Of course this hits close to home, as I grew up 100 miles north of the Sandia Mountains. I would think a Dad would know what kind of animal it was if he jumped on its back I have seen Mountain Lions in the Jemez Mountains of New Mexico. No mistakeing them for sure. When something grabs your kid, your not thinking let me get this image of what it is, your eyes are on your child and every thought is saving him. It came out of the brush and most likely took a few seconds to be over. I can understand him not knowing, heck the guy is most likely in shock.
