Pete, I think I get what he means. Look at Round 1. He meets Gresham or best linebacker with a first round grade. JMO.
    Right dj?

That still wouldn't justify a 2nd rd pick of a LB or TE if none are available that are worthy of that pick. Same with returner/specialist in the 3rd. It just doesn't make sense to paint yourself into a pick like that just to get the position you want filled.

we've got to start out with at least an outline of a plan?

looking at the team as a whole, and where we lack the most talent, speed and athleticism?, Linebacking and receiver unit's are staring me in the face, we know that..So the plan allows me to infuse those 2 units with high level grade of talent, I can do that by taking this rough outline that has many variables, but I do include tight end in the receiver dept need.

The strategy is, four players with close to first round grade. I'am taking a more need approach to the draft this year. so i'am gonna keep the doubling up philosophy at 2 positions, instead of one, iam just gonna use free agency to solidify 2 spots, and my first two picks in the draft as the other in that plan, accumulating those four players, this allows 2 veteran players, that have first round grade, to come in and play right away..

I figure we target 2 fairly big free agent aquisitions at our 2 weakest units...let's say Boldin and Dansby...2 players, at the 2 biggest need positions...this after going thru the obvious steps.

    Qb position..check

Running back...pretty much a check considering I believe we will resign ronnie, and its a position i will not need to go after with my 2 prized free agents, or my first 2 picks in the draft.. Cj might be that variable that would take me out of this line of thought.

Oline...dont think this unit is weak in position strength enough, where i have to address it with my first 4 targeted picks in free agency and draft...maybe third round and later.

    Corner...no need here imo.

Receiver/tightend..I need 2 players with a high round grade, I get one of them thru free agency, and the other with my first two picks.

Dline...check..with some variables at nose, if solai gets the vote of confidence from our coaches, then check, don't need to go there with this particular offseason plan.

Safety..cannot count on eric berry falling to us, and its not close to the other 2 glaring needs, I would'nt use one of my two hi level free agents on the position, nor my first 2 picks in the draft...Looks as though we like clemons, so iam gonna look past that pos. with free agency, and not until at least the third round..

Hybrid linebacker/outside/inside.. 2 players needed with speed and athleticism that grade high, using one of my hi level free agents, and one of my 1st two picks.

Our team needs talent at these two positions, so I do bend the rules a bit when it comes to BPA regardless of position concept, and I do that because of how mush the two positions have distanced themselves from the other units.

Something that needs to be considered in this debate concerning what should be our priority in the off season, is Henne's development.

We'd like to see him take the next step in 2010 and we hold our breaths, hoping that he does. Well sending him into next season with the same targets, isn't giving him much support. Doing that will automatically limit his ceiling next year and by the end of the season, we still won't be able to accurately evaluate him.

There's good points being made by both sides of the argument.....I just think that when you consider the effect this will have on Henne's second season as a starter, how can we make anything else on the team a higher priority?

There's more at stake here than the wins and losses we may acquire next season. We just tied our wagon to a young, green player, playing the most important position on the team.

I just can't see how the problems at ILB, are more important than aiding Henne's development in what is going to be a crucial season for him.

    :knucks: whats up JS..

I think the 2 weaknesses are so evident, and so close in importance, that we need to take a symetical approach to acuiring the talent needed.

I think we can count on our regime to go after 2 pretty big free agents, and I know our first two picks are gonna be there, why not infuse the hell out of the 2 positions with serious talent with those 4 aquisitions, using "BPA at need position" approach.

Take this approach until a player that is so good, comes up and makes you change it.

i would never draft a wr to evaluate a young qb
    we all know the drill
going to be a big pissing contest between wr and lb this spring bro
if bryant slips it will be interesting
other than that we go D

I'd prefer to get a WR in FA, already developed and ready to contribute on day one.

If we do that, I have no problems focusing on defense in the draft.....if the right players are available, we can address both.

I agree, we do that and we have a good chance of satisfying those on both sides of this argument. I think a perfect scenario might be addressing WR in FA and concentrate on defense during the draft. And while I'm making wishes I'll take an upgrade at TE as well...;]

The more and more I read and pay attention to the positions which Ireland has strangely followed to a T in the first round, I think it's Dez Bryant if he's available. I'm almost sure of it.

Boldin isn't scheduled to be a free agent until 2011.

    1) takes two to three years to develop a WR @ the NFL level
Hartline has serious potential as a future PlayMaker
but we need a Boldin to upgrade the IceMan for 2010
(they will go after a second WR in the early draft rounds w/ BigPlay potential)
    2) ILB will be the #1 target in the draft & they will draft two
    hoping one produces immediate results,
a sure-thing & an almost sure-thing to fill the hole

another NT & an OffensiveGuard will somewhere in the blueprint figure in 2010
look for the Dolphins to snatch up McFadden if the opportunity presents itself

My dream off season would be to sign Marshall WR, Dansby ILB and Owens TE, then draft Berry FS and pick up an OLB that falls to the 2nd or 3rd.

If we fail to land the WR in FA and Berry, Bryant and maybe Spiller isn't available in the draft then we may have to settle for a smaller impact position like ILB in the first and try to get a WR or TE in the second. That may happen and it may be our best option in the end. But it would be a disappointment and our chances of challenging for a SB next year would be severely hampered.

The likelihood of being able to succeed by bucking the trend of the passing game is small, considerably smaller than going with it. So that has to be the priority assuming success is the goal.

If we acquire Boldin it will be by trade. There have been several rumors that he will be available for about a 2nd.
