For the guys who own both systems I am pretty sure you are hard core gamers but for a casual gamer if you own a 360 is there much of an advantage to having a PS3 other then a few games I can not play? And how many games am I really missing out on playing?

I am considering buying a PS3 or a Wii to go along with my 360 and due to the Wii being sold out it seems if I want to get a new system it will have to be the PS3. So I was wanting some advice and guidance before I go and throw down 5 -600 dollars for the system and a couple games.

    Thanks guys!

Well I just got my ps3, and you are missing Warhawk, Motorstorm, and MLB 08 the Show. Those are games I have. And if you missed Ninja Gaiden on XBOX you can pick up Sigma on PS3. Plus the FFs, God of Wars, Socom, and MGS on PS3. Plus PS3 is the best and cheapest blu-ray player on the market.

I actually just got a Wii the other day, though I gave it to my girlfriend. It was only $200 at the local used game place by me. It was too good to pass up, especially since I had gift cards covering the entire cost from my PS3 purchase (using the sony card).

Well it depends. If you got a high def screen and your really into movies you'll want a PS3.
If you like playing with others in your living room (especially younger) then go Wii.

So even for a novice gamer there are enough games that are exclusive to PS3 that it would be worth while to get one? I will have to check out some of those games to see if they are what I like and think on it some more.

I have thought about doing this but my work had been so poor this past year that I just did not want to spend the extra money. But work has pick up and I have 2 really big jobs on the calender to get done and it looks like it is just going to keep on for a bit so I will have some extra cash to spend on myself and the family.

I have both, and I mainly use my PS3 to watch BR movies right now. There hasn't really been any game that has interested me, but I am looking for to MGS4,Gran Turismo and FF13 when it comes out, I'm sure there are some exculsives I'm missing. For games that launch on both systems, I'm more inclined to buy the game on the 360, maybe that will change with Home and new uprgade PS store, but for now I prefer XBLive.

Two other benefits of PS3 over Xbox 360 (though I've spent plenty of time with both, each having their merits):

    1. PS3's online service is cost-free to play with others online and to update content, while Xbox 360's online service is around $50.00 per year.

    2. PS3's are not "loud". This may just be me being picky, but there are sites and sites on the Internet dedicated to "quieting" your Xbox 360. Depending on the size of the room your home theater is in and the material/configuration of your entertainment center, the Xbox 360 is quite audible. Very confusing that Microsoft would not sound-dampen the dvd-rom drive on the system they would like everyone to build their entire home-entertainment experience around. Once the drive spins up upon starting a game, it is noticeable the entire time and forces me to turn up the sound volume to drown it out.

Nothing earth-shaking, but worth keeping in mind for those comparing the two.

XBox Live is also 50 times better than PS3's online service.

This is truly something I just don't get. I have the crappiest connection you could ever find well not that bad, but still (1mb down, 256 kb up) and I haven't had a single issue while playing online (no lag, disconnection, etc). I've played COD 4, Lost Planet, PES 2008 and that crappy F1 game that came with the console. I've never played in Xbox live but PSN is not bad at all IMO.

HMMM that is interesting that the PS3 is that much more quiet. My 360 is loud and I just figured that was something I was going to have to deal with. And that is something I would like.

I don't do any online gaming and did not have any desire to but I may do so if the service is free. That is one reason I never got into WOW. You pay so much for the game and then have to pay $XX a month to beable to play?? does not seem right IMO. Guess I am just a tight wad.

The 360 is definitely not loud enough for that to be considered a problem

Got the 360 shortly after the launch, and a PS3 in January of 2007.

My 360 has been in the closet since January of 2007, FYI.

I'm somewhat biased as I've been a Playstation guy since it's debut. However, it just runs more smooth to me. I don't know how to explain it, but it's just a more comfortable system for me. That along with the fact that I'm a Blu-Ray guy and the PS3 also upconverts regular DVD's. I mean, American Gangster (DVD) Upconverted with the PS3 gives it almost identical quality to the HD-DVD version -- shameful. Also, I played Resistance: Fall Of Man, Warhawk, NBA 2k7/2k8 and Call Of Duty online in my time, and I've never had an issue with Playstation Network. Makes me feel like the Xbox Live in which I previously owned (2006) was a complete waste of cash. You can purchase a PS3 game, or three Blu-Rays instead. :D

Besides, with the PS3, there's no need to worry about the red light of death.

    360 = short term.
    PS3 = longevity.

Nice post. I picked up my PS3 two weeks ago, and have played it pretty much non stop. My 360 has become an after thought with dust on it.

Thanks guys! the varying view points are very helpful:up: So you can play regular dvd off the PS3 as well as the BR? I know it sounds like a dumb question but I like to be 100% sure of what I am getting. Also am I to understand that BR is starting to pass HD as the preferred format of dvd's? I thought I had read that some where and that does kind of have me concerned.

LT both of my 360s are fairly loud and it does get on my nerves at times. I am pretty sensitive to outside noise, so a system that is silent or close to it is appealing to me.

I doubt the 360s will get put in the closet, there are a few 360 only games I play and one I can't wait till it gets released, Sacred2, or at least I think it will be 360 only I have not seen any previews for it on the PS3.

One other question. can you play all the PS2 games on the 3? Or is it limited to certain ones like the 360?

And please don't turn this into a 360 v. PS3 thing. I really just want helpful objective points of view. If you really prefer one to the other thats fine I would like to know, but please guys don't defend the other just because someone else has a different opinion then you.

HD DVD is officially dead. Blu-Ray won.

And that, more thna anything else, is what has convinced me to finally pony up and move on from my PS2 once we get our economic stimulus check. We're Netflix subscribers, and Netflix does Blue-Ray. :woot:

It depends on the size of the machine. I have a 40 which does not support PS2 games as far as I know. The 60's and the 80's do though. I could not find anything but the 40 anywhere except on Ebay, and I am leery about buying something like this on that site.

I currently own a 360, but I do intend to get a ps3. However, I've played on a ps3 quite a bit at my buddy's house. All I can say, when comparing the PSN to Live is that the PSN seems clunky. I don't like going to the Playstation store to look for stuff...I HATE using that stupid mouse pointer (maybe you can change that, I don't know). I don't like the XMB all that much...some of that, though, is because I don't use it all the time. The thing to do, though, if you're going to get a ps3, is to get the sonystyle credit card. With that card, you get a $100 off you first purchase of $299 or more. If you already have a ps2, then just buy the 40 GB ps3, and you'll spend $299 after the rebate. Not too shabby for a next gen gaming system/BluRay player.

Zoomie I had a whole thread on the other site.

I ended up getting a 80 GB PS3 (and 4 games), a Wii (and 2 games) for about $900.

PSN is being completely overhauled in 2 weeks so hopefully some of those issues will be fixed.

I agree with the Sony Card too. I already had a PS3 but I got the Sony Card anyway. I'm getting a HD Cam soon.

:hi5: I'm a huge fan. And now (provided your system can handle it), you have unlimited instant watching on the Internet for the rare times you don't have discs in the house.

Blockbuster does it too but I think they're slightly slower than Netflix. Their blu-ray selection is huge though. And they give you a coupon every month that you can use for a free game or movie rental.
