The players were told last week that the union was going to make one last run at it.

It would appear that ownership feels they've got the upper hand.

This would have made free agency a whole lot more interesting. And potentially fruitful.

The grocery store would have added a several isles.

The owners absolutely have the upper hand. There is still a slight chance they work something out before March 5th though. Otherwise they have a year to get something done. I don't mind an uncapped year, I DO mind a lockout in 2011. I don't know what I would do with myself if there was no football in 2011.

    NFL vs American Needle.

IMO the NFL is waiting for this case to settled; it's currently at the Supreme Ct.

    Google for more info.

If we had a lockout in 2011 can you imagine what this place would be like. We'd either end up in a mass suicide or a Woodstock love fest. Not sure which would be worse, or scarier.

    Well away from here
I loaded right now, I mean "Weeeeeeee" loaded so I say **** the players, and management needs to dig in their heels and get some thing implemented. Rookie salary cap, the ability bench players ala Keyshon Johnson without paying them (which was changed) when they act up too much. The players don't run the league, but they have been given control.

I don't mind the owners taking things back and getting some control over the game. The economic climate is right for the move. No one wants to hear about athletes crying over their millions with rampant unemployment. No one will back the union, and the owners know it. What fans will say yeah that guy deserves to make 9 million over 7 million a year, yeah he needs that 30 million gauranteed money up front.

I'd like to see Mr. Smith sell that to the fan who knows his ticket prices go up to help pay those salaries, meanwhile 3 people he knows need jobs. Good luck. The owners have the union by the balls. The owners will lose money, but most have outside businesses, and the league took out over 2 Billion in loans to keep going, the players don't have that source of income.

It may be ****ty, but it benefits the owners now and later on. I don't expect anything other than a dog fight.

    **** I'm drunk right now.......weeeeee

Baseball, then the CFL then the UFL.

Imho, both sides have legitimate issues, imho the Owners really wish to reduce future salaries and put that money directly into their pockets.

Fans need contingency plans as well as the players and owners.

I agree to an extent, but Im also gonna doubt ticket prices drop once the owners get their way. I dont really think either group has fans in mind, which is sad.

    Why?

The other dirty little secret in all of this is, the Owners will not open their books to support their claims, they are surely whinning, they are offering nothing to support their crying.

What is worse, the thought that "the owners will spend that money signing Veterans" is a pipe dream.

Now if they had to fund a decent retirement fund with a percentage of the savings realized from a rookie cap, then sure, I'd been in favor of it.

we knew we would get to this
they are digging in on this one bro

They will spend.. just see the owners don't want to put out big dollars for guys sight unseen

    Rookie cap is their stance.

Players past and present should pool their monies and form their own league.

I hope the owners do lock out. I think these rookies are way outta line by being able to hold a gun to a owners head and demand so much money (Jamarcus Russell, Michael Crabtree and so on...). There should be a rookie cap.
I make a little less than 6 million a year  and I am responsible for my own retirement and insurance, with out a college education. These guys are making millions hand over fist and are to stupid to put a little money to the side for retirement or career ending injury. They should be responsible for their own benefits. If a rookie gets a career ending injury during his rookie contract then he should get paid. Take care of him throw a few million his way and good luck. These guys are way too babied if you ask me.

With the rules as they have been since 1993, everyone, players and owners, have made lots of money. I dont see how either side has any room to complain.

Both the NFL and the NBA are demonstrating that they are planning to crush their respective unions, its as simple as that.

I'm 100% with the players. Player salaries aren't what drives up ticket prices. The free market does. You think the owners wouldn't raise ticket prices if the market would support it? Puh-leeze!

Oh, and the current NFL players are FOR a rookie cap. The vets want the money going to them, not some rookie.

The owners are greedy. Its just that simple. The problem is that the owners are so greedy, they fight amongst themselves. Jerry Jones can't understand that his Cowboys need to play other teams in order to make money. There must be revenue sharing in order to have a workable league.

The owners don't disclose all the income and nothing is taken into account when the actual value of the franchise goes up.
