He is 22....he will develop secondary ones....

The 22-year-old Poreda was the White Sox's first-round draft pick in 2007. Poreda was 5-4 with a 2.38 ERA in 11 starts with Birmingham for CHW and has some real upside this year.

In 11 MLB innings over nine relief appearances, Poreda has allowed a run in only two innings. He has struck out 12 and walked six while posting a 1.64 ERA.

Just saying...he has touched 100mph so its a great #1 pitch...and he will develop off speed stuff....give him time.

Yeah, Will Carroll posted "Just got off phone re: Peavy. Told: "Best case? August 15, but that's pushing it. Really pushing it. Hasn't even started throwing for real."

Wow...MLB on Sirius XM show scott merkin just stated the Peavy deal was completed with 23 seconds remaining on deadline...

....@SI_JonHeyman #padres almost pulled off triple play (but) gonzo & bell for loney, martin, mcdonald, dewitt, dejesus fell apart

that would have been a great haul.

Well, on some oddball good news, "if" the Nationals fail to sign Stephen Strasbourg, and we finish with the second worst record in MLB, he will fall to us as a MLB draft rules prevent a team from drafting the same player twice when they fail to sign them.

Strasburg is an idiot IMO. I can't stand when guys refuse to play for the team that drafted them. I realize he's from California, but it's not like the Padres are on the cusp of winning. The Nats actually have a solid core, they only thing they are seriously lacking is starting pitching, which Strasburg could help fortify.

To me, I can understand wanting to receive the contract that he wants, but in this case 60 million is over the top.

That's my main beef as well. He's already been offered the biggest amateur contract in history. Take it and go play. Scott Boras is a douche and were he my agent, his *** would've been gone a long time ago.

JD Drew pulled the same thing and eventually got paid, an athlete has an expiration date on their careers, however 60 mil is everyday outfielder money for a proven veteran.

I wouldn't mind SD picking him, but our track record has been poor with the #1 overall, he looks like another Andy Benes.

Towers is first but likely not the last out the door

And when Towers' successor comes on board, more heads will roll in Baseball Operations – although Towers is the only move made thus far.
When asked yesterday if he is happy with the Padres' department of Scouting and Player Development, Moorad paused for a noticeable amount of time and replied: “No.”
Moorad said the Padres' strong focus on scouting and player development will be keys in selecting Towers' successor.
“We need to excel in the draft and player development,” said Moorad, who said the eighth general manager in Padres history is not someone currently in the organization.

PADRES: Club faces crucial decisions on roster

The Padres have until Nov. 20 to add minor leaguers to the 40-man roster or risk losing them in the Rule 5 draft.
Recall that the Padres acquired shortstop Everth Cabrera via the Rule 5 draft last year after the Colorado Rockies failed to protect him on the 40-man roster. In 2006, the Padres lost Joakim Soria to the Royals in the Rule 5 draft. He's now one of the best closers in baseball.
Padres officials will continue to meet over the next two weeks to clean up the roster. There will be announcements, like Thursday's, on obvious moves during that time.

PADRES ANALYSIS: New GM will have much working in his favor

-- The Padres have only $12 million in guaranteed money committed for 2010 after Towers unloaded Jake Peavy's $56 million contract
-- The pitching staff was completely overhauled through the trades of Peavy and Scott Hairston and several other minor deals
-- The 40-man roster is loaded with affordable, controllable talent.

SAN DIEGO ---- Jed Hoyer of the Boston Red Sox is considered one of the top names linked to the Padres' general manager opening, but he's keeping quiet.
Hoyer, Boston's assistant GM, said in an e-mail Thursday that he didn't want to talk about whether he has been interviewed by Padres CEO Jeff Moorad.
"As I have with every media member who has asked, I am going to decline comment," Hoyer said.
Red Sox CEO Larry Lucchino also declined to comment via e-mail on Thursday night on whether the Padres have sought permission to interview Hoyer. GM Theo Epstein didn't respond to a request for comment.

Well, Kevin Towers time was up in SD, but he did have the most successful run in team history, the Padres made the playoffs what..3 times? And 1 World Series with him at the helm.

but all of those failed draft picks have to mean something, too many ruined arms in guys under 25.

PADRES: Report: Padres close to hiring Hoyer as GM

Red Sox assistant GM appears to be choice to replace Towers
The Padres are reportedly close to hiring Jed Hoyer of the Boston Red Sox as their next general manager. Citing major league sources, ESPN.com reported Wednesday that the Padres are zeroing in on Hoyer, an assistant GM for the Red Sox. An industry source told the North County Times that Hoyer is the leading candidate, but that no hiring is imminent.

    PADRES: Farm system appears improved

Future of some in front office will be determined by new GM

Most of the Padres' upper-level talent played in the majors this season, except for Double-A third baseman Logan Forsythe, who began the year at Single-A Lake Elsinore. But several observers believe the Padres have impact talent and depth at their lower levels. Since the beginning of September, Baseball America has identified 12 Padres farmhands in its annual top 20 prospects for the California League, the Midwest League, the Northwest League and the Arizona League.
"They've got some good position players in the system," said one American League scout assigned to the Padres. "I don't think it's an amazing system, one where you say 'Man, watch out for the Padres.' But I think they've got a good crew. It's certainly not in shambles. They actually have a lot of guys that can be average everyday players."

Its a shame that Kim Ng appears to not get a fair shake. She is MORE than qualified to be a GM. I think people are hesitant because she is a girl. I wouldn't have a problem with her being the GM for my Dodgers if and when Colletti is fired.

Hm, I think the Dodgers ownership is going through a divorce, and McCourt just fired his Wife who was a CEO of somethng..looks to me like the Dodgers are going to be sold...again...CA Divorce laws are brutal.

As for Ng, other than novelty, what is her background in player development and acquisition? How many players has she successfully identified and promoted through the Dodgers farm system?

Serious question because I don't know the answer: how exactly is she more qualified? If her name was Ken Ng and she was a guy no one would care she didn't get the job. Maybe she bombed the interview or the Padres just thought Jed Hoyer was a better fit.

PADRES: Fuson fired, scouting director Gayton reassigned

VP Fuson fired, scouting director Gayton reassigned

SAN DIEGO ---- The Padres' player development system will have a radically different look at the top under new general manager Jed Hoyer. Team sources confirmed on Tuesday that Grady Fuson, the team's vice president of scouting and player development, was fired on Sunday, and scouting director Bill "Chief" Gayton was reassigned to an undetermined position.
In his introductory news conference Monday, Hoyer ---- the eighth GM in club history ---- promised changes would be made in the baseball operations department, even though he was pleased by the direction of the farm system.

I think we're going to be hearing tons of Gonzalez to the Sox rumors this off season, whether they have any truth to it or not due to the Hoyer/Theo connections etc. Personally I don't see Gonzalez being traded, but I'd welcome him if he does. Hoyer obviously knows a lot about the Red Sox farm system so he's not going to settle for a bunch of scrubs.

PADRES: Boston influx could follow Hoyer to Padres

Red Sox scouting director Jason McLeod ---- a Rancho Buena Vista High graduate and ex-Padres scout ---- said Tuesday it's natural for Hoyer, a former assistant general manager in Boston, to consider some of the people he worked with for eight seasons for front office positions with the Padres. Currently there are two high-level openings in the farm system after the team's vice president of scouting and player development, Grady Fuson, was fired on Sunday, and scouting director Bill "Chief" Gayton was reassigned to an unknown position on Monday, according to a team official.

Apparently the Padres sent out a copy of the schedule or something to season ticket holders and there wasn't a single picture of Adrian Gonzalez on it, leading to speculation that he will be traded. Who knows. I know back in 2003/2004 the Sox sent theirs out without Manny when they were trying to trade him for Arod. Not sure if it's a big deal, I guess we'll see.

Dealing AGone makes sense, last yr of his contract, Padres need some talent upgrades, Sox need a bat because their approach doesn't work without a couple of boppers.

    Hundley has surgery on hernia

Catcher expects to be 100 percent by spring training

SAN DIEGO – Padres catcher Nick Hundley underwent surgery Wednesday to repair a sports hernia.
“I'll be 100 percent by spring training,” Hundley said.
Hundley, 26, said he originally suffered the injury in May and played through it to the end of the season.

Gonzalez might put Padres in a bind First baseman trade bait if no long-term contract

    http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2009/nov/09/gonzalez-might-put-cash-strapped-padres-in-a-bind/

Given the combination of his offense, defense and community contributions, Gonzalez might project to be an $18 million to $22 million player. The Padres wanted to rid themselves of Peavy at half that amount.
And Gonzalez will come of age as a free agent at a time when Jeff Moorad's ownership group will still be capping the payroll budget far short of the major league average while working to complete its complicated purchase agreement from John Moores.
So if the cash-strapped Padres can't negotiate a long-term agreement with Gonzalez — who hit .277 this season with 40 homers and 99 RBI — they have only two options:
•Trade Gonzalez before he becomes a free agent.

Looks like Adrian maybe on the move. Trade talks came up already at the owners meetings.

Well, you could see it coming, A Gone is too expensive for the shoestring financing plan of the new ownership.

The upside is this is a seller's market, there are not many big bats available this offseason, AGone is a better player than Matt Holiday, so we should be able to restock the farm system with some good prospects.

SAN DIEGO ---- First baseman Adrian Gonzalez won his second straight Rawlings Gold Glove on Wednesday. But will it be his last with the Padres?
Gonzalez admitted during a conference call that he's aware how often his name has been circulating through the rumor mill this offseason. And he's not very fond of that extra attention.

SD will also name Jason McLeon Assistant GM which is a HUGE loss for the Red Sox. He was the Sox top scouting director since 2004 and is responsible for drafting guys like Pedroia, Ellsbury, Buchholz, Bard, etc. That should excite Padre fans a lot, the guy knows how to spot talent. Again big loss for the Sox.
