    Dolphins receive little compensation
By Tim Graham | Monday, March 31, 2008, 03:01 PM

On a day when Wayne Huizenga surely earned a nice chunk of compensation for giving up 50 percent of the Dolphins, his team didn’t get a whole lot for what it lost in free agency last year.

The NFL this afternoon announced the breakdown of compensatory draft picks it will dole out at this year’s draft. They are “determined by a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors” from last off-season’s compensatory free agents.

So what kind of bonus will the Dolphins get for losing the likes of Sammy Morris, David Bowens, Damion McIntosh and Jeff Zgonina while signing Jay Feely and David Martin?

The 204th selection (tacked onto the sixth round) and the 245th pick (seventh round).

Since the compensatory system was adopted in 1994, the Dolphins have received 13 bonus picks.

While I don't fully get how the systems works, I agree with you. I thought we would get more than that.

The Bengals, Falcons, Redskins, and Ravens have been awarded third-round compensatory picks by the NFL.
The Ravens and Bengals each got four extra picks, the most in the league. The Redskins were awarded the highest third-round compensation pick at No. 96 overall. ROTOWORLD

we did pretty well, it's the teams that got third and fourth rounders that I'm envious of...

I woulda thought we'd at least get the first comp pick of the 6th and 7th rounds, instead we are right in the middle (not that a couple of selections would make much of a difference).

How do you guys figure? We didn't lose any real good starters.

We also get another 7th rounder cause right now the draft is 3 picks short of the mandatory 255.

This is what was predicted the last few months.

Only 1 5th rounder was given out which was to San Diego for losing Donnie Edwards.

Otherwise only 9 other picks went out in rounds 3-4 for clearly much larger losses (ie: 4th rounder for Nate Clements to the Bills).

well at first i thought this was good news that were getting an extra 6th and 7th pick. However, then i saw that some other teams got 3rd and 4th round picks and now im pretty ticked. Well, i guess a 6th and 7th is better than nothing... but still... damn.

well, it's actually pretty simple. The guys we lose are not very good. If they commanded greater money, we would get better compensation.

I'm with you on this one. For the past few years we got shafted with 0 comp picks, and the Pats always seem to get some. It doesn't make much sense to me how the whole system works. I think holding our aging players for to long had more than one negitive effect though. While the Pats would let some of their big name free agents go to other teams for large contracts. I'm sure it wasn't to get comp picks, but because they are cheap basturds. LOL I hate the Pats!!

It's pretty simple. You draft well, you can afford to let better players go. Buffalo got a 4th for Nate Clements and his huge deal. Did Miami have anything in the ballpark of that? No, so I don't see why folks are thinking we got screwed.

    over there
We really have'nt been a good team for a while and in turn have not had great players.
Sure,I would like a 3rd or 4th but in reality we got something. That's good enough for me.I don't think we got screwed at all.We need to just start putting a product on the field, than when we lose them to FA,we can complain about what we did'nt get in return.

I remember reading a link to an article based on something that CK posted predicting this very scenario. I would have liked to see a 5th round pick, but a 6th is just as well. Look at it this way, we now have 2 more picks than we did at the start of the day, so it's nice to get something. I'm so used to having a limited amount of picks, it's nice to go into this draft with so many.

Well, NE didnt get any, the Jets didnt get any...

The Bills got 2 but hey...its better than NE and the Jets getting anything...

I think those picks are worth those players given the circumstances...its all in who we select with the choices.
