A Christian repudiates Pat Robertson

In the midst of the screaming headlines annoucing tradgedy after tradgedy in the poor island nation of Haiti there is one that astounds even a cynic like me.

Pat Robertson believes that Haiti has been cursed due to the Dutty Boukman treaty that sparked the Haitian Revolution and that is evidenced by the nation’s abject poverty.

In the days and weeks that followed 9/11 and other more recent incidents involving those who claim to be good Moslems, I have thought it important that Islamic clergy and leaders needed to step up and denounce their actions as not in accord with Islam.

In that same spirit, I therefore as one of the more visible Christians on this board renounce, repudiate, and condemn the comments of Pat Robertson and any who would back him. Taking a piece of Haitian mythology and using it to explain the deaths of tens of thousands transcends even Robertson's usual idiocy.

On behalf of Christians everywhere I apologize for his remarks being said in Chrst's name and pledge my support of relief efforts through bona fide Christian and secular aid agencies.

I sincerely wish, that all religions had leaders as rational and honest as you. You and my wife are constant reminders to this atheist, that not all people of faith are mindless zealots hellbent on condemning every one with different ideas and beliefs. How refreshing would it be if ones like you got the TV shows, instead of the pseudo-christians like Robertson?

It's no wonder we all love you so much. You are always the voice of truth and wisdom here.

I agree whole heartedly with you. It is people like him that cause the rest of us Christians to look like zealots etc.

I have never been able to listen to him without some sort of grimmace or questions on what he says. I don't know what Bible he reads, but in mine, God loves all people.

I don't have anything to send those poor people, but you can bet I'll be praying for them. And praying that people won't listen to the jibberish Robertson speaks in the name of Christians. Because, I as a Christian, am ashamed of him and his professing to being a Christian, then opening his mouth in the manner he does.

Thank you Pastor, your a true gift to us here.

FinD, as someone that is agnostic, leaning towards Atheism like you are, I find that most Christians and religious people of faith are like Ohio.. The problem is the that the most vocal ones tend to be self-centered nitwits that use their supposed faith to justify their cruel and despicable actions. Some of the meanest and most messed up people I know claim to be religious, yet to me they are nothing more than hypocrites like Mr Pat Robertson... Ohio and Deb are more of the norm.

Thank you Bum. Being put in the same sentence as the Pastor is an honor to me.

You're right, some of the meanest, most hurtful and hateful people profess to be doing things in God's name and this just messes it up for ones that are true Christian.

Then, when a real Christian speaks, others say "oh no, not another one of those." That's when I get upset. Everyone else says don't judge, but we get judged for what mostly the tv evangelists say. And not on what we really believe and stand for.

We all make mistakes, and do wrong to ourselves and others. The difference is to try to learn from your mistakes and not repeat them.

All are sinners and fall short. But, my goal is to keep growing, hanging on and pushing forward.

I wish I could type better what I feel. Just know I tried to get a point across that sounded good in my head.

I'm mixed on Pat Roberston's comments, I do think Hati has been abject poverty for hundreds of years primarily do to the country's culture and practices.

I also thought that there have been more than just Roberston, who is more a businessman than any sort of Christian leader, who have said some things that I thought was off the wall and in some ways, unChristian.

One of the reasons for the West's affluence has been a loose adherence to the ideals of faith/time oriented view, Hati is the exact opposite of that structure/culture.

Whether or not the earthquake was an act of supranatural chastisment is a matter of Faith, I also don't believe in kicking the already wounded.

I totally get what you say.. Like I said some of the kindest, morally sound and truly good people I have met are practicing Christians. The type of people that don't cheat on their spouses, respect other religions and have wholesome families and a smile on their face. In my case I can't bring myself to accept the concept of religion, but in no way would I ever look down upon the Christians I have met over the years.

My grandfather, who was a religious Jew, had strong faith and came from a very religious family. Yet he did not judge those that chose to take a different path, or people that didn't abide by his view when it came to religion. We can all debate issues, but the difference, IMHO, about people that are truly religious is that they can accept alternate views and respect them. To me the hypocrites are the ones telling me what to think, while rejecting anything and everything that doesn't fit within their world view.

    Very well said bum.
I try never to be critical of judgemental, but I have gotten upset when I am questioned in a rude manner about my faith. Or, for some one to tell me to "prove" there's a God. I usually try to just walk away. I don't feel the need to argue my faith or beliefs.
Your grandfather sounds like a good man. My mom was that way. Thank God I learned something from her.

Getting to this thread late as always.

Comments like the one made by Robertson set us Christians back for years and we are left reeling as a result.

I may not be a leader of a community like Pastor Keith but I would like to apologize as well as a visible Christian on this board.

If I've learned one thing it is this: "Love one another as I have loved you."

We need to build each other up instead of claiming superiority.

My late mom had a saying "The only one that was perfect was Jesus and they crucified Him."

Pat Roberstson has a lot of explaining to do when he gets to Heaven.
