Browns GM Phil Savage says he upped his offer to Derek Anderson in February because he feared Dallas would sign Anderson and trade him to Miami. Savage showed his true feelings about this draft by trading away every pick he had before the fourth round. Clearly, he wouldn't have been too thrilled about getting Dallas' first and third selections. The Dolphins couldn't have signed Anderson themselves without giving up the No. 1 overall choice. Doubtful...Anderson's signing bonus would have had to have been eaten by Dallas under that scenario...he wasn't going to sign with Dallas without a contract...
Wow, Savage's comments make me believe Jerry Jones and Ireland/Parcells have been talking about alot more things than we thought.
Yeah i'm thinking the same thing.... if the phins made that trade do you think Beck would have been traded?
Browns | Savage explains why he upped offer to D. Anderson Tue, 1 Apr 2008 21:22:54 -0700 Tony Grossi, of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, reports Cleveland Browns general manager Phil Savage said he upped the team's contract offer to QB Derek Anderson because he was afraid the Dallas Cowboys would sign him and trade him to the Miami Dolphins. Savage was afraid Dallas would sign Anderson to a big contract that included a "poison pill." The Cowboys would have given the Browns their first-round pick, No. 28 overall, and their third-round pick as compensation for signing the restricted free agent. The Cowboys would then have traded Anderson and their other first-round pick, No. 22 overall, to the Miami Dolphins for the No. 1 overall pick in the draft. As a result, the Browns raised their maximum offer from $22 million to $24 million when they signed him. http://www.kffl.com/hotw/nfl
I'm not any more sold on Anderson's ability than I am on Beck's. Anderson was in a very good situation last year. The Brown's OL played great and he fit into that system very well. I have my doubts he would have proven worth of the 1st and 3rd picks in an entirely new Miami system with so many question marks on the OL.
Anderson had a really good o-line last year, and has some absolute BEASTS at receiver, there's no wonder he went off last year...but, what QB wouldn't have?
I think this story would have more credence if it were Tunalands second offseason here. They have looked at tape and talked with these guys and have obviously seen enough for them to warrant being looked at in TC and beyond. If they were wavering at all about Beck, we'd have known it by now...They weren't talking to JJ about a trade and suddenly decided not to go forward with it...either they have some confidence in Beck or they don't...apparently they do..
