I'll tell you this about UF...if they don't have one or two WRs step up and play better, they're going to wind up with 2 losses this season and one's going to be to LSU.

Do you get a little head start? Of course.

Yet somehow an unranked Miami is now #9 in the polls. If we lose, we will drop back again. It's about taking care of business. Which is why the rankings now don't mean as much.

IMHO LSU is the most over rated team in CFB. Their D returns 4 starters and no defensive lineman that are capable of controlling the inside which is critical in stopping UF. Al Woods ain't gonna cut it......Their LB's like Coleman and Riley are not going to make anyone forget Butkus...not Dick Butkus but even Marlon Butkus or Butkus Rocky's dog...ain't happenin......they are OK in the secondary but PB&J or Peterson or whatever he calls himself now days and Lotson are not going to effect a game making tackles 25 yards downfield.......Florida may not throw for 10 yards if they can run for 5 miles...........

On offense, Jefferson cannot throw the ball over 12 yards and Russell Sheppard is not ready to play yet, Scott will quit of you hit him and is not that good anyway, Keiland Williams is good but needs space, the talent in their offensive line is young and confused easily, their WR's are very talented but do you really want to rely on Jefferson to get them the ball against Haden and Co......and they cannot cover a kick off to save their collective a$$e$.

They beat Washington who is terrible by 8 (but hey that Idaho win and playing 11 on 10 (Aaron Crap was missing)against USC vaulted them into the top 25), Vandy who is only slightly better than Washington had them within 10 into Q4, and they spanked a pitiful...I mean seriously bad..... La. Lafayette team a school that should be playing Mitchell High School, that had them relatively close for at 17-3 at the half.

Match ups mean a lot and this is a bad one for LSU......Tebow will run for somewhere between 500 and 1300 yards in that game .... he will not need to throw for 6 inches to win that game IMHO but with no DL to control the inside LSU will be forced to stack inside and Cooper, Thompson, and heck Al E. Gator could line up and get open 1-1 with enough time. If they want to play a 2 deep and stack inside...good luck with covering Demps, Hernandez and Rainey running underneath crosses against LB's...................

Suppose UM loses to VT and UF loses to Kentucky this weekend. UM would drop back to 15 or so and would effectively be out of the NC picture already....UF loses and max they drop is to 6 or 7. It matters where you start....suppose UF, Texas, Cal and UM run the table (take care of business)......the schedule is toughest at UM but there is no way they vault those 3...it matters where you start.

I agree you have to take care of business first definitely agree...but it matters that there is a poll right now...how is UF #1...is it because they beat Bob, Atlantis and UT? Wow that makes them worthy..or is it maybe because they finished 1 last year, have a lot of fans, money and history.

Why is LSU in the top 10, Ole Miss at 4, and Georgia that cannot stop anyone and is in the top 25.....or why is Okie St., Oklahoma and Nebraska all sitting with losses in the top 25.....how in the world did Okie State beating a Georgia team that has..... my god.... Joe Cox at QB and vault into the top what 8? Alabama is probably legit as is Texas....but how do we know ...because Bama beat SWNE Central State of Franklin by 216 points?

I submit it is because if you look at the match ups that the BCS, ESPN and the NCAA wants it is any combination of Oklahoma, Texas, USC, Notre Dame, Florida, Alabama and LSU....they over value the system and those conferences, so those teams can absorb a loss and still return the most money in a NC game.....do not think the NCAA/ESPN or BCS are rooting for a Boise/TCU NC game......................

My point of this diatribe is that there should be no rankings until week 6 at least...and I agree with you to a degree......

    Miami deserves it.

If they win the next two games, they deserve to be in the Top 4 IMO.

Why do you think Washington is any good? I see you are from La. but I also watched both the LSU and USC games and....again just MHO....Washington is not good.....they are young and getting better and certainly playing for their new coach with great enthusiasm...but they are not good IMHO.....what do you see that makes you think they are good...playing a mediocre IMHO LSU team (no offense) close? Beating a laughable effort on offense from USC and Aaron Crap...I mean Corp...nahhhhh I mean Crap..........I missed the much anticipated UW-Idaho match up but beating Idaho by 20 and having them throw for 3 bills on you would not exactly vault them into my top 25...............I was curious why you see them as good or at least not terrible...although I love Jake Locker's heart..........

one other thing that irks me about the whole BCS set up is how the system is manipulated...Florida for instance got about a .007 bump last year because they had one more game fall into October than the other "contenders", and you get more "style points" from the BCS computer for October wins than September wins........this year Florida plays two non conference games AFTER October 1...FIU and FSU where the other major "contenders" play their non conference schedule up front and generally only have 1 non conference game AFTER 10-1-2009 .... this should end up being a .005-.01 "bump" for them given they win both against the other schools.....so they front load an extra conference game against the weak sisters of the conference where a 1 point win gets you about the same style points early as a 50 point win and they get more style points by beating up FIU late...............

I never said they were good. Terrible to me is the bottom 25-40 teams in the country, and Washington is not that IMO, and yes it has a lot to do with Jake Locker.

I totally agree there should be no polls until halfway through the year. About that time you will start to see teams becoming who they really are.

I think a lot is being talked about this UF game. A bit too much. Should they have done more? Yeah. Heck most of us wanted them to kill them. However, it was a lot like the UM vs UF game last year. UT was not really doing anything that showed they were going to win the game. Hold UF yes, but not win. Thus, UF went REAL vanilla/conservative. Just like last year. In the end, a win is a win. ESPECIALLY when you start near(or in this case at ) the top of the rankings.

I think UF was happy just to get away with a win. Our top wr was out, our 2nd wr hurt himself in the game, our TE and best RB was sick with (I have heard) a 102 degree fever, and our (arguably) best DE was also sick. So our playmakers (which are already thin from graduation and injuries) were out... and we are winning and UT is looking like they are not really going to threaten us much on offense. So, yeah UF went real conservative.

I think it is humorous that the same people saying there should not be any polls yet, because you should wait to see what the teams are made of are the same ones that are being quick to write off this Gator team after one bad day. Especially when they did win.

I agree O. The Gators do and did what needs to be done...especially when you come in #1. IMHO there should be no polls and in that case I think the Gators would have laid the wood a little more...Tennessee is terrible and UF is better than they showed against UT. I do not think IMO that there is any doubt that at the end of the year the Gators will be there under this system....I do think that there should be no poll until week 6 or so because right now we are evaluating teams against inferior competition for the most part and on last years team which is totally different year to year. so do we know what is what...not really. Suppose UM, UF, Texas and Cal are undefeated in week 6....if you vote on competition then Texas and UM should be ranked higher...under this system unless Florida stumbles bad then there is no way anyone is going to jump over one of the most popular teams with the most popular player in this system........and it is designed that way.

NCAA/BCS and ESPN want UF to play for the NC and they will do all they can to establish and promote a system of doing just that. Most teams work to get to a NC game, Florida has to almost in many ways play their way OUT of it.

I get your hypocrisy comment although I would also say that many Gator fans said a win was not just a win when Utah was doing the winning, it had to be against a ranked opponent and convincing.......now since Florida won ugly against a lousy team.....suddenly a win IS a WIN...so it works both ways................

Really? Enough with the conspiracy theories. This broken record is getting old. ESPN and the BCS want UF to play for the national title? I'm sure that returning all 11 starters and all 11 backups on a top 5 national title winning defense and arguably the greatest college QB of all time had nothing to do with the preseason #1 ranking. Say what you want about when the polls should come out or whatever, but seems to me that the voters had no problem dropping Georgia out of #1 after putting them there in the preseason last year. The whole Utah issue is way overblown yet constantly a fall back for the schedule conversation.

If you honestly want to compare these two schedules

    http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/teams/schedule?teamId=57&year=2008

    http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/teams/schedule?teamId=254&year=2008

Is the current system flawed, of course, will they ever be able to please everyone? Highly doubtful. I mean seriously its still September and these conversations are way premature.

I'll tell ya what...I WILL discuss and post what I want to until a moderator tells me I am out of line for posting...if it is a conspiracy theory you do not like....do not read it and/or do not respond to it.....pretty simple.

This conversation has been about LSU, Washington, the BCS, NCAA and a host of other things, not just Florida, and I have been complimentary of UF........so my take is that someone might be a bit defensive.

As for UF i have no problem their being #1 in an initial poll...the issue being discussed if you review is whether their should even be a poll this early...but since their is...yeah UF is deserving of being #1 in a PS poll....do I think wins against College of Bob, Atlantis and UT are worthy of solidifying that rank....NO...if you have a problem with my opinion then you are certainly entitled to yours and to disagree, but I will not post or not post based on what you think is a conspiracy theory.

If you remember i went through a long and detailed schedule analysis from last year and if you remember my conclusion was the BCS got it completely wrong based on the numbers....it should have been UF and Texas and not anyone else in the NC game.

If you are naive enough to think that the NCAA/BCS networks and ESPN do not want money teams in the game and will do everything they can to get that result then you are being totally biased IMHO. I do not understand sarchasim to the argument the BCS wants the two most lucrative teams in the game and they control the "system" and will do what they can to achieve the results they want...Why would they want Boise and TCU? ......you think that is best for them financially? I guess in business you set out to make LESS money and MINIMIZE your upside...news to me, and I do not get sarcastic nature. So to be clear YES...I do think the BCS/NCAA/ESPN want what is the most financially attractive for them.......well uhhhh why would they want anything else........

It is what it is. I do not blame them any more than I blame Florida for scheduling two Non Con games late as I said in another post....actually pretty damn smart.....is the system broke you betchya IMHO.....that is what is being discussed. Possibly you should be less defensive about subject matter that is at best on the fringe of the discussion topic.

2 Minutes left in the UF-UT game, Tennessee only down by 10...and they had the ball, yet they continued to run the ball? They had absolutely no intentions of winning that game, because they were happy to lose as long as the score didnt embarrass them. With all of the problems UF was having with it's top skill players getting sick or injured, we went to the most basic vanilla offense you could imagine. Even with all of this, and with Tebow fumbling on the TEN 4 yard line - they still lost by multiple scores. I can't see any moral victory to be had there, I would have given them more credit had their coach even made an attempt to win the game. Losing is never the intended endgame in anything.

    "The blueprint for beating UF"

I'll tell you what, if the blueprint for beating Florida contains playing their top skills players while they are sick, running the ball nearly every down despite how many yards you need, having UF not even attempt to stretch the field, & STILL lose by 2 scores.....please every team out there that plays the gators follow this blueprint. It sounds more like the blueprint to UF getting their 3rd NC in 4 years.

The "blueprint for beating UF" was made by Ole Miss last year, that is the one I'm concerned about.

Grats to Miami for getting into the top 10 & best of luck the rest of the way.

Personally I do not think anyone can play with UF until the SEC championship game.....maybe FSU can play the game of their lives and compete but I do not think so. The Gators are way too talented for the rest of the conference and I do not see any scheme that can make up for the talent gap between UF and the rest of the conference......I still say it is the Alabama/Ole Miss winner versus UF and then a NC game...two game season..

Considering UF has the most talented players in the country, I absolutely think most teams should simply strive to keep it close (if they keep it close, maybe they get lucky with some turnovers or big plays).

Considering how much UF was favored (30 pts) and all the talk leading up to the game, regardless of whether Kiffin played to win at the very end, losing by two scores was pretty good on his part. He kept his team competitive and in the game, a game by all accounts he probably knew he couldn't win.

I'm not suggesting, nor have I ever suggested, UT provided a blue print for beating Florida. I have been saying a win is a win, and that the score should not hurt anyone's view of Florida.

I absolutely think it should help Tennessee in the eyes of everyone else though.

I mean, it's real easy to talk and win big when you have the most talented players in the country. But to go into a hostile environment, made even more hostile given the circumstances, and keep your team playing hard all the way to the end is commendable.

I feel that Kiffin pulled the remaining rug from under his teams feet by being so conservative and praying that hid daddy would come up with some big plays to close the scoring gap. They got one TD at the tail end of the game and it ended up being meaningless due to Lane Kiffin's refusal to try and win.

The "blueprint" comments weren't targeted at any poster, it was more of my venting after the crap I heard from Lane Kiffin in the postgame along with what some of the journalists have been spewing(Janele Brown).

When you consider the talent that Tennessee has in their Secondary(top tier in NCAA) along with the hobbled state UF's skill players put the team in - there should really be no surprise that the game wasnt a blowout(it nearly was anyways). Did you think Tennessee would just roll over and die in all facets of the game just because their QB didnt even belong in pop warner?

I for one, was taking criticism from fellow gator fans because of the emphasis I had put on the TEN game. Even going so far as to tell them I was worried because of their secondary & our missing Deonte Thompson...when Riley Cooper pinched a nerve - my nerves were starting to get to me. Obviously losing Harvin & Louis makes an impact on UF, but losing your next 2 studs in a game against probably the best secondary you will face all year long(with veteran NFL coaching mind you) should give every reason for Urban Meyer to call things conservatively enough to ensure victory. Thats what he did. We went deep once all game, and essentially called the same dive-option until we got away with the W.

Right now I just want UF to get healthy and Im hoping the flu doesnt spread, that could be potentially devastating.

I am in no way saying we should be conservative all the time. However, the way the game was going... UT not really putting much of a push and UF wounded (health wise) I think that game in-particular it was ok just to push to get out of there with a win and to hope to get healthy. It is a shame UF did not do more, but under the circumstances, (to quote Chris Rock) "I understand". ;)

Good analysis of the situation...but I would not be real worried about Kentucky. Mike Hartline and Will Fidler are not exactly scary QB's nor is the Kentucky talent near UF's second team guys................IMHO

Well considering Kentucky hasn't beaten Florida in (at least) the past 7 meetings, and factoring in the talent of both teams, I am certain that factoid will no longer be true come Sunday.

I remember them making a big deal about it last year, or maybe the year before, when Navy beat ND. UF over UK is now the longest, or 2nd longest, active streak right now. UF over Vandy is top 3 as well I believe.
