I didn't put this in the questions forum because I wanted more opinions on it than answers.Plus I needed some quick responses. Hope noone minds. I want to switch or upgrade my web browser.I have an older version of IE. Is Firefox worth me changing over to or should I upgrade IE? how bout' any others like Google Chrome or Opera, although I didn't hear great things about them? I don't do anything special on the web so I don't have any special needs. Thanks for the help.
Google Chrome is fast but so basic. You literally can't do anything on it other than surf the web from what I've noticed when I used it. I use Mozilla Firefox and I have no issues. I use the Speed Dial add-on and it works out very well for me. I also think there's an option of it saving your previous sites that you were reading and visited. I've used Safari before and I liked it but I couldn't use all the shortcuts on the keyboard with it; i.e. control + B to make the bold tags. Also, I couldn't scroll down with the little button on the mouse, rather having to click the side bar. Opera I used once and don't recall anything from it. Hope that helps a little.
Opera's speed dial feature is great. Don't care for google chrome, absolutely no privacy with that one.
opera firefox k-meleon (little known browser but quick as lightning) i'd rival it up there with chrome. there's also lynx, lol, but that's pretty prehistoric. anything other than IE and you should be fine it's a matter of personal preference.
Lol, it's like this. You put your favorite sites in that you visit often and they will appear as soon as you open a new tab.
That's my problem.I don't think i have any preferences expect speed ,reliabilty, and security. I guess that's what everyone want's. My bad.
Opera also speeds up web page loading if you are dial up. If I were on dialup I'd probably use the Gapper's KMeleon, it is lite and really quick.
And another thing. If I do change over to say Firefox, should I keep IE for the hell of it? Or uninstall it?
Opera, Sea Monkey no longer a fan of Mozilla, used to use it all the time but now rarely do so. with speed dial, just hit the refresh icon and up to 9 pages update to the most current version of the website, which is handy as can be.
IE is like genetial herpes, it is there for life. The only way to remove it is to use WinXP lite and just never install it.
Not neccessarily, there are people who archive the updates and anyone can download them, or one can use Advanced Browser now Ace Browser. Handy thing to know if one were say...a experimental copy of XP pro..
Like many and not knowing any better, I used to use IE by default. But, a few years ago Firefox was recommended to me. So I started using it, and I've never looked back. It's a great browser, and it's supposed to have a lot more security built into it than IE. Plus, there's a ton of add-on's and customizable features. I highly recommend it. Never heard of Opera and K-Meleon, and never tried them (or Google's Chrome). So, I can't say whether Firefox is better or not. But, I just like Firefox, so I'll probably just stick with what I know works. Good luck 54Fins!
I am a Firefox user myself,it is faster and has better security in my opinion. Once I started using Firefox I never used IE again.Opera is alright also.
TY So far it's looking like Firefox and having to keep IE. I have heard alot in the past about FF being somewhat great compared to the others. I'm also the type of person that doesn't like change.(If it works, don't break it) Just that I'm getting an itch to do something new.Getting tired of the same ole stuff I guess...
If I go to FF,what should I do when IE(windows) wants to update? BRB watching the Manatee vs Plant (FLA) HSFB Championship in between.
No worries IE still looks for updates behind the scenes as long as Automatic Updates are turned on, it won't matter which Browser you use in that case.
Well,it's looking like Firefox for me. I'm going to give it a try.Now all i need is luck and I'm on my way! TY all for the responses. John (54Fins)
I use Firefox as well. It can get jumpy when you need an update, but it comes pretty soon after that starts. Much better than IE IMO.
Thanks for mentioning that Conuficus. I've been wondering why my computer has been acting funny. Been very herky-jerky of late. I think you helped point in me in the right direction in terms of why, as I have been putting off updating Firefox (i.e., running latest version) because I knew I wouldn't be able to use my current theme (Abstract Classic). But, after reading your post went ahead an updated it. Seems to be running more smoothly. I'll give up aesthetics for performance any day. BTW 54Fins, I should point out that Firefox offers a Miami Dolphins theme. Here's the link to it. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/46877 I'm not using it, but it looks pretty cool.
I had a chance to play around with FF,and I like it so far. One thing I can't figure out is; How do I get the web pages to come up in a separate window? Of should I say Tab? Seems I have to open a new tab manually instead of it just opening up automatically.
Right click on the page or link you want to open in a new tab. You should see the option to "open link in a new window" on the top, and "open link in a new tab" just under it. You can also customize your navigation toolbar to include a +tab icon, which will allow you to open a blank new tab page whenever you like. Hope that helps, and hope you enjoy using Firefox.
i use an add-on called "fire gestures" where i just right click on a page and drag the mouse up to open a new tab. sometimes if i'm feeling really lazy, i close tabs by making an "L" with the mouse.
Firefox; although IE8 has improved since IE7 and Chrome is overrated. Don't care for Opera at the moment.
Try them all is my best advice. I used the heck out Firefox until I got bored with it and I use Opera for Usenet, currently I find myself using IE8, it has improved considerably. Chrome is kind of weak but I use it for Google Wave. D
Firefox. I love the clean interface. It is the closest thing to Netscape Navigator you can get (considering Netscape used Firefox's code).
Firefox; although, if you use windows, microsoft does everything it can to sabotage it every way it can. You have to turn off user account control and windows defender or they gang up on FF and "crash" it repeatedly.
I'm starting to navigate much better now around FF. I think I'm getting addicted to add-ons to...... What are your favorite add-ons when it comes to security, adware, etc? Another thing I noticed is when I went to a video that was Windows Media Player it didn't want to play for some reason. That seemed odd to me. I have MP11.Do I have to add something to Mozilla for it to play?????
