I find no reason to put up any smoke screen. Having the first pick and no trade partners is forced the Phins to make a go for one of the top five players. The ball is in our hands we have the pick. So we just research the top guys and pick to best player who fits our greatest need. It's not rocket science. We really don't have a lot of options. If we had a trade partner, and we don't, that would change things alot.

Crazy how us "idiot" fans are more focused on improving our Dolphins then petty college football garbage.....kinda funny because rather they are man enough to admidt it or not..alot of people hated Ginn because he was a Buckeye.

    Funny, I know.

Parcells expects No. 1 pick to sign

Mods you can merge this with the Jake L news if you want.....

    as per JOHN CLAYTON
    4/09/08
It's pretty evident Bill Parcells expects to sign the No. 1 pick in the draft. With a new Dolphins owner coming aboard and plenty to do to reshape the roster, Parcells cannot be held hostage by a training camp holdout. Michigan tackle Jake Long was the obvious choice to be one of the first players to enter negotiations with Miami. Parcells apparently doesn't want to take Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan with the first pick. He'll try to get the best deal with Long, defensive end Chris Long of Virginia or LSU defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey. With the first pick expected to get a contract in the neighborhood of six years and $60 million-plus, Jake Long could try to wrap up something a day or two before the draft.

NFL Network's Adam Schefter confirms that the Dolphins will not enter contract negotiations with Boston College QB Matt Ryan.
It appears Bill Parcells and Co. have written off Ryan as a potential No. 1 selection. In other news, Ryan will be among six players invited to the NFL Draft in New York. The others are Darren McFadden, Chris and Jake Long, Vernon Gholston, and Glenn Dorsey. Sedrick Ellis was snubbed for an invite.

    Hmmm,

Singed BEFORE the draft....imagine that. I must say the "non-interest" in Ryan with the number 1 pick makes me happy.

i love this approach. agree to terms, then we'll draft you. im sick of all this players holding out crap. especially when these guys haven't even played a single down in the NFL... Glad we have parcells & company running the show though.

This is Parcells' style. He has no interest in playing games with rookies.

He told Mike Francesca last week that his #1 pick will be signed before the draft, take it to the bank.

God, PLEASE don't spend the first overall pick on a guy with an injury problem! (Dorsey)
I don't care if he signs for a dollar a year, we do NOT need any more injury problems!

Hopefully the thinking of the players/agents will be that taking a cheaper kind of deal that will ensure them to be selected at 1 will actually work better than declining such an offer and falling a few places to where you would get less anyway. I think that's probably why Parcells is trying to squeeze the cheapest deal out of those three, acting like we're happy to take any one of them. I am sure, in reality, Parcells knows exactly who he wants.

I have to sat I'm very happy with drafting Jake Long. I would be ok with Chris but I feel that Jake will have more impact where we need it from the getgo. You have to remember that Bill doesn't want to be made to look like a joke here. Condon better remember that too. The drop in money could really hurt Jake if Condon doesn't play ball properly. Yes I really like this idea. Get it on Bill!

I always felt he was the favorite but would rather see C.Long or Gholston be the pick. If Condon doesn't scare Parcells and Co. away with his ridiculous contract demands for a rookie then I think he will be the pick, I won't be upset if he is the pick I would be disappointed. Wouldn't surprise me to see Flacco be drafted by the Fins if Jong is the pick.

Agree 100 million percent. I was all for Chris, and still wouldn't be upset, but i started thinking Jake Long makes the most sense while looking at the roster. It isn't the sexy pick... but who cares. It's a need and he's a great talent.

Signing our pick 2 days before the draft just tickles me pink! Sure, I love surprises as much as the next guy, but I love my Phins more, and this makes us better able to draft well IMHO and enables us to eliminate the holdout potential of the #1 pick, get them under contract right away so they are sure to get started early and can contribute to our team as a starter next season & make an impact, like I want from the #1 pick.

I'll accept knowing the pick in a heartbeat, then let us all wonder who we take in the remaining rounds for fun.

Not really. We don't know how well he will be at LT but we know were getting someone that will anchor the right side for years to come. Its not a bad pick its the safest pick in the draft.

If he's negotiating with Jake Long they're negotiating with Matt Ryan. No need to bring him in since Condon represents both

More like, no need to waste the time talking about Ryan. If they were negotiating Ryan too dont you think they wouldnt of made a point to say otherwise?

Well that's how I feel. I know there are some who think a team may be interested in trading up to get someone like Long. But this draft is so full of high caliber OTs, and when you figure the high cost of trading up to that #1 spot; then look at how much the #1 overall pick is going to expect to get paid, it just makes more sense to not trade up.....my opinion.

They're trying to get someone to blink.

they already know what he's demanding, probably 70 million. Remember, one month ago they were only talking to Condon about Ryan and Jake was on the sidelines. Now they're coming to Jake saying how about 55 or so. If Ryan comes down he's back in the mix

Which is outstanding on so many fronts. It secures our top player coming in and allows him to get in the starting lineup right away. It puts pressure on our other picks to get signed quickly, and sets perameters for those signings. It takes away dramma and distraction that can hinder a team and set them back.

Great news that we are handling things in an aggressive manner.

NFL Network does it as well not as much but they still do it. NFLN has very little commercials during the draft compared to ESPN who are advertising whores.
