It didin't look bad. Hits like that (and alot, ALOT worse) happen in hockey all the time. From what i understand, it wasn't pro level. Im wondering if that guy had a preexisting condition.
No they don't He left the bench and without going for the puck he stuck out his elbow and knocked and out to the point of convulsion This happened in junior hockey in the Q
It's hard to tell thru that video whether or not he had his head down going thru the neutral zone. An elbow is uncalled for, but if you go thru the neutral zone with your head down you had better be prepared to get your clock cleaned. It's just how it works.
Most important, certainly hope this kids okay. Scares he bejeezues out of me anytime I see somebody convulsing like that. Second, my favorite saying in regards to Hockey: "I went to a fight the other night, and a hockey match broke out". Not to lesson the severity, but man, Hockey is just a flat out physical game.
Hits like that have alot of people wanting all the leagues to go to a less physical type of hockey like in the Olympics.
Yes they do? The only really "bad" thing is that he just left the bench. People go for player (vs going for the puck) and stick out elbows all the time. This was a bad hit, but nothing way unusual of any hockey level. He just happened to hit him in the throat. Im not making excuses for the guy, that is unacceptable. Simply pointing out that its not as bad as advertised.

What was so different with this hit, than from hundeds of others that happen in hockey all the time? The fact that he got him in to the throat. had he had him in any other part, or if the hit wouldn't of caused convultions, is it a dirty? Yes. Is it a hit that every freaks out over? No. I feel bad for the kid who get hit, and the guy who did it is a total jackass. That doesn't change the fact that there was nothing terrible about that hit, if he doesn't get up and start swingin at the guy. This is a whole separate subject. I don't think so, but it is a matter of opinion. Im sure both sides will have good points.
I can't say I watch much hockey or really know the rules, but the only differences I noticed in that hit other than the result was that he led with his elbow rather than his shoulder. IMO he went unnecessarily high but frankly it seems that most highlight hits are like that. It seems to my unaccustomed eye that if the kid hadn't been hurt that hit would have made many of those top 10 plays lists. What makes that hit so different?
Elbowing is a clear penalty. It's like a helmet-to-helmet shot on a defenseless receiver in football. Kennoy Kennedy delivered a knockout blow to Chris Chambers a few years back, but it was a dirty shot so you're not going to see it on any highlight reels. It was a dirty play with the intent to injure.
Yep. Infact, had the guy layed his shoulder into him instead, and not hit him in the head/neck area, there may not have even been a penalty called. (Although a hit as vicious as that almost always gets penalty and/or a game misconduct)
and the player hit did not have the puck or was near it and the player making the hit just came off his bench
