I think Parcells is a bit of a prick, unless you are one of his guys.

But Parcells doesn't owe Jason Taylor a contract in 2010 because of how great Jason Taylor was up until 2007.
Parcells doesn't owe Jason Taylor a contract in 2010 because of how much Dolphin fans will always love him.
Parcells doesn't owe Jason Taylor a contact in 2010 because JT turned down millions more from New England in 2009 but opted to return home.

Parcells owes the fans the best possible roster in 2010. Period.

You can debate who has a better perception of JT's 2010 talent, Parcells or the Jets. But you can't argue JT deserves a roster spot simply because he is one of your favorite Dolphins.

I like Parcells. I think it's better to lose guys like Joey Porter and Jason Taylor while they still have a little tread on the tire than to go in with them as top options and finding out that there isn't enough tread. I also love the Marshall move as well as I just love being mentioned on National TV. I can remember a time pining to be like the Colts or Patriots constantly in the news on ESPN or NFLN. My only wish would be taking a shot at O. J. Atogwe rather than drafting a FS. This would make trading back even more easier to do in terms of willingness and would allow us to go LB and DL with the first few picks.

Well after reading through the JT presser thread, it appears that deal offered was a casual, agent-less, verbal, backroom deal from the Tuna to JT, not an official offer sheet sent to his agent to be reviewed and signed. I can understand him balking at such a thing.

At the same time, why the Jests? This whole thing is like eating a turd.

I think if you agree with the fo not signing jt right away, then you agree it is a business. If you agree it is a business then you can't be all pissy about jt becoming a jet. You can't have it both ways.

I tend to think it's probably a reflection of how they do business.
Remember that's how they approached Ricky Williams. Parcells handed him a piece of paper with a number on it for an extension. Basically saying this is what we are willing to pay you. Take it or leave it.
Then look at some of the other FAs that we did or did not sign. Again they seemingly assign a value to a player and pretty much indicate it's a take it or leave it proposition. Some accept the offer seeing it as fair market value while other FAs go elsewhere.
I will say I can understand placing a higher value on a younger guy like Dansby or Marshall, seeing them as more of a long term solution. While a player like Taylor would have less value because of him being more of a short term solution. As well as being someone who is pretty obviously on the decline.
Bottom line?.......I agree with you 100% - I hate seeing him go the Jets of all teams.

its not like parcells popped up out from behind a car in a parking garage in the middle of the night and gave him 30 seconds to agree to a deal, lol

JT saying they will talk after the season puts the ball back in the FO's court

i like that way of doing business. its man to man without an agent weaseling

While I am not happy about JT going to the Jets there are two sides to the story. Like I stated in Club Level, theres nothing good about seeing your favorite active player go to the team you hate more then any other team in pro sports. I live with Jet fans, surrounded by them and theyre sports fans like any other fanbase. But they hate Jason Taylor and he hates them. Its always been that way and everyone on both sides of the rivalry knows it. They wont appreciate his efforts, they have already stated as such all over sports radio the last two weeks. They dont like the guy, don't want him on there team and lets face it, he probably didnt want to be there.

But from JT's standpoint hes waited months to get an offer and hasnt gotten even a phone call from us. The Jets said they would pull the offer post draft and we still made no offer. He wanted to play, no other club showed interest and so he signed. I dont believe for a second he wanted to do so but it happened.

From the Miami Dolphins standpoint could we have handled it differently? Probably. There's no way that letting go of the franchises all time sack leader would go over well with the majority of the fanbase. Doesnt matter what we did or how we did it.

At the same time replacing Jason Taylor wont be as easy as some make it out to be. He was on the field for 80% of our sacks last year and held up well vs the run. Hes so versatile and does a lot of things well even at his age. But to give the younger players more responsibility from a performance standpoint, a leadership standpoint and an accountability standpoint the leadership has to be turned over to whoever wants to assume that role.

Yeah, I'm just about sick of Parcells too. One good season just doesn't cut it for me. His ego needs it's own skybox just to attend the games. Guy is beginning to be a joke to me, just wait until he trades Ronnie for a 2nd round pick and we are back to square one in our running game :pity:

I know I fall in the minority on this subject but unfortunately that's how I feel

Well, after hearing about JT being offered the extension in an agentless meeting... it makes me think that now that Ricky Williams has Rosehnhaus on board, chances are lower the regime will end up keeping Ricky. Maybe Ricky regretted accepting that deal without an agent to negotiate for him, and felt Parcells lowballed him, so this time he got the hard-negotiating Drew Rosenhaus on his side.

I have to wonder if the Front Office doesn;t like to 'buddy up' to a player to get them to sign a quick informal deal without and agent so they can get the player on the cheap... but if market value and agents come into play, they'd rather let the player walk.

    That's what happened to JT.

Maybe it'll happen to Ricky after this year, now.

I don't think it's going to be that good for JT up there when it comes to the fan base if they don't win a Super Bowl this year. Those of you who were around in the 80's, imagine if Mark Gastineau had come here at the end of his career.

The PLAYER was old and had nothing left as exemplified by his play on the TWO teams he played for AFTER the Phins.

Doesn't care? He offered him a contract. He received, "Talk to my agent."

In many a persons eye that would represent grandstanding. Tim Bowens was double teamed for years for these two. Do you recall his exit speech?

.............and that's the fact Jack. Take your 5 million dollar per year arse elsewhere.

Yes and the sucker in Washington paid him a fortune for one injured, nonproductive year. Would you rather Parcells paid him just for the sake of memory?

.....and he knows how to deal with people. He walked up to Ricky Williams tired old arse and offered him a contract. And Ricky Williams said, "Thank you." Jason Taylor's tired old arse said, "Talk to my agent."

Legends? Legends usually produce something. These two accounted for 10 million per year in salary during a decade of .500 ball. I would think that "legends" that accounted for 10 percent of a 53 man rosters salary could produce a little more.

Really, who gives a rats arse about a one day contract. It doesn't matter to a hill of beans. If you are good enough to reach the Hall of Fame, YOU choose what team you enter with.

The fact is that Jason Taylor overvalued his services back in November. Bill Parcells was proven to be right when Taylor went to the Redskins. Rather than show a little gratitude for bringing him back home, Jason Taylor rejected the November offering. Jason Taylor repeated his original mistake. Now he's just covering his arse because he will always live in South Florida. It's the same thing he attempted to do when he went to the Redskins. This dude hasn't been loyal to the Dolphins. He has been paid a king's ransom. Get over it.

    1) Your avatar is scary

    2) this wins the award for most absurd post of week. As much as I loved Zach Thomas, BP getting rid of him was the absolute right thing to do. Zach had nothing left in his tank as shown by his performance after leaving the team. JT is heading down the same road. He might not be at the same downgraded level that Zach is, but his poor relationship with the front office makes it an easy decision.

THIS is a business. A business to build a winning football team, not to catering to players feelings. Yes, it would have been great to see zach in a final press conference, but get over it and move on please. I have ZERO desire to see a final press conference from JT. he's a friggin JET now. I hope he goes up there and does extremely poorly as he watches us win the division this year.

And the impact on JT retiring a dolphin is pure speculation. You have no idea what our front office will look like in a few years.

I have not seen a statement regarding the querry. But IMO, it really doesn't matter.

The statement that I did see was "I played for a million dollars last year." And that statement was made as if the sum was an insult. So let's say Parcells walked up with that post it note with a 1 year, 1 million dollar offer again. Would it have been taken as an insult? Obviously the 2009 season paycheck seemed like an insult to Taylor.

Taylor said he was "old school" in regards to contract negotiation. I got some news for him. He doesn't know "old school". Jason Taylor played for contracts while owners learned salary cap "on the fly". The Jason Taylor era is the reason why we find ourselves with no CBA on this day.

I think him asking to do it later and with his agent isn't asking anything abnormal. Displaying it as such is dishonest and convenient.
And the nfl built itself into a business, if they didn't want it to be about money they wouldn't make people pay so much for the nfl package, jerseys, etc.

Sick of Parcells? Far from it!

Finally, we have adults running the front office - with all that that encompasses.
They're not about to trade up one position to get Carey, trade a second for AJ Feeley, a 3d for Lamar Gordon, or resign someone who's outlived his usefulness. You don't hear "silver lining" rhetoric in PC's after a loss anymore. This FO is about accountability!

They took a sincere shot at Rolle, offered him a generous deal but bowed out when The Giants backed the Brink$ truck up paying an above-average FS top league dollar. Ditto Clark, who thought he'd be breaking the bank, even after being at best average when Polomolu went down. Obviously the FO places a value on each player and after seeing JT about as "up close and personal" as anyone can, they placed a value of "Zero" on him. For them to let him go to a divisional rival says to me that they're either not concerned about him hurting us, or conversely, they foresee him lining up against us as being a benefit for our O.

    To the contrary....

It is dishonest and convenient for Jason Taylor to suggest that Bill Parcells walking up with a "post it note" is abnormal. Is it possible that Jason Taylor didn't read one of the three newspapers that have published the way in which Ricky Williams was offered? Is it possible that ever man on the 53 man roster did not know what and how Ricky Williams signed his recent contract?

Forget about "dishonest and convenient" for a moment. Let's talk about shameless. I never heard a word about contract negotiation from Bill Parcells..........not one word. Bill Parcells didn't call a press conference at HIS facility in Davie to announce what and how Jason Taylor was offered. Nope! Bill Parcells went up to a MAN and said "Will you play for this?" The man didn't even say "talk to my agent". Those are MY words. The man said, "Now is not the time."

So why did Jason Taylor call a press conference to piss and moan about not being offered the same contract six months later? Was it because he shopped around and found his worth? Did he not do that already prior to the 2009 season?

You want to know dishonest and convenient? The answers Jason Taylor gave at HIS press conference. Because there is nothing about the way he was handled that is abnormal. The overpaid portion of his career is over. He just didn't realize that fact soon enough.

Its a business. And why does he have to do it parcells way. And he could have said now is not the time for many reasons. The fact is bp offered, jt said no I want my agent present and to do it later, bp said fine, and now the fo is saying hold on we may replace you, but if not, we'll call you. Sorry no matter how you try to spin it JT didn't ask for a lot by asking to have his agent present, and he doesn't have to do it bps way.

    Because a business has management.

.......and every one of them had the perogative to do so. No harm, no foul.

Who is spinning? The question was "tired of Parcells". I said "Hell no." Not only did I say "Hell No" but I said "I like it." So who is spinning?

The dude called a press conference to say "goodbye". All I saw was a bunch of pissing and moaning.

And like all business, the employees have a right to protect themselves like by asking for an agent to be present.

    agreed.

And I'm sure if he wasn't going to the jets it wouldn't be seen as pissing and moaning
I'm not going ot say the Fo was wrong to a point, just like I won't pretend jt didn't ask somewhat for what has happened, although I will say this along with how they treated zt should at least show people they can be wrong in how they treat the faces of the franchise and those we all have grown to love. I just don't blame JT for going where he felt he had to.

These guys also have to realize that there is no monetary value in nostalgia for the 53 man active roster. Join the old timers circuit for that payment.

These players (Taylor, Thomas) are not Marino. In his 20th season, Marino was not going to be replaced by anyone better than him. He might have needed a cane to get back to the huddle but he was going to be better in the pocket than the other two on the sideline.
