Maybe a playmaker on special teams. Unless Crowder is traded, he wont be making plays on defense.

considering Channing probably will miss a few games due to injury, maybe now we won't have a total scrub replacing him. could be a nice pickup for depth and starting a few games.

Some are seriously underestimating Dobbins. He recorded more tackles in 2 starts than Crowder did in 13 starts..and as many sacks. He will probably take Crowder's job. He's not being brought in to be training camp fodder, he's being brought in to compete for a starting job. Just because you don't know anything about him isn't a sign that he's no good.

He was really good in Shawshank Redemption. ;)

Seriously though, Channing may be moving outside.

San Diego gave him a second round tender. He's not training camp fodder. He's not a starter but he is good depth at both LB positions. Also, a strong special teams player. With Crowder's knees, we need decent back up.

Any chance Dobbins can move outside on run downs to SOLB?

He wasn't a starter because SD has Cooper and Siler @ ILB, but he'll probably take Crowder's job.

I think this "taking Crowder's job" nonsense is crazy. Wont happen. Depth and nothing more. Albeit pretty decent depth.

Take it for what its worth, and I am an Iowa State homer, but this guy can start for us. He has been nothing but solid for the Chargers. From ESPN:

"Dobbins is a backup inside linebacker who ended up starting eight games for the Chargers last year. He has very good size and strength for the position. He is an active LB who plays aggressive but is still developing in terms of his reactions. He is a better run defender than a pass defender. He takes good angles to the ball and closes quickly to make plays. He is a little tight through the lower body in coverage. He lacks ideal burst in space and can be susceptible when isolated against quicker players. Dobbins has already carved out a niche as a backup ILB and productive special teams player. He will need to improve his overall consistency if he is to lock down a starting role on defense."

    Definitely not training camp fodder.

The only way I want him starting at ILB is if Channing pops outside. With that, I will be ecstatic. Then draft a FS in the 2nd.

He's not fodder, he is competition for Torbor. It surprises me though, because now I doubt we take Spitler. It is as though we picked Dobbins over Spitler with that choice (our first 6th rounder).

LOVE th Dobbins pickup. He was a stud while at ISU and was their field general. He's a physical player that I predict will be good depth with the possibility of bumping Crowder outside. Not certain that I see him as the starter, but I can deffinetly see him competing for the job.

And we got a second and fourth rounder. We stole from the Chargers. Thats a good thing. We needed better defensive players. On this first day of the draft, we got two.

We are now a much more physical team on defense. Dline was our strength...and its now stronger.

ILB was a glaring weakness at the end of the season, and I know consider it a wash, if not a borderline strength....

I think we are going to pick up a good player at #40.

The key to this draft, IMO, will be if our fourth rounders can make the team and contribute. If they can, this is going to be a very good football team.

Langford is going to get pushed big time to keep his starting job by Odrick. This is a great thing.

With all the teams switching to the 3-4, way may even be able to move Merling for a pick. Don't be surprised.

In any case, I like how this team is assembling. At the end of the season, i was depressed by the lack of good players. Starting with Dansby, things began to turn around. Then we got Incognito, then Marshall...and this kid Odrick, AND a higher second rounder than we started with....

Think of this...we basically got Marshall for a second rounder next year. What a steal. Jeff Ireland is doing a great job.

Yeah I've got no problem with the way Ireland is doing things.
Loved getting the higher 2nd pick, too. I thought that and Dobbins were something of a coup for us.

They don't see Dobbins as a replacement for Crowder. Ireland specifically says in his PC that Dobbins helps the back end of their roster.

When you consider, with or without Marshall, Henne and Hartline were going to be better just from experience. Marshall just kicked it up a notch. I think Incognito is going to give our entire line a boost of "Bad Attitude"...that was badly needed. RBs...not sure we upgraded.

DL...just got stronger. Had a top-5 3-4 DE in Starks. Now we have three strong young guys that can all vie to play opposite him. McDaniel better love to play NT...hes going to get his chance. And probably his best chance to make the team.

Our ILBs, we got a top 5 guy in Dansby...and I think Crowder and now Dobbins are two "steady" guys that can play. Not a bunch of huge plays, but young guys who can hold their own. KD will make the big plays.

Our two young CBs are going to be better just because its their second year. Hopefully Sean Smith getting called out a bit has hurt his pride and he will come with a different attitude. He has skill. He just needs to play stronger and "meaner". Vontae just needs to keep rolling.

OLB and S are areas that we are going to have to be better. I think Culver is already better than Wilson, although....lets be honest..my 70 year old father isn't much worse than Wilson. I think Clemons is the wild card there. If he can play,,,and he should be better....we get a rookie who can contribute, this is going to be a very nice squad.

I know we have an issue at NT, OLB, certainly, and maybe still at S. But this is just one day of the draft. We a good amount of picks left to address some of these issues.

I feel very good about this team. And usually, I don't.

remember when sd beat the colts in the playoffs 23-17 a couple years ago? 3rd and 2 peyton goes back to pass, who sacks him at the indy 2 and allows sd's defense to force a punt in which sd gets a fg to force OT?

    that's right...dobbins!

trust me , give him the playing time and he will turn heads

Lets hear it for Jeff Ireland who made a genius deal to trade down!

"In the trade that sent the Miami Dolphins' 12th overall pick to the San Diego Chargers, who picked Fresno State running back Ryan Mathews, the Dolphins picked up linebacker Tim Dobbins as part of the deal.

The Dolphins received the Chargers' No. 28 overall pick, their second-round pick, switching spots with San Diego in the fourth round and obtaining the Dolphins' sixth-round pick."

    http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Chargers-trade-linebacker-Tim-Dobbins-to-Dolphins.html

No one knows how Dobbins will work out but the extra draft picks alone was good enough for me. This was a draft position upgrade and hopefully a player upgrade too. I was thrilled with this.

Wow what a FO we have!
