Of course, Mike Leach does make a good point:
I've observed that the teaching of QBs in the pros has been atrocious to the point of near-non-existence in the last 10-12 years.

A good example: with the proliferation of taller, stronger Receivers and monstrously large TEs, you would think that teams would be using that advantage; but when was the last time you saw a perfectly-thrown fade pass to a corner of the end zone? And how many did you see last season?

No, instead of using the height advantage, QBs seem to have gotten lazier about throwing into the end zone; they'll try to power it in most often, or improperly throw the fade either too late or too short, or - most often - too low, with not-enough arc, and with poor placement.

I do see the point with guys like Tebow, though; the guy has been so set in his ways for so long that you have to wonder if he can even make a transition as radical as working under Center, after working from the shotgun all of his life. The mental aspect of it more than anything.

Peyton Manning throws the fade as well as anyone in the history of the NFL. That TD pass to Garcon on Sunday was a thing of beauty. But yes, for the most part, that pass is history.

I have a hard time believing Tebow can't learn to take a snap from center and drop back 3-5-7 steps. But I think that's the least of his problems (long, slow delivery, reading blitzes, etc).

Right, and Manning came out 12 years ago. He's an exceptional player who was well-coached in college and has grown into a guy who can make any throw.

There's no reason for the...fading of the fade pass, other than poor teaching at the pro level.

Yeah, I'm not sure how to even quantify it. I think now that the league has to evolved into a "passing league" teams put more emphasis on arm strength than ever before, maybe that's part of it, not sure.

You'd think that would be a staple of an NFL QB's repertoire though.

I hated it during Spurrier's days here in Gainesville.

It seemed like the only pass our QBs threw and the only route our WRs could run was the fade.

I never liked Spurrier, he would simply line up faster players and throw over the defense. At U Of Fla you can almost take your pick of HS recruits. And it seemed like a lot of college defensive backs were ex HS QB's etc.

Now that Spurrier is at USCarl and he does not have the same recruits, he is not the "same coach".
