the importance of a good K/P
Two reports I have read were that he played FS one year and SS one year (I forget which) with comparable stats in both years. Since my church is loaded with both Tech and UGA fans, I hear a lot about those particular schools. Jones was seen as a "Player!"
