IMO It's stupid to say who has a better class right now based upon stars. Why don't we actually see who pans out. Btw one reason for the lact of stars is that either Butch Davis or Jimmy Johnson (forget) before last season, told Shannon to go after players he believes fit his style and not put emphasis on stars and rankings, and he took that to heart.
This. I must admit that I have a very minimal regard for college football, but you guys freaking out over what some third party website thinks of recruits is silly. Worry more about what the coaches think of the recruits, and whether or not the kids have a chance to excel at their position.
That may be true but in almost every battle for a recruit Florida, Miami, and FSU they lost. Miami wanted some of those kids so they were turned down not that they weren't interested. I am not saying ratings determine how well a kid will be in college but its always nice to the higher rated ones because they are rated that high for a reason (Better athletes, Instincts, intangables, But you get the point.)
come on Alex. I agree that the stars don't mean everything. However, are you telling me the Canes weren't interested in more 4 or any 5 star recruits? Yeah....... I've got oceanfront property in Arizona for you if you believe that. The starts don't mean everything BUT it's clear top rated talent is shying away from Miami when this was VERY different in the past. Shannon's number one quality people were reveling in when he was hired wasn't coaching ability, it was the perception that he'd be a top recruiter keeping the top talent in Miami and FL. coming to the U. Aint happening. That IS a concern. You guys are downplaying top recruits simply because they didn't get very many. If the U had drawn 5 5 star prospects that's all everyone would be talking about. Lets be real.
Where we road trippin' this year? The Horseshoe baby... I'm in. There is no way I'm not going up to Ohio for that game. EDIT: Well, unless the Dolphins are home with a 1PM start the next day. Didn't think of that. Georgia will do (GaTech)
I agree with that, But a 5 star IMO has a better chance at stardom. These "3rd party websites" put alot of money and resources in scouting these players. Its not like they are pulling names out of a hat. OSU game should be a good one.
Let's see how Meyer looks with Tebow in the NFL. Anyway....check the recruits....the Canes will have more NFL players in 2 years time than the Gators will. (Shannon vs. Meyer recruiting H2H) So who is the best recruiter? So Shannon was 3rd this year..it means he is third? No. Where was he last year? Shannon is 2nd,,and that is only because the Gators are winning. We have seen this movie before.
So what? Guys like Kiper and McShay are paid well to spend every waking moment evaluating college players, and their opinions are ultimately worthless. A website run by a Notre Dame fan and seconded by a Gators fan thinks UM had a bad signing class. BFD.
Gators will do just fine with John Brantley at the helm. Thats great that the Canes will have more players in the NFL in 2 years. Meanwhile the Gators have the better record with apparntley less NFL talent. Shannon is not better than Meyer at recruiting. He had a better class one time and that was only cause of the Northwestern kids. That year Meyer was still very close while in other years Miami has not even been close. Shannon is 3rd because this is the only year to judge Jimbo Fisher @ FSU who had a very impressive class considering all the change. Scouting players for NFL and college are different for obvious reason. Please find one post where I mentioned the Canes had a Bad Class! PLease find it and show it to me. Canes had a good class but not a great class like FSU and Florida.
Of course they're different. But the same principle still applies: at some point, outside opinion becomes meaningless, because ultimately they have no idea what happened in the recruiting process or why. It's also way too early to grade recruiting classes for the same reason that it's extremely premature to issue NFL draft grades the day after. Please point out where I said that you specifically thought this was a bad class. I'm referring to the general attitude in this thread, not a specific post or person.
This I almost forgot. I'm predicting a home split but I'd love to sweep you guys in our two season show down.
Yeah they are different but there are tons of scouts at combines and games all over. There is not one scout for one wesite. There are 3 major websites that I know of that put alot of time and effort into evaluating recruting. This does not even include coaches themselves who probably give there opinions at times. I agree that its way to early to grade the classes. I just think the higher the rank the better chance they have at success due to the intangables that got them ranked so high. I just think Shannon is not nearly as good of a recruiter as we may have once thought.
Good news for you Cane fans and Henderson has reopened his recruitment rumor is he is Cane bound. I think that would be a great pick up for you guys. Being the Dark Horse and all for him. Sounds to me he wants to play somewhere warm.
Again, I care less what third party scouting organizations think than what the coaches and program members think. After all, if those third party scouts were so good, then they'd be hired by football programs looking for any advantage they can get. But I'm more referring to your agreement with me as all that was necessary.
Fellas, Randy Shannon is going to be undervalued as a recruiter this year and Urban will be over valued. UF is coming off a great 4 year run with the most popular CFB player in 25 years runnnig their team,, Shannon is coming off rebuilding Cokers disaster....it is more about circumstance than a huge talent divide as recruiters...Shannon had a few 4 and 5 "star" skill guys targeted if anyone cares but he also has a very yound team at the skill positions and guys are not going to play quickly coupled with NO ONE trusts their own evaluation more than the U...sometimes the recruiting services agree...sometimes not, and history shows after guys commit to the U, they get downgraded....look at Henderson he was coincensus #1 forever...until the U became a serious contender for his services and Floyd committed to UF...UF has holes at both WR positions and Deonte ain't exactly living up to billing and recruited athletes with the "stars", and they had a great class.....Shannon fill needs along the line and at LB/TE positions that do not carry a lot of "stars", Shannon did not go from a great recruiting class two years ago to being unable to recruit in two years and his rep is awesome with HS coaches....the divide is not that big and IMHO you cannot say Shannon is the #3 guy any more than you can say Meyer is #3...they are too damn close and both very good recruiters.......you cannot differentiate their talents until they are both in the same circumstances, was Coker a great recruiter and talent judge when he was reeling in the 5 star Ryan Moores and Kyle Wrights of the world to lay an egg in coral Gables?
Henderson got owned by Ronald Powell all week in the Aemy practices and Powell moved up. Thats the reason and it had nothing to do with how good he was. Florida does have a hole at WR but I am confident with the guys we have coming in. Also we get Debose back from injury. Canes coaches sure had Arthur Brown pegged right.
First, I did not see all of the practices but watched the game.....from what little I saw there is no way Powell "owned" Henderson but you are entitled to you opinion, second they played on the same team so you cannot evaluate the game, third on practice it was bump practice where a GREAT athlete running a 4.5 like Powell is obviously going to show well against a mauler like Henderson when he is not allowed to maul, like I said IMHO you are entitled to your opinion but if you think production in an AS game will move a player up to the top spot when you have spent two years evaluating tools then IMHO you SUCK and are not very good at what you do...and I mean the recruiting services and not you personally... As for UF WR's, I agree I think they will be fine and DT actually looked like he woke up at the end of the year, and I agree Dubose has a high ceiling potential wise....so I agree FWIW that they will be fine. Brown was a miss, it happens but it was someone that a lot of people missed on because everyone wanted this kid and he was labeled cannot miss....not sure what you are getting at...everyone whiffed, Meyer included......me also, I though AB was a future STUD.....it happens,,,,, just goes to show nothing is guaranteed...... I was way wrong on AB, so was UM...so were a lot of people.....so not sure what your point is?
What do you guys think of WR Allen Hurns? I've never seen him play, but I know a lot of people in the city since I used to live there and they seem to have high hopes for him. I'm asking because his mother works at Walmart and I went into her line after a Canes game last season (had on an Ed Reed jersey) and she started raving about him. Every time I walk into Walmart and she's there, she brings him up again...
Not a lot of film on him to be honest, maybe someone has watched him live? From the little I saw and it was very little he has a very good vertical second gear but honestly he is a long way away,,,,he has spaghetti feet meaning he naturally wants to cross step his routes rather than break on his open leg, he does not naturally dip into his cuts, he does look liked he will fight for the ball and he does snatch the ball. His speed is supposed to be very very good but again I am not sure anyone that is not directly involved in the process has seen that much film of him. Does he play as fast as he times...not sure? Honestly if he does then he probably has some big upside because he has some size and has not played a lot so he will improve more than a polished guy coming out of HS............but has a long way to go IMHO. A lot depends on how he works and reacts to a very deep group of Wr's at the U and iuf his speed translates to pads on speed.
That's what I thought in the back of my mind while co-signing his mother on Hurns becoming a superstar... this is a VERY, VERY deep WR group, and it almost always is. We'll see, though. Anyone have an update on Henderson? That would be a ground breaking recruit, IMO, especially since it would slide Franklin back over to LG.
Don't be surprised by Ben Jones keeping him inside rather than Henderson. Personally I would not even focus on Henderson, he is not signed, move on....but that is just me. Franklin is not going to embarass hnimself as a tackle though....IMHO.
Ive heard he has opened up recruiting. Some stuff Ive read is that his dad as said to all the head coaches is "what can you do for me" Henderson's dad seems to be trouble.
With that schedule, Miami either goes really high up the rankings really fast OR the season is over real quickly.
That's cool of him to pose with a fan of another team, and let them put their logo up for the pic. Nice job Tebow, very classy man.
I wouldn't get too carried away. I read an article in the Orlando Sentenial where he had no idea she was going to do that. He was a good sport afterwards thou. My brother counted to 3. ‘1…. 2….’ I threw up the U. BOOM! Tebow turned to me and said, ‘Did you just throw up the U?’ I smiled and nodded. He said, ‘Aw, c’mon,’ but was VERY nice about it. He really should have made me delete it.” http://blogs.orlandosentinel.com/sp...mpaign=Feed:+sports/college/uf+(Swamp+Things)
So the Canes go 4-12 in conference play and are now in the ACC Semi Finals vs. Duke Two impress neutral ground victories... a slaughtering of Wake Forest and a tough nail biter victory over VaTech
ESPN's documentary on the University of Miami football program was such a hit that the creators have begun working on a sequel. Director Billy Corben said the new film, It's All About the U, will focus on Hurricanes football between 1992 and 2002. The first movie, called The U, primarily focused on the 1980s, through 1991. Interviews with former Canes are being lined up for the first three weeks of April. ``Then we'll edit it the rest of the year'' while juggling nonsports projects, Corben said. He would love for the sequel to air on ESPN but hasn't discussed it with the network. Corben likely will have other options if ESPN passes. The idea of doing a sequel ``started as a lark,'' Corben said. ``[Former UM cornerback] Mike Rumph twittered after the first movie, `What about the U-2?' A few weeks ago, we said, `Why don't we just do it?''' Corben said the sequel ``will cover the Pell Grant scandal and the program's downfall and give Butch Davis his due for rebuilding the program. Butch did something extraordinary that deserves to be acknowledged.'' The film will spend considerable time on the 2001 team -- put together by Davis and coached by Larry Coker -- ``which is considered one of the best teams of all time,'' Corben said. ``It all comes down to what Alonzo Highsmith said at the end of the first movie about the program's success: If they had accomplished all of this at a major football university like Alabama, the school would have built monuments. ``This sequel will be the monument to the 2001 team even if the university is not as enthusiastic to memorialize their accomplishments.'' Corben also will reflect on the 2002 team that lost the Fiesta Bowl (and the national championship) to Ohio State after a highly questionable pass-interference call against UM. ``We have Larry Coker talking about that,'' Corben said. ``We didn't use any of Coker's interview in the first movie.'' Corben said UM declined to cooperate with the first film but ``I hope they will be more reasonable this time around.'' He said he wants to interview only two people currently employed by the university -- former athletic director Paul Dee (who teaches at UM) and strength and conditioning coach Andreu Swasey. The U was ESPN's highest-rated documentary ever, with a 1.8 rating and 2.3 million viewers on its first airing. By comparison, other documentaries in ESPN's ``30 for 30'' series averaged below a 1.0 rating. ESPN said it will release a DVD of The U -- with about 30 minutes of deleted scenes -- on Amazon.com, but it isn't available yet. http://www.miamiherald.com/2010/03/19/1537030/the-u-sequel-on-um-rebirth.html
Miami Spring Game Pics and Some Quick Thoughts Beautiful day on Saturday so I drove down for an up and close at the Canes. Jacory didn't play as he's still recovering from the surgery on his thumb. A few things that stuck out: 1. Adewale Ojomo #97 is huge and is going to have a monster year (sat out all of last year with a broken jaw). 2. Bailey-Ojomo-Wesley-Robinson give us the best group of pass rushing ends since 2001-2002. 3. Allen Bailey can play in the NFL right now so thank god he came back 4. Our WR's were catching balls all over the place. 5. Travis Benjamin is the fastest Cane I've seen in a long, long time. 6. Safety Vaughn Telemaque #7 is also poised for a huge year. 7. This is the biggest team we've had since RS took over. 8. OL got beat up but remember it was the 1st team D going against second Team O and vice versa. 9. The women in Miami are out of this world and I really miss living down there. 10. I'm no longer a fan of Warren Sapp and for purposes of keeping this G-rated, I won't elaborate. Link
