Triumvirate - (in ancient Rome) a group of three men holding power, in particular (the First Triumvirate) the unofficial coalition of Julius Caesar, Pompey, and Crassus in 60 BC and (the Second Triumvirate) a coalition formed by Antony, Lepidus, and Octavian in 43 BC.

Trifecta - a bet in which the person betting forecasts the first three finishers in a race in the correct order.

Just a little pet peeve of mine. :smartass:

This is from Omar's blog in the Sun-Sentinel today.

    http://blogs.sun-sentinel.com/sport...nsweblog+(Miami+Dolphins+|+Sun-Sentinel+Blogs)

Literally translated here is what he wrote.

This is from a Q&A with Mike Berardino.

    http://articles.sun-sentinel.com/20...skharvey_1_anquan-boldin-joey-porter-dolphins

    Literal translation.

These are paid journalists. They are not the only ones who do it either. Armando Salgurero refers to Parcells, Ireland, and Sparano as the "trifecta." So does Edgar Thompson, Ethan Skolnick, and Dave Hyde. As a result our message boards are filled with ignorance.

    eh..
    splitting hairs..
The wonder of the English language is that some words carry more than one definition. For instance: notice #2

    tri·fec·ta [ trī féktə ] (plural tri·fec·tas)

    noun
    Definition:

    1. North America bet on first 3 in race: a bet, especially on a horserace, that involves selecting the competitors that will come in the first three places in the correct order

    2. set of three: a series or set of three things, factors, or influences
    a trifecta of political losers

[Late 20th century. Blend of tri- + perfecta]
    http://encarta.msn.com/encnet/features/dictionary/DictionaryResults.aspx?refid=1861721853
I do believe it's appropriate to say that Parcells, Ireland and Sparano would fall into the second category. But not the first.

The second definition usually refers to an accomplishment not people. For example you might say an entertainer achieved a show-business trifecta with a platinum record, hit TV series, and an Oscar.

Its just a pet peeve. Every time I read the word "trifecta" I think of a horseracing bet. I must see the word anywhere from 10 to 100 times a day on Dolphins message boards. It gets annoying after a while.

Even if you stretch the meaning of the word Parcells, Ireland, and Sparano are not a trifecta. On the other hand there is no other definition for triumvirate. It more accurately describes them. Plus I don't get the urge to place I bet when I read "triumvirate."

    Oh but they are!

I think Dolphin fans can agree that those three men heavily influence this franchise. We've all heard the term "The Parcells Effect" in the past. We heard it a whole bunch the first offseason he was here.

To me, the definition above describes it to a 'T'! :)

In the end, I think you're probably going to have to live with it. Like I had to live with basketball announcers religiously informing me that "there's an [X]-second difference between the game and shot clock" at the end of every ****ing quarter, despite each being prominently shown and labeled at the bottom of the screen. You could always do like me and just stop watching the sport altogether. But I wouldn't advise that.

Trifecta is easier, more fun. Rolls off the tongue. But that's just me. :)

Yet the example given was "a trifecta of political losers". Which, I would think indicate 3 people.
Nonetheless, I can relate to what you're saying in general.
I feel that way when I see "very unique" or "somewhat unique". Something unique stands alone. It can't be somewhat or sort of. And it doesn't need to be very. It either is or isn't.

Trifectas are what Parcells bets at Saratoga!

I hear ya' though. I used to use the term "triad" until I found out that word can also refer to underground criminal societies in China and its neighboring countries.

If you google "trifecta" at least half the references are to horseracing. I cannot get it out of my head. :hammer: However you are right. It is something I will have to live with until Parcells leaves. Then we will have to come up with a new name for Ireland and Sparano.

Very true. Its just not commonly used to describe people. The most common uses are as a bet or as an achievement. Or as Parcells, Ireland, and Sparano when you are on a Dolphins message board.

That is a good one.

We all have our pet peeves. Personally referring to our top 3 guys as the Trifecta never bothered me. I do prefer Troika since it means same as Triumvirate and is shorter and easier to spell and type. :wink2:

My pet peeve is Dolphins fans misspelling names of our past or current players. Such as spelling Csonka as Czonka. Or spelling Zach's name as Zack.

Except that we all know that the three do NOT possess the power, only the Tuna does. At any rate, IMO, Ireland and Sparano have earned the right to get the credit at this point. The Tuna will be gone after the draft (again, mho). I vowed to stop using either signature for the group after last offseason. They've proven enough to be considered the GM and coach and not just puppets for The Tuna....

Dude, you're over-intellectualizing this whole thing. This is a pro football team board. It's all about having fun. "Trifecta" is fun. It reminds us of getting sh×tfaced with our buddies as we watch the ponies go round and round, or same thing at Jai-Alai. "Triumvirate" is not fun. It reminds us of sitting in Latin class bored to tears while Brother Adolf made us recite declensions and conjugations day in and day out in a dead language. We're not Romans, dude. All of the people you're talking about ended up dead. Trifecta it is.
