Here's why WR shouldn't be a priority this year

I know there's been quite a tizzy about drafting Dez, wanting to dump Ginn, the rest of the core are pedestrian, etc.

I've said it all last season and I'll say it now, defense is our biggest need, specifically the front 7.

Look at some stats from the AFC last year:

    On Defense:
We gave up 24.4 points a game. That puts us at 14th out of 16 teams we were in direct competition with for a playoff spot. Our defense, in the most important defensive stat was worse than defensive juggernauts like Oakland, Jax, Browns and Texans.

We allowed 349.3 yrds a game. That put us at 11 out of 16.

We took the ball away on turnovers for a grand total of 21 times. That put us at 14 out of 16.

We sacked the QB for a grand total of 34 times. That put us at 10 out of 16.

Our defense sucks. I'm as excited as anyone else, about Dansby & Nolan, but they are not enough to right this ship. We need more playmakers on defense. I'd rather see them spend the entire draft on defensive needs and go with our offense as is.

Our defense was not great but we have made changes already. We need to do the same on offense

You can look at it this way....
the offense was always 3 and out(over loading the box to stop the run) causing the D to be on the field all the time

A healthy mix between the two is what I would like to see happen. Although I would like to see a little more defense than offense. I posted a mock in the draft forum just a few minutes ago titled "just a thought..."

I went with two WR and two TE, but made a few trades for extra picks and the remaining picks were all defensive players. Mostly DE and OLB with a FS and ILB thrown in the mix.

D, while there is no denying that our D was less than spectacular, there is one, indisputable fact that can't be overlooked this offseason. Our O has no/nada/none/not any/nary a one playmaker...quick strike guy. We have no Leon Washington, Larry Fitzgerald, Jason Witten or Adrian Peterson. We don't have anyone that can make a big play when it's required to be made. Therefore, a big play WR may not be necessary for this offense to get to the next level, but some type of playmaker must be acquired...that is if you want this team to move into the top 8 teams...regardless of what is done to improve the D...

Our defense needs a complete overhaul though... ILB, DE, and CB are really the only positions I'm comfortable with.

Actually there's a second indisputable fact, had our defense allowed one less TD a game, we'd have been in the playoffs, with our offense as is. What you want is to put nitrous on a car with four flat tires. Our defense is horrible, no matter how pretty we make the offense (that scored plenty to win last year), we won't get much further.

Its true, you could. You could also look at our time of possession and realize that simply isn't true.

I agree the defense sucks. However, I don't think we need to draft defense solely. I'm high on Bryant, and would be upset if we passed on him as I feel he'd be the BPA at that spot if he fell.

Also, what those stats don't show is that we had two rookie corners and a horrible safety who was cut. I have to think that Smith and Davis will be better, and that whoever we add at FS will be an upgrade over Wilson.

When I look at a team like the Saints or the Pats or Colts or Cardinals for that matter, I don't see a dominant defense. I see teams that put up points are put pressure on the oppostion to put up points. This is going to cause turnovers. You force the other team to score, they'll end up making mistakes sooner or later. The NFL is now a passing league and bend-but-don't-break defense league.

  10. Larryfinfan

    Larryfinfan 17-0...Priceless Club Member

Absolutely, D...this is also a fact. But it speaks much louder to me that we don't have a guy that the opposing D is afraid of to break it at any time. Brown can be that guy at times, but you can't rely on scoring all your points in "3-yards-and-a-cloud-of-dust" in this day and age of NFL football. You have to, at times, score with a bolt, rather than a thud and we can't do that with the current personnel. Sure, one less TD against the Saints and Colts makes a huge difference, but one more score, one more big play by a WR or a punt returner or a TE running a seam route on what seems to be a run up the middle and that makes all the difference in those games as well. Puts them out of reach. Indy can do it, the Saints can do it, the Vikes can do it, the hated jests and pasties can do it...Miami can't...

we need someone who strikes fear in to the d we are facing... theres no one on our O that does that... no one that has to be gameplanned for. brown is a good but not great rb so he doesnt count as someone a D would game plan for or go out of their way to stop. he simply doesnt make enough WOW plays. We need D help, yes but I say we go offense 1st and then , in this deep draft, pick up some upfront help on the d-line and lb corp. seriously, stop being a fan for one sec...who on our offense would you drop 100 bucks for a jersey on? on D we got dansby now... hes our big name there, our offense has nada, zero...unless you want to make a case for jake long and hes doesnt score so nuff said.

Again, you're placing the importance of one player who gets a handful of touches a game over an entire unit. It makes no sense. We had a breakout player on O, we'd have won maybe 2 more games. A better D, we would have won several more. Its simply more important to fix the D, before we worry about adding another big time player, especially when we have Brown.

You can't be serious. Ronnie Brown is a damn good back when healthy, but better WITHOUT ARGUMENT than Chris Johnson and Adrian Peterson? No way. I'd trade a "guaranteed" healthy Ronnie Brown and an entire draft worth of picks for either player any day.

Insert Bryant or Marshall for Ted Gin and we win both of those games....and a couple others.

Several years ago we had the leagues leading rusher and a top 5 defense and missed the playoffs.....because our passing game sucked. And now, it's even more of a passing league.

When you can put up 35 points a game, any defense looks better.....ask the Super Bowl Champions or the team they beat.

You don't need a Ravens 2000 defense, just some play makers in the core positions..

Good luck with your logical premise FinD, our defense was not playoff caliber, the offense was, but when it is a man crush/fixation..nothing will penetrate the fog of wr lust.

    B Marshall was what..a 4th rd pick?

See.. you were already One Starred...

What does AP or Chris Johnson bring that Ronnie can't. Not stat-wise. One player can't win a Superbowl. I'm sure Mike Ditka traded an entire draft for a guy who plays for us right now. Seriously, AP and CJ2K are better backs but a healthy Ronnie is all we need. The Saints won the SB with three backs, none with 1000 yards on the year. AP nor CJ throw passes, rush the QB, or intercept passes. If we had AP or CJ instead of Ronnie Brown we wouldn't be any closer to winning a Championship because RB is a limiting factor. We have a SB caliber RB already.

    That's a stretch....

We need a WR NOW.....right, ****ing now.......not after we spend several mid round picks over the next few years looking for bargains and diamonds in the rough.

No one wants a WR because of a man crush......we realize what it could do for this team.

Should I search the forums to see if you made any posts on how the Jets were lucky to back into the playoffs? You know you did, Padre...lol

Edwards is better than anyone we have.....and he was a big play guy. He torched the hell out of us. And when the Jets grab another good WR and we can't keep up, you guys are going to want even more defense.

The problem is that the stats being used in this thread are largely irrelevant. Poinst scored or points allowed are poorly correlated with winning. Meaning that there will be some teams that score a lot and win and some that score a lot and lose.

To win in this league you need an offense that passes efficiently (7.0 YPA or better) and a defense that can stop the pass. We were sub par on both sides of the ball. To improve that the two positions that would have the greatest impact are WR/TE for the offense and FS for the defense. At #12 we may have the option of adding Bryant of E. Thomas. If Bryant is there then we should add him b/c he would be the BPA. If he isn't ther then we should add E. Thomas.

If we had last years defense, with a stud WR, we would get walked over alllll day long.

It's got to be a combination of the two. If it requires us to pick early on Bryant, or trade for someone who can scare defenses, then we need to do that. But while WR is an important priority, we'll maybe win an extra game, or two, if we played with our defense from last year. Any legitimate TE had their way with us, bad. Does no one remember all those ridiculous plays we had made on us constantly? I sure do.

That has nothing to do with this teams current lack of play makers....

Well maybe they are magical........because teams that have them win SB's

I rarely drink, never really been my thing.

As far as the defense.....after we sign JT we'll need one OLB.

I'd wait on NT other than a late round flier

My first priority on defense would be a ball hawking safety...a play maker

How much better talent wise do you think the Saints and Colts defenses are than ours?

Like I said, 35 points a game makes your defense a whole lot better

Ok so then you're saying you have a man crush on some defensive guys?

Because other than that I fail to see what any of this has to do with man crushes or Brady Quinn.

Unless you're just desperately trying to win this argument by saying that those of us in the WR/play maker camp are just skipping around with our heads in the clouds. Which is hardly the truth.....the Dolphins need for play makers is a widely accepted notion.

And we all sat and watched 4th rd pick Brian Hartline, who was universally panned, make big play after big play.

The D needs work, alot of work, to the point that I have to put some trust into the "magic coach" Mike Nolan because even with Dansby we still a FS who can run and we still need a Nickel Lb, there are just holes everywhere.

The opposite, I see so many holes on Defense I cannot focus on just one player, I know who I don't want (dan williams) but not really who I do want.

It was the same in 07 JS..WE'VE GOT TO DRAFT BRADY QUINN WE HAVE WENT TOO LONG WITHOUT A QB!!!!!!!

Substitute "Dez Bryant" for B Quinn.

This discussion is unwinnable, for those who want a Wr it is similar to thinking a certain woman is particularly beautiful, no amount of argumentation will pierce that veil.

My offensive "guy" is Jermaine Gresham, imho he is the best of both worlds and can be an every down player as either a Receiver or Blocker, but even then the Defense is just an open wound that must be stuanched then cauterized with an influx of talent.

In some ways I would not mind taking Ro McClain at #12 and sending Crowder to the unemployment line..sorry Channing...

And 2 of those holes are at WR and TE....both of which are screaming for an upgrade.
