With Aj Edds, Where does Channing Crowder stand????

Ummm No.. Edds is nice and all but lets not get carried away. I would not be shocked if Edds played on passing downs but he will not beat out Crowder to start. Besides in 3rd and long they could always put Edds @ inside and move either Channing or Dansby outside while the other plays inside with Edds.

 

AJ Edds has no impact on Crowder. They play 2 different spots: Crowder is the weakside ILB, Edds will be the 3rd down (read: backup) weakside OLB.

Tim Dobbins plays ILB though, and he might be competition for Crowder. Probably won't become the starter, but Dobbins is definitely an upgrade to our goal line defense.

I think Crowder is a much better all around linebacker than either Edds or Dobbins. If you could combine Dobbins and Edds together you would have a hell of a LB since Dobbins is a beast against the run but horrible against the pass and Edds is great in pass coverage but couldnt fight through a blocker to save his life

 

i think ireland is hoping they can coach up edds to be able to learn how to shed blockers and fight through them. If they can do that then he would the eventual replacement but it wont be this year

Erm... we drafted a bunch of linebackers because we needed them. Crowder is the only starting linebacker on our roster who was around in 2009. Dansby replaces Ayodele, Misi replaces Taylor, and Edds will be part of the competition at WOLB. Edds has absolutely nothing to do with Crowder. He's not moving to WILB. Tim Dobbins will be the backup WILB.

Ireland says he expects an immediate impact from Edds on 3rd down in pass coverage. This means that on 3rd down, Edds will line up as the WOLB and drop into coverage while Wake rushes the passer from a standing position next to Jared Odrick.

If Crowder comes off the field on third down, it'll be because we replace him with a DB, not Edds.

Edit: And that's just one configuration. It's entirely possible we go with a 4-3 on 3rd down and Crowder has to come off because he has no role in that package. That doesn't mean Edds took Crowder's job, it means the package specifies a player not named Channing Crowder.

 

it increases our chances of getting that next great linebacker, we only need to get one right and this draft will be a success

 

LB corps (who will be cut) ?

after this year draft, One thing is obvious :

we have now too many LB, and if we choose edds, mc coy (who has the size and OLB profil of parcells guys), spitler after the dobbins trade, that means the trifecta isn't pleased with our current LB.

I thinko torbor, anderson coud be cut and saved money could be spent to sign another solid safetie starter in the next cuting list day.

Looking at the ILB position, we have bombarded it with new bodies this offseason. Dansby pushes the depth from the top. Edds, Dobbins push it from the bottom. Torbor can't possibly survive. Not sure how they plan on using Spitler, and he could impact things too. The first thing the new guys need to do is show special teams value. Then progress to work up on the defense. Crowder hasn't lost his job until someone shows they are a more complete linebacker than him. This will be tough to do as a rookie. Crowder has the advantage of years of experience, and having played along side Zach Thomas. IMO, if our #3 is better than Ayodele, then we have upgraded over the group we had when we landed Dansby.

 

those of you who see Edds staying outside in the NFL as he did in college should read this article.
An outside linebacker for Iowa, Edds had five interceptions in 2009 and routinely covered tight ends and even slot receivers. While Edds will play inside linebacker in the NFL, Ireland said he has the tools to excel in the team's nickel-coverage packages this season.

Dobbins will beat out Crowder in camp and the Dolphins will cut bait with him to save money.

For those that say Edds has no effect on Crowder....he already has. Crowder won't be out there in the nickel defense now. Edds will take that spot and we won't see TE's abusing LB's as much anymore.

Dobbins is a much cheaper guy with more upside promise as the 2 down thumper inside. The guy in 2 part time seasons has already passed Crowder's career INT and FF #'s.

 

Crowder makes no big plays, he can't cover superior athletes, his tackles are always downfield. But when he's out with an injury, its pretty apparent how much the D must rely on him for communication because it goes down hill. He's no Zach Thomas at diagnosing plays, but apparently the coaches think he's the best we have. It's a shame his production is so p@#$-poor, but you've got to figure his value as a front 7 "QB" in the calculus determining his performance. It would take a mighty special rook to be able to come in and take over that roll from an experienced vet. Zach Thomases do happen, but the likelihood is pretty darned low.

 

I think we could cut torbor ( big salary I think) and anderson (not many talent)

Well, obviously all the additions to the LB position will bring added competition. This FO is all about competition. They don't want anyone thinking their job is safe. Play at a high level, or you will get replaced. And, I definitely sense their focus is on replacing Crowder. Whether that's this season or next, his days as a Dolphin are numbered IMO.

On a side note, I would absolutely love to see a rookie beat him out in TC.

 

immediate impact doesn't neccisarily mean starting spot over crowder.our special teams were just that last year and a couple of these lb's are going to get their oppurtunity to make it much better.so assuming we find a returner we shouldn't be starting drives behind the 20 yard line and that will make a immediate impact on this team. they should also help against the return as our tackling last year is unacceptable.if you'll notice alot of the guys we brought in via draft are very good tacklers.
so while not replacing crowder or dansby or wake..they will most likely replace the folsoms/andersons/waldens(sp).

 

Crowder isn't going anywhere.... but Torbor is in trouble

in his contributions to the team & ability
lining up w/ Dansby, his game will take a quantum leap
let them all compete @ all positions
but in the end, I believe Crowder will grow
w/ the new defense & prosper

 

Don't give up on Crowder just yet. His best days may be ahead of him with a new scheme and new players around him.

On another note, why are you complaining we have too many LBs? For one, we were paper thin at ALL LB positions coming into this offseason. Two, we still play a base 3/4, albeit with some 4-3 looks mixed in, and when you play a 3/4 you can never have too many LBs. Especially since the type of D we're trying to run, we're going to have many different looks, similar to what the Ravens do on defense. We've been a hybrid since Saban but we weren't aggressive and we still played much more 3/4 since Saban established it as our base in 2005. Now with Nolan we're going to be more aggressive on D, more creative, more tactical, since Pasqualoni was much more conservative. You're going to need a lot of pass rushers(Misi, Wake, Anderson, Odrick), you're going to need sum run stoppers(Dansby, Dobbins, Crowder), and going to need coverage specialists(Dansby, Edds). So yeah, we need Lbs so we went and got 'em.

 

Edds is probably too raw at this point to play inside on early downs.

 

As that article stated, Edds did a great job covering TE's and slot WR in spread offenses throughout his career. On top of that, he is very intelligent, a hard worker, a team player, a true leader and he has the frame to add some muscle and eventually push for a starting spot at ILB. We all know how much the middle of our defense got shreded this last year and Edds will be an immediate upgrade along with Dansby. While Edds will no longer be covering WR's, I believe the experience he gained doing that will certainly help against some of the fast TE's we face in the NFL these days.

 

One thing Ireland has stressed about all these players we drafted are they are very versatile. The LB's can play inside or outside. If Edds and Dobbins can pick up the system quicky, Crowder becomes expendable.

 

I've been the biggest Crowder defender recently, but he's in trouble. Dobbins specifically looks like a decent shot to take his job.

Tim Dobbins- 299 total snaps, 2 starts, 55 tackles, 1 sack, 1 int.
Channing Crowder-717 total snaps, 13 starts, 51 tackles, 1 sack, 1 int.

Tim Dobbins was dramatically more productive than Crowder in less than half the snaps.

There's also the fact that they acquired four players in the offseason to do the same job he does. They did what, two the first season they came in to try and install the defense?

Edds isn't a throwaway pick either. He's in legitimate competition for the other ILB spot. Short term he's the Nickel guy, but they didn't draft Kevin Burnett in Dallas for that role either. They're giving him experience at what he does best, and he's going to have a chance to go further.

 

Edds is not an inside linebacker.

Like Disgustipate points out, Dobbins is the one breathing down Crowder's neck.

 

Bro, Ireland specifically said in his press conference that Edds will play ILB. So look for him to press for playing time.

I'm not sure what your basing your information off of. Disgustipate already posted Dobbins numbers next to Crowders and it isn't even close.

Again where are you gathering this information from? One scout mentioned he had trouble shedding blockers that I haven't read or something?

 

I'm with you bro. I expect this kid to press for playing time and if its even close between he and Crowder I expect the coach to do what he always does and start the player with more upside. At the very least this kid will see more and more playing time as the year goes on.

 

My thing is that in the formations where Edds will be on the field--third down pass defense--he'll be the OLB dropping into pass coverage, because Wake will be up at the line ready to rush the passer.

Tim Dobbins is Crowder's backup and job-hunter, not AJ Edds.

 

AJ is a cover ILB or " MIke " Channing is a Bangger that takes on G's or " TED " most the game.

So AJ will be Karlos Dansby's backup and Austin Spitler was drafted to be Channing's backup............If he makes the team.

Drafting AJ will let Miami use Dansby's as a 3rd down pass rusher if they want to, has lil to do with Channing other then he'll play next to him on some 3rd downs.

 

If Edds becomes Dansby's backup, that means they'd want to rotate him with Dansby on 3rd down... which I'm not sure they'd go for. Dansby's proven in pass coverage, that's one of the reasons we signed him.

Spitler and McCoy have uphill battles if they want to make the team.

 

Until the FO or the coach says other wise I'm simply not buying this train of logic. The kid was brought in and according to Our GM he is going to be an inside backer. He's not going to replace Dansby on third downs as Dansby is very good in coverage where as Crowder couldn't cover a a TE if he stood still.

Again I'm not buying the Crowder is the banger in the middle and Edds couldn't be. Crowder is only 6'2" 250 while Edds is 6'4" 246. Look for Edds to pack on more weight and could easily handle 260 or so on his frame. Hes a very solid tackler and for the love of god has to have better football instincts than crowder who consistently shoots the wrong hole.

Honestly, No one knows at this time who's going to back up who. The coaches may have a plan but I have yet to hear them reveal it. If you have a quote saying who is going to back up who please share it as I would find it most interesting.

 

he may be dansbys back up, but he's already taken crowders job on 3rd down passing situation. he will line up next to dansby in those situations, outside of that crowders job is safe from edds

Crowder has officially been put on notice. IMO if he doesnt outplay Dobbins and the rooks by a WIDE margin, theres a good chance he'll be traded or released. I assume the FO doesnt appreciate Crowder mouthing off on his radio show (Jay Feely) and they had to notice how Crowder was (foolishly) supporting Porter when it was clear his days were numbered. If he's saying that on WQAM I can only imagine what he's saying in private, in the lockerroom, undermining the coaches authority etc. We only signed him to a 3 yr deal @ age 25 so that should tell you wha the FO thinks of him long term.

Most of all he just doesnt make plays. He stinks in coverage, stinks as a blitzer, misdiagnoses plays, he's slow, doesnt play downhill, doesnt shed well, doesnt play ST, doesnt do anything well except talk smack. Im rooting for Dobbins to be our banger but I need to go and watch the SD games he started first. I could see an ILB group of Dansby, Dobbins, Edds and Folsom/Spitler w/ Torbor and/or Crowder fired. IMO Crowder better bring his A game to camp this year, and he' better keep his mouth shut too, or else, his @ss is gone.

 

Not sure what Nolan will do, but last year Bell was the 2nd LB in passing situations. Perhaps we move YB back to S in the nickel but he's better in the box/underneath so if he is @ S then something went terribly wrong w/ Culver, Clemons, J Allen & Jones @ FS.

 

Dobbins plays ILB on early downs, Edds/Bell plays in passing situations, Crowder doesnt play ST so he becomes expendable.
