The medical staff deserves more blame then Saban.

Then again given the way you're describing him, you probably should realize that he'd probably still be here if he got Brees.

I remember it differently, that Saban picked Culpepper over Brees......

Anyways, even if, Saban should have offered more moolah then to sign him.

I like the direction we are headed in....the Saints also have a very good WR corps and one helluva offensive coach.

    Im not bitter.

But we seem to be the tortise in this race. I just hope we get the same outcome. Seems to me I remember the Saints being just God awful a few years ago, and now they are in the SB and we are trying to "build for the future".

Well when the heck is the future to become NOW ? I know some here will think I am impatient, but just look around and see how other teams get better quicker, and we seem to be on a snails pace.

oh i bet they are. but really, who cares? It's not like we'd be in the super bowl right now if we had brees. Our defense sucks reguardless of whose at QB.

    This is not what happened.

Brees was very willing to come to Miami, but he wanted a relatively large contract that seemed somewhat exorbitant given that he was coming off a 360 degree rotator cuff injury. The man has 12 pins in his throwing shoulder, and the fact that he's throwing stronger passes now than he did before the surgery is just medically improbable.

Anyway, Brees wanted more money than we were willing to pay given not only the nature of his injury, but the fact that Daunte Culpepper's contract had less value than the contract Brees was insisting on. The medical staff refused to sign off on Brees' shoulder, and in the end Nick Saban was caught between trading a 2nd round pick for a QB who at the time was considered just as good if not better than Brees and paying him less money, and giving Brees a large contract with a dubious shoulder injury.

Saban claimed later that his gut was to sign Brees, but he went against it and traded for Culpepper. Whether or not this is a copout excuse is up to the individual to decide.

Regardless, the decision to acquire Brees or Culpepper is not nearly as clear as many now view it to be. Hindsight is 20/20.

By the way, the 2nd round pick that we sent to Minnesota was used on C Ryan Cook, who is now a backup OT. They didn't exactly get their value's worth either.

the nfl isnt an exact science. if it was, the lions would have made the playoffs by now. I mean seriously, they've been pretty bad for well over 10 years now.

some teams get lucky (Like Favre falling right into the vikings laps and solving their QB problem). Others just get that one guy and he does it all by himself (peyton) but most of the time you just have to hope your team keeps working and catch some breaks.

That sure, but I don't remember anyone feeling sorry for Miami after Hurricane Andrew, which was just as devastaing to south Miami-Dade as was Katrina to New Orleans, or have you forgotten ?

Of course I know you are right, its just I get a bit jealous this time each year, when I have seen almost every other franchise in the league get a chance at a ring over the last 25 years and we end in abysmal failure.

this time of year does suck most of the time. But remember, there are 30 other teams with fans going through the same thing right now.

No ring, no championship. Hell, the jets can't even say they're even AFC East Champs this year. How much does that suck?

Culpepper is getting ready for unrestricted free agency. His 2-year contract with Detroit is up.

He'll probably be brought in as veteran camp fodder for a rebuilding team.

This is true they kicked him out of the car running 60 miles an hour down the road and never looked back. Brees with Chargers current receiving Corp would be scary.

    Back in Miami
    Wasn't really Saban.

Was our Med Staff that decided they knew more than the most respected Ortho doc in the business who gave Brees the green light.

Was a big mistake no doubt but it's long gone now.
Just another huge mistake in a long list during our worst decade ever.

I'm pretty sure the Dolphins are not in the running for Daunte Culpepper.

Let's be fair, Saban was under no obligation to listen to the medical staff's advice. He had final say, not the docs.

No I'm just saying that Dante isn't done IMO

We rushed him back before he was ready, he then went to the black hole of Oakland where no-one succeeds. Now behind the #1 overall pick that Detroit HAD to play to satisfy their fan base.

I've worked in re-habbing work injuries for 15 years. The decision made by the medical staff would be the right one in 98 cases out of 100.

Given a choice between putting in a guy coming off a knee injury and a guy coming off a shoulder reconstruction I will take the guy coming off the knee injury every single time. Shoulder injuries are notorious for slow healing and incomplete healing and often require revisionary surgery.

None of it matters anyway. We didn't get him, Saint's did. End of story. Nothing in the world makes me think that this one thing is the reason Miami has not gone to the Superbowl the past several years. I have zero resentment towards Brees being a Saint or the decisions made in the past.

Please go back and re-read the actual history of the brees saga, and not what you hear pundits say.

Saban wanted Brees. Our medical staff wouldn't clear him. Saban wanted Brees so bad, he went around our medical staff and asked 3 independent medical groups their opinion. All said it was too risky.

Saban did not pass on him. He was prevented from signing him. This is well documented.

EDIT: I was wrong. Huizenga said it was 6 medical opinions.
