Everyone greeting this thing with skepticism should check out Apple's introductory video. Might change some minds, or at least give you a clear idea of why it exists. Jobs' presentation wasn't quite up to his normal standards, to put it charitably.

There's definitely a reason why the iPad exists. That reason is just more niche than usual.

I see everyone's point of view in it's uselessness. I just know Apple well enough to realize they're not idiots. They have a market. Obviously you guys who want to use your laptops are not that market LOL

I have a Macbook Pro and an iPhone. I am definitely getting one of these. Maybe not 1st gen, but I am all over it.

So what the hell can this thing do? If it doesn't have flash, then that renders half of the internet useless.

I'd agree with the view that it's useless if Apple hadn't demonstrated the ability to run "deluxe" apps on the thing. Apps like iWork constitute the difference between an oversized iPod Touch and a genuine "third column" device.

There are stories about how medical conferences have been adopting iPod Touches for purposes of distributing literature and taking notes. Something like the iPad would clearly supplant that. Hell, the docs would go back to their professions and use the iPad on a patient-to-patient basis with the correct app, and that wouldn't really be possible with an iPod Touch or iPhone.

There's definitely a place for this thing. It's a netbook replacement, especially once the third-party apps mature.

Eh, more like 5%. And that 5% isn't that interesting in the first place.

Youtube has its own app on the iPhone OS, and sites are generally transitioning to HTML5/H.264 thanks to the rise of MIDs.

I can honestly say I haven't missed Flash at all when browsing with my iPhone.

    A few problems -

Kindle uses the electrophoretic display which leads to far less eyestrain than reading off a computer display.

Kindle has ten times the battery life.

The pricing for Kindle is also well below the lead rate for the IPad. ($259 vs $499)

I'm sure that some people will use this to read but I don't see it killing Kindle.

This could kill the Kindle DX which is larger and is $489.

The way I see it, your average mom, dad, or student uses their laptop for very few things. These things include:

    - email
    - web browsing
    - youtube
    - thephins.com
    - fanhell.com
    - pictures and albums
    - facebook (i know this is web browsing too, but it's a whole other phenom)
    - MP3 management

That's it. Most people don't use it for regular TV or Movie watching. Why? Because it's very complicated to find videos, movies, TV shows, and other media and go through the hassle of finding codecs, using a specific program to download it, manipulate it, then run it.

THIS DOES THAT STUFF! AND IT DOES IT SO ANYONE CAN DO IT WITH THEIR FREAKING FINGERS!

It's the simplicity that will make this thing a killer. Once it's cracked, then the real geeks will love it. Like the iPhone and Macbooks, I'm sure it'll run on a hacked up version of Linux. Once that's been tapped into this thing will REALLY fly.

Will you need to hold it while you watch the movie? With a netbook or laptop you can keep it on your lap or a table.

I can't see holding the Ipad for two hours at just the right angle to watch the movie.

    Dock it. Problem solved.

And the thing has an IPS panel, so viewing angles aren't really a legitimate complaint.

Exactly. Tech pundits miss this point: the average person checks their email, looks at their Facebook account, maybe pokes around a couple of favorite sites, and then shuts the computer off to go watch American Idol. Operating systems are fairly advanced these days, but they do too much in too complex a manner for the average user.

Apple's going to sell millions of these things... and that full iTunes connectivity is going to bring the money in years after the fact.

    Not complaining, just asking.

So, to view it for long periods of time you will need to carry your dock with you and place the Ipad in the dock on a hard surface.

Lots of people use their laptops on their laps, or on the couch, or in bed. This will not be as flexible as a laptop or netbook in that regard.

Not really. Let's be honest, most people don't walk around carrying their laptops in front of them. It's not practical. A tablet supplants that.

You're trying to shoehorn the tablet into a task it's not meant for. Yeah, it can play movies, but no, you're not going to spend all day going around with the thing on your lap doing just that.

If you want that, get a notebook. That's what they're there for, to provide a portable terminal. A tablet is a handheld computer. It is meant for literal on the go tasks, whereas a notebook these days is more of a compact desktop computer. It's become a desktop replacement, especially with the rise of 17'' models.

He said most people don't watch movies on their computers, but that they might be more willing to do so with the iPad, presumably thanks to the iTunes connectivity and the form factor. However, he said nothing about whether or not people would watch movies on their iPad while on the go. You introduced that concept in your reply.

For the record, yes, I think people would be willing to dock their iPad and watch a movie or TV show on it. I think they'd be less willing to do that while, say, sitting at an airport terminal.

    Exactly my point.

I don't see movie or TV watching as a big deal for the IPad.

If you are going to watch on the go you will likely continue to use your laptop.

If you are going to watch at home I would think that you would be more likely to watch on a big screen rather than on a small screen in a dock.

I'm still curious as to how people are going to make this on-the-go. Is apple going to come out with a special fanny pack or back pack line...maybe an elastic armband with velcro and you can carry it while jogging?

Again, notebooks have evolved into more of a desktop replacement than a true portable computing solution. That's why people are buying iPod Touches and smartphones, and why tablets are on the rise; because there's a desire for increased portability that isn't being delivered by increasingly-bulky notebooks.

In a way, the iPad is a revisitation of the MacBook Air.

As for watching movies on big screens, I agree, but people do actually rent/buy video content from iTunes, and the flop of the Apple TV has shown that people aren't willing to transfer their iTunes content from their computers to their TVs.

    Some more on watching movies

"Watching a movie on the new iPad will not as pleasurable experience as you might think. The screen being 1024x768 pixels is in a 4:3 ratio which is the exactly the same as an old CRT television set. Many of us are have gone on from there and are luxuriating in the glory of our 16x9 aspect HDTVs.

It turns out that 16x9 will give you big honking black bars at the top and bottom of your screen as you can see by the green bar in the image above, and anything above or below it will be displayed as black bars.

It gets worse, lots worse. Let's say you're playing a regular, non-widescreen movie which has an aspect ratio of 1.85:1. In that case anything above or below the blue area will be black bars.

Now we get to ribbon-vision. Most widescreen films, from Star Wars to the new Star Trek were filmed in 2:35:1. This and all other resolutions mentioned refer to how wide the screen is as compared to how high. So these films are 2:35 times wider than they are high, and result in a mere ribbon on the iPad screen. Without measuring, it seems to me that a full half of the screen in landscape mode will be filled with black bars.

One last kick in the pants. Having a resolution of 1024x768 pixels there is no way that you can display the gold standard of today's high-definition of 1080p. There just aren't enough pixels.

So iBooks make sense, but movie watching will be somewhat limited. People frequently say that they really can't watch movies on an iPhone or iPod touch, since the resulting display is so small. The iPad will absolutely be better, but still at a trade-off."

i think you're taking the term portable waaaay out of context. A 17" laptop is portable. Nobody jogs with it.

In your average brief case, laptop bag, or book bag, this thing will be WAAAAAAY easier to tug around for normal everydat computer use than a laptop. Again, i have a 13" macbook pro and i think i'd use this more for everyday stuff than that.

I agree, I wouldn't want AAPL in my portfolio at this point. Just saying, it's damn expensive for little gain. I think they've just about topped out.

But if you bought AAPL back when Steve Jobs returned, you're sitting pretty right now.

A big *** iPhone that can't make calls. Pass, I'll be toying with my new Nexus One with my iPhone 3GS (along with all of Apple's kindergarten restrictions) collecting dust until the iPhone 4G comes out, hopefully with flash, a better camera, and some other crazy stuff.

This is one big piece of eye candy. It'll be cute at first, but that's all.

Lol @ 1GHZ... The same as what every Android phone is coming stock with in 2010. I seriously don't see the point with this thing... maybe if you're on Metro or Boost or something and you don't have a smart phone, but if you do have a smart phone, then this is a pretty useless (and extremely overpriced as usual with Apple) product. What's the upgrade, we can now watch Youtube videos in HD? Ground breaking.

If you already have an iPhone, iPod, and Macbook or Macbook Pro (which is the main community targeted) then what's the use for this?

AT&T floats apple butt loads of money to keep it in their network. I think AT&T might have sunk by now had it not been for the iPhone. The service is ok at best and the internet is embarrassing when compared to what I used to get on Sprint. But in the end, the phone is what ruled the day. And I wanted an iPhone.

I never said they wouldn't sell. I'm not that naive. It doesn't mean that this device is so amazing, or that it's so much more useful than similarly priced devices that it should be outselling them so much though (I know it will outsell them).

Am I one of the few people who have no issues whatsoever with AT&T? I've had maybe 10 dropped calls over the 1.5 years of my iPhone contract. Never had voicemail issues. Never had connection issues. I can pick up a good 3G signal wherever I go, except into the bowels of a large store like a Wal-Mart or Home Depot.

The only time I can remember when I couldn't get some sort of AT&T signal was driving the Turnpike south of Orlando, and across most of I-10 between Tallahassee and Jacksonville. But I don't think any other provider offers a good signal along those areas either. (You'd think highways would be some of the most well-covered cell phone sites in the country, but hey.)

    Edit: Aww, poor Adobe.

Note to Adobe: make Flash not suck and Apple will consider putting it on their devices... presuming HTML5 and H.264 haven't killed your golden goose by then. And while you're at it, how about making a version of Flash that doesn't spike CPU temps and use on OS X?

(No, Flash 10.1 is not a solution, it's merely a step in the right direction.)

This device suits my needs & I will be using it as Apple has advertised. I'm still deciding if I want the 3G model but the best part of it is the no contract & I can get it when I need it. No iSight & media card reader is a bummer but hopefully there will be some accessories that alleviates the no media card reader. When I think about it more. Could Apple of added those functions in the current .5" thick form factor? Maybe or maybe not but not a big deal to me. This devices is the all in one, in between my MBP & i7 desktop but bigger than my iPhone device I have been looking for.

I'm such a gadget person that I'm willing to buy now & enjoy it until a better model/revision comes out. Since Apple products have a good re-sale value, I could always re-sale later.

I see it as a netbook replacement that will be more practical for the majority of netbook users. I'm not sure how it will do against the Kindle though. The two advantages of the Kindle are battery life and non-backlit display.

Whether, its a netbook replacement or not is to be seen. I'm hoping future tablet maker see's what Apple did here & try to make something like it. I always hated the flip & turn around on the current tablets. I prefer a one piece form factor like how the iPad is now. That is a tablet to me.

I think it will be either good or bad for the Kindle. It forces Amazon to step up. Competition is always good for us, the consumers.

That could be said the same for the iPad over the Kindle DX: movie's, email, photo's, music, surfing the web, etc...
