How dare you speak of "The Godfather" with a lashing tongue???

I love me some Gil Brandt. The guy knows his stuff. It's funny listening to him on NFL Sirius because he always seems to end his sentences with, "and that's what that is" or "that's what it, it amounts to". He's a cool dude. I could listen to Brandt all day.

Is that any indication that the Dolphins are satisfied or should be satisfied with their middle linebackers play? We need a good pass rushing outside linebacker but we also need a good talented middle linebacker who can play all over the field and have an impact on the field but thats JMO.

I agree. Our inside backers are awful. If they don't address it in the draft, I hope it is because they brought in Dansby.

I think that would be more indication that they think they can pick up someone to complement Crowder in the 2nd round, and we'll run those two next year. I'm guessing they've seen some good depth at the position, versus WR and OLB. I think it's likely that they'll go with either or in the 1st round, and won't address the other till a later round for a project/gem pick.

I just hope they target Dansby because I think he would be a difference maker, unlike Wilson did last year.

I love me some Brandt as well, but they need to turn his mic up when he is on Sirius 124. I usualy have to turn up the volume when he talks and then turn it down when Wilcots or whoever he is with talks. I hope Gil knows that Bill will get "his guy" Dansby in Miami come March 5th therefore he would be correct in saying that our biggest needs in the draft are WR and OLB.

It's an indication that ILB is not a core position and that WR and OLB are. So they shouldn't be satisfied with their ILBs, but it also doesn't mean they should get one at #12.

"You know that player used to sell ice cream to make extra money so he could pay for his books while he red shirted as a freshman, and look at him now ....is what it amounts to" Gil Brandt is a walking history of Football. His mind amazes me! The guy can tell you everything!

    Gil?

That is vintage Gil Brandt right there. He can talk about a small town in Montana and opine on the best eats; and yet, bring it back into his original story about a particular player.

I remember last year, he was interviewing Knowshon Moreno and he brought up Knowshon speeding on a back-road in Alabama when he was a teenager. Knowshon was totally taken-aback. He was like "Where'd you get that information???".

    Gil is the man.

If you can add Karlos Dansby in free agency and say, Everson Griffen, in the draft then your LB corp doesn't look as bad.

WLB - Avril perhaps? / Wake / maybe even JT brought back.
    ILB - Crowder
    ILB - Dansby
    SLB - Griffen

That is a good point there Rafael. Even though experts are focusing on the OLB's that the Dolphins should draft, I believe that the Front Office will draft or sign some good ILB's to strengthen the unit. You right, the Dolphins shouldn't be satisfied with what they have at LB, they should always be on the lookout for opportunies to strengthen the defense. Good post.

If we get Dansby, I want to go OLB in the first.

No Dansby, ILB in the first.

    I want Dansby though.

I see us taking one of the best players left after the first 11 teams have picked. :knucks:

eh, parcells probably told brandt to say that so noone would trade up ahead of the dolphins to draft mcclain lol. i agree on the OLB though. I think he would have to be a pass rusher extradinaire so I think that leaves out Derrick Morgan. i think if we go OLB it will be Hughes, Graham or Hardy which will cause everyone to complain that we reached but to me those are the guys that we will target

Not to mention he had that ridiculous idea that we were going to pick Ted Ginn over the person that was a given we would draft, Brady Quinn. Come to think of it, maybe that wasn't so ridiculous ... never mind!

Actually, it is for many if not most on this site who keep talking about McClain being the pick at #12. I agree that it should be obvious though. It's just that many here don't seem to understand the concept of core positions.

doubt it, probably more to do with value. The only ILB that is going to be considered at 12 is McClain and some of the holes in his game are starting to come to light. I'd much rather have Earl Thomas or Graham at 12 then McClain.

BTW, as much as CC and AA suck donkey pecker, they are better then the OLB we currently have on the roster.

Iam so over our linebacking situation is not funny...

I think we should set the world record for drafting linebackers...

all I want is 1 receiver and 1 tight end...

Give me D thompson and Gronkowski ,and call the guiness book.

I am all for drafting Dez Bryant with our first pick but he will most likly be gone so unless another WR sky rockets up the draft boards a OLB it will be

Yeah bro, I've been saying that could be the surprise or dark horse pick or whatever for awhile now. I'm just saying that someone predicting that we are going to go WR or LB isn't really going out on a limb, nor is it any surprise. Just about 95% of us have been saying that as well.

I'm more referring to him just saying WR and LB, not necessarily OLB. I know you think we could maybe use some upgrades at OLB, but that ILB is more important. That's a reasonable thought and I totally understand and I also agree that we need some serious upgrades at that position, but anyone could see that OLB/pass-rusher is a very, very glaring need as well. I think we need both. We could go either way, IMO and it would probably be a smart decision. You know I would love to take B. Graham, but there's a number of ways we could go that would probably make me happy. I was a bit surprised when they called V. Davis' name last year, but I'm happy with the pick, so.....

ILB is a huge need but the position itself doesn't carry as much value nor have as much impact. If you read Mayock's quote, he flat out says that OLB is more important in our defense. If you read Ireland's quote about what core positions are, he lists WRs and pressure players as core positions but does not mention ILB. What you're hearing from Brandt here is obvious, we will most likely take a player at a core position of need.

What I am saying is hardly revolutionary. This something that most GMs know and follow. But it is not as obvious to most fans. They take the simplistic approach and assume that all positions have equal impact (outside of the extremely obvious like K and P). GMs and people who study the game in depth go a little deeper. They all have their opinions about which positions have the most impact and require the highest resources to get. I've heard and seen a few variances in those opinions but I've never hear ILB listed as a core position in a 3-4 defense.

The GMs will strive to fill those core positions first unless the non-core prospect is truly elite. When it comes to McClain, it should be obvious by now that he isn't in that elite Willis class. So IMO it's very unlikely that McClain or any ILB is their top choice. My guess is that they will go WR (Bryant is the only WR prospect worth the #12 selection), OLB, or NT b/c those are the core positions of greatest need.

Hardy supposedly has major issues. I'd be surprised if anyone touched him in the first round, much less reached for him.

i agree with ya here. Porter will be gone, JT could very well be gone, leaving Wake/Moses/Anderson. Even with JT i don't think we can go into the season with this group, i know everyone has high hopes for Wake, so do i, but JT is our only proven starter and he proved last season he should prolly be a more situational player at this point in his career. i like Moses and Anderson but they would really have to step it up, i mean major improvements. so i think we MUST get another olb. At ilb we have Crowder/Ayodele/Torbor/Walden/Folsom, at least we currently have our starters from last season on the roster, yes it would be good to upgrade, but we have some bodies. at nose we have soliai, maybe ferg returns, maybe not, i could not fault picking a NT at 12 if the trifecta believe the talent is there.

fun time of year, be interesting to see what happens with FA.
