You may want to watch the sugars and carb content of your protein shakes and PB as well. When I was doing low carb I avoided shakes, PB, and all breads. I love breads, so that was a struggle for me.

I used to eat so much chicken and tuna that I got to where I still hate the taste of both now. If I am doing chicken breasts, I filet them and pack ground or sliced up sausage into the pocket and fold them back and pin them with toothpicks and cook 'em to improve the flavor.

I need to get back to being more strict with my diet myself. I'm 44 now and have packed on 15 lbs of fat the past 2 years. Weighed 219 lbs this morning. Aging sucks. SMDH.

Well right now I have been limited because we were on the end of a two week stretch without a paycheck. We both got paid today, so I will be getting eggs, chicken, veggies, tuna, salads, spinach, hummus, greek yogurt etc

So I had to make do with a bare pantry, and did alright.

Yeah, and protein shakes and most powders are expensive. My son thinks he has to have all this expensive crap to workout and spends too much of his meager paycheck on protein bars and Muscle Milk shakes and powder. Eventually he'll figure out that while that stuff helps a little, that it's a lifestyle change, not a couple meal changes that get it done. Are you doing low carb, or caveman?

Is your wife doing it with you? Having her onboard will help you immensely. Also take pics of yourself every two weeks in a pair of shorts. A lot of time people give up because they aren't actually tracking their progress correctly. I was looking at pics of myself from 5 years ago and I have lost a lot. It's a constant battle. Good thing for you is that you're still in your 20's. You'd be f***ked if you were my age and just trying to start out.

Yea my wife is on board, which DOES help. I am not doing any kind of low carb or anything. Just eating smaller portions, high protein....and eating right. Drinking water. Staying away from processed sugars and bull**** thats fake or sitting for months in a vending machine.

Cool... I try to eat heavier in the mornings, then gradually do smaller portions as the day goes on, which is a reverse for what most people do, but I feel better at night and am ravenous in the mornings. Congrats on the wife. Encourage her a lot as women seem to need more positive verbal feedback for motivation. Do the pics as well, it'll really help.

An old pic of me in a kilt.

Current pic wife took. Doesn't take long for our bodies to pack on fat, especially when you hit your 40s.

    :tongue2:

I definitely need to tighten up my diet and start focusing on staying more active. Too much time behind a desk or traveling now. Stay with it, Chris and don't give up.

Eating great all week. Today I had protein shake/protein bar/turkey sandwich yellow mustard/small chili/grilled chicken wrap (all every 2-3 hours spaced out) nothing but water with lemon.

You're using the protein shakes as a meal replacement? What's brand and type of protein mix and what are you mixing it with?

Seth that is such "bro-science". Please show some scientific evidence that "carbs after 7pm" are bad for you ? Last year I ate ice-cream every night an hour or so before bedtime, and lost 43 lbs in 30 weeks, dropped my bodyfat from 28% to 14% and my weight from 249 to 208 at the age of 53, all using IIFYM and dedicated exercise and very limited cardio (2 LISS and 2 HIIT sessions a week).

Chris you can eat carbs any time of the day you wish, it's all about eating at a caloric deficit and being consistent with your exercise. I suggest you investigate "if it fits your macros" aka IIFYM or Flexible dieting. Find out what your maintenance calories are, then drop 200 cals from that daily and do a 35% carb - 30% fat - 35% protein diet. Flexible dieting lets you continue to eat those things that you like and need and helps you to avoid "binge eating" because you won't have cravings.

Bro science? Did a shoddy article by Mr Bro Science (Bio-Layne) convince you otherwise?

There is no conclusive evidence on anything in the nutrition industry. Just tons of speculation and short sighted study groups refuting eachother.

From dozens of articles from magazines like Flex and Men's Health through their research has shown that when sleeping, the body first works to burn off carbs. It doesn't start to burn away fat, until that exhaustive process is over. So if your carb intake for the day is completed for hours prior to sleep...well...

And if actual dairy is a main ingredient in your ice cream, the protein to carb ratio should be decent.

No need to have mens fitness battles on here, whatever works for people works.

All I know is I have a protein shake or eggs for breakfast. A bar or veggies around 1030, lunch is chicken and veggies or rice at 1230-1, then some peanuts or almonds around 3, dinner is a protein, veggie and starch......then i work out 5-6 days a week, cut beer from 4 times a week, to 1-2, and its working.

I do not listen to Layne Norton, as I am not a believer in his "natty" claims. I followed what I saw from a number of others and I was skeptical at the 1st too. But it works. Eating chicken & broccoli 6 times a day is just asinine, but if that's what you wanna do, go for it. I'll stick to eating my occasional pop-tart and still get healthy and lean.

Chris try using a free program to track your caloric intake...... http://www.myfitnesspal.com/ it has a database with every imaginable food in it, and if its not there you can add it to the database yourself.

It's not asinine depending on your goals. I would split chicken with fish though.

Most diet programs, at minimum, will have a placebo effect and work to some extent. Most probably work well, especially if it is new to your system.

Everything in fitness and nutrition can be argued.

Last october, I had some blood pressure issues that made me change some things up. First was my diet. Cut out the obvious...burgers and pizza and the sausage egg and cheese biscuits in the morning. I stay away from all fried food, sugars and the salty stuff. I wasnt so much that I wanted to loose weight, I just wanted to be healthier. I also started to use supplements to help with the heart stuff. First thing I found was the Linus pauling therapy http://www.paulingtherapy.com/. Basically you take a bunch of vitamin C, lysine and proline and supposedly, thats supposed to reverse heart disease. It also will get your bowells going to with the amount of C you take. I also started supplementing L-carnitine. It too is supposed to be good for your heart...it also helps trim fat from your belly. Also, CLA is good for flushing out some of the fat you take in from your diet. Its good for Lowering your LDL cholesterol, and also good for loosing weight. I also started taking artichoke supplements. It works like fiber and also gets your liver going and that kinda loosens up the bowels a little. Dandelion supplements works as a diuretic which is good for blood pressure, It also works a detoxifier which kinda cleans you out. I do other supplements as well, but from what Ive read, these may be what made me loose so much weight.
I lost around 40lbs in about 3 months!! I can cheat and say around 50lb because I saw 198lbs once after a big dinner and several beers, now in the morning Im seeing 150lbs.....Now I dont know if thats my diet, the supplements or the fact that Ive always had a pretty high metabolism or what. Its most likely a combination of them all. But the best thing about it, My blood work made a huge huge change for the better. Especially my cholesterol numbers. In 4 months my HDL went from 17 to 48, LDL from 200 to 70, triglycerides form 320 to 70, ad total cholesterol from 220 to 129. The docter who almost insisted I needed statins at one point was floored I got those numbers since I refused to take the statins. So take it for what its worth, I cant pinpoint exactly what did it, but Im sticking to this routine!

Actually really good. Down from 245 to 231 this morning. Working out 3-4 times a week. Coaching 3 times a week also, so I am out running around....eating better....drinking on weekends....trying not to drink during the week.....some weeks are better than others.

All in all....doing much better and still working. Got 50mins of yoga tonight, planning on a tuna over spinach with boiled eggs and veggies for dinner.

Workin hard. Pissing like 3 times every 30 mins with all the water I am drinking. Got a chicken breast and wheat couscous for lunch.

Still taking the stairs when I can instead of the elevator. Taking advantage of having strong working young legs....not everyone has that luxury. It's all about not being a little *****.

Cruise is in 86 days....plenty of time to get down to the low 200's.

    No, it's a scientific fact.

Not true. Only someone peddling bull**** in the fitness industry would suggest that. There are plenty of facts regarding nutrition. And there are plenty of "defacto" facts that have yet to proven otherwise. Science is ever evolving, not static dogma. It doesn't mean you throw the baby out with the bathwater. The real science of nutrition doesn't regularly change.

You're body is in a never ending cycle of burning fat and storing fat. So... who cares? In fact, there is some evidence to suggest that eating carbs late a night can be better for you. You're more insulin sensitive after physical activity of any kind (the more physical, the more sensitive). So eating carbs at night, after a regular day, it would stand to reason you're more insulin sensitive than say, the mourning.

Those magazine's are junk too, BTW. Peer reviewed scientific studies are the only form of acceptable science. Whether it's nutrition or astrophysics. Anything less is akin to tabloid journalism. You're basically getting your nutritional information from the national inquirer.

Got our gym membership back. Went 4/5 days this week. Going today. My wife and I both aren't happy where we are. Slacked a bit. Gained weight on the cruise. Then thanksgiving didn't help. So we are behind the 8ball a bit. However we know crying about it won't do anything. Just gotta work hard and get back to the grind

I'm not good at multi-quoting, so good luck:

There are no definitive legs to stand on in the argument whether carbs before bed are good or bad. Certainly not from the guy who can't even perform a squat correctly. There are a plethora of reasons not to take carbs before bed, an influx of energy hampering sleep being one that I can speak of from experience. Seems like the jury is still out on fat burning. I'd wager individual genetics and activities, and actions would be factors.

I agree. Science on certain levels, is always science. We have facts. But the debatable theories of diet and nutrition, especially blanketed arguments, that do not account for certain genetics and individual physiological reactions, it's all gray and uncertain. And that is 95% of the nutrition industry, from diet books to supplements.

Let's get one thing straight, I like Flex. I like bodybuilding as a sport, and it is pretty much the only way to follow the taboo sport. And so, when MusclePharm runs a 5 page add...yes, it is easy to roll your eyes at that "article" in sheep's clothing. But when their journalists write articles and in them, site studies and results from every university and clinic from Johns Hopkins to Cambridge... to compare that to the national inquirer is just elitist bullsh!t on your part.

I will admit, I was an ectomorph. Weight has never been an issue for me. I don't shy away from carbs, fats, much of anything. When I stop working out, the scale drops...not the other way around. So I am no expert in weight loss, but I have read what I have read. If I was trying to lose weight, or just drop to an extremely low level of body fat, I would not consume carbs near bed time for several reasons which have already been brought up.

I can remember posting stuff with Clark going back to the early days of this board (so thats a solid 5-6 years ago) talking about this stuff. I tend to agree with him that those magazines are junk. However I would disagree on one thing and that is that the body does burn carbs first whether asleep or awake then fats. The reason for this is because the body burns caloric intake a certain way. Carbs have 4 calories per gram so they get burnt first, followed by fats which have 9 calories per gram. The body burns in that order because of the calorie intake number. Why that is, I couldnt explain but I know it to be fact.

For anyone trying to lose weight and is new (or simply needs to get back in to this stuff...like me), this isnt a bad model to follow. Youll notice #5, never eat carbs before bed. That of course can depend on your metabolism but one day that can bite ya when your metabolism slows: http://www.muscleandfitness.com/nutrition/lose-fat/12-laws-fat-burning/slide/5

Check out this Article by Martin Berkhan. He links to all of the peer reviewed studies he discusses.

The problem with the whole eating of carbs before bed, is it completely violates the laws of physics. Specifically, the energy balance equation. If you eat 2000 calories in a day, but are burning 2500, you're in a deficit of 500 calories. How does your body balance the equation? Those 500 calories must be accounted for... Or else you die. Seriously. If the body can't balance the equation, it has no energy sources left available, you die. How could eating carbs before bed, interrupt this equation? In any scenario not involving death, the 500 calories will be accounted for regardless.

The problem with eating carbs before bed, is more an issue of eating in a caloric surplus. Most people don't count calories. At best, they estimate which is a big issue. Often times, when people snack, it's with someone tasty. More often than not, carbs. Candy, cakes, pies, etc... So carbs get blamed as the bad guy that puts on fat, rather than a caloric surplus as a result of someone not adhering to their diet.

"Don't eat carbs before bed" could be better summed up with, "don't eat food before bed that will put you in a caloric surplus." Truth is, a fatty snack and/or a protein snack will add weight every bit as fast as carbs if you're in a surplus.
