***official post best live guitar solo videos thread*** MODS can merge my other Eddie Van Halen solo thread I started here if you want. I just wanted to see other guitar solos that you all thought were incredible. Here's another one that was off the hook, IMO. I'm sorry, but anything beyond the length of a normal song - about 5-6 minutes, tops - crosses into the realm of masturbation. Unless it's Hendrix...because he was a god.
Well Eddie Van Halen would agree with you. He says Hendix was the best. I personally think EVH was better. He just put everything at the time together, came up with unearthly sounds of his own, and mixed it all together...MASTERED it, IMO.
I like Gusatvo Guerra's versoin of Canon Rock. He won a Joe Satriani Chrome Boy at a Satriani Sponsored event. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hof5_i8PuAg"]YouTube - Gustavo Guerra - Canon Rock[/ame]
I think he was tied with Steve Vai for #1 in the world at the time he died. Definately one of the bests ever.
Here is Gustavo Guerra playing "Crushing Day" by Joe Satriani on that Chrome Boy he won. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMYdlOmGnmk"]YouTube - Crushing Day - Joe Satriani[/ame]
agree to disagree. EVH was a student of Eric Clapton, though he had respect for Hendrix, Beck and to some degree Page. EC was his influence. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MRJZGMbFj0"]YouTube - George Lynch - Mr. Scary [Studio][/ame]
I see why Gustavo is sitting down the entire time he plays Crushing Day. Joe Satriani says it best here: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJO_18sTbhA"]YouTube - Crushing Day - Joe Satriani[/ame] Even Satriani can't play the entire song standing live!
What I am saying is that Eddie Van Halen himself has always said that Jimi Hendrix was the best guitar player of all time.
EVH honoring the great Les Paul with Cathedral and Hot For Teacher. Not totally solo but Awesome! [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1wkd8RiekKU"]YouTube - Eddie Van Halen with Les Paul[/ame]
My top 5 ever: 1. Eddie Van Halen 2. Joe Satriani 3. Jimi Hendrix 4. Randy Rhoads 5. IDK...Steve Vai maybe?
Not a solo, but captures the essence of Hendrix. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=85zp1zVVDAQ"]YouTube - Jimi Hendrix - Voodoo Child (Slight Return) (Original)[/ame]

And one for brother John. The first time I heard this version was in the mid 80's. I wasn't paying attention and heard this on the TV and wondered where this version came from, I was a Huge Hendrix fan in those days-he was all I listened to. Then I realized it wasn't Hendrix at all.... [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1GSpbuFSr2o"]YouTube - Stevie Ray Vaughan - Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)[/ame]

Best concert I ever saw...... Van Halen was the opening act for Black Sabbath, late 70's at the Sportatorium I believe it was....damn I'm old
Greatest solo ever is the first song on this list... http://www.playlist.com/playlist/16895987979 It's a specific version of Voodoo Child by SRV (or yet undetermined origin...were were wrong earlier ) My top 5 Guitarists 1. SRV 2. Hendrix 3. EVH 4. Clapton 5. Page?
The actual name of the song is Voodoo Child (Slight Return) and yes there is a difference. SRV covered this version from Jimi. I'm not sure where this one comes from though.
often considered one of the best guitar leads, Joe Walsh and Don Felder... [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=spTtowVTVLg"]YouTube - The Eagles Hotel California 1976 live[/ame]

Lot of greats mentioned in this thread. I am a bit hesitant to agree with the "best" label as it is so much up to the taste of the listener. All of the guitarists listed here took the art to it's highest level. We are blessed to live in a time that we could enjoy the gifts they gave the world with their music. It isn't just to be able to master the technical aspect of guitar or shred at light speed to me it is more making a guitar make music that stirs your soul and makes you, at least for the moment, feel life is good. I do agree that all listed here are among the best. I'd add Tom Scholz from Boston just because I loved the music he made come out of those les pauls. I'd also add this guy. Funny how Ozzy had a knack or luck to hang with and or find great guitarists. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYMupc564zE"]YouTube - Zakk wylde - 'farewell ballad' solo - Original[/ame]
If we are going down Ozzy's road then we CAN NOT forget this guy... This solo has elements that are similar to Brian May's Brighton Rock solo and I believe has an early version of Dee in it. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KxN0mQgQdPM"]YouTube - Randy Rhoads - Spotlight Solo (Quiet Riot/Ozzy)[/ame]
Since I mentioned him, a rather un appreciated guitarist, Brian May doing his Brighton Rock solo. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-m69BrvJNfg"]YouTube - Queen - Brighton Rock Solo[/ame] His guitar was built by himself and his father from an old fireplace mantle. The controls not only give him control of the individual pickups, they give him control of individual pots on the pickups as well.
Steve Lukather of Toto, highly regarded by EVH vs Tom Scholz MIT graduate, completed much of the first Boston album but the vocals before the rest of the musicians were hired... Could you elaborate on this? I'm admittedly new to Hendrix and SRV and have spent some time trying to sort out the difference between Voodoo Child (Slight return), Voodoo Child, and Voodoo Chile. From what i've found Voodoo Child (Slight Return) and Voodoo Child sound very similar (though admittedly most of the ones I jam out to are (Slight Return). I was under the impression that they were the same song (as Jimi played it different every time anyway). Voodoo Chile on the other hand is a very slow bluesy song that is much from either of the top two songs. Am I correct?
The two songs are originally from Jimi's last studio release with the Experience. the first on the list is Voodoo Chile, a 15 minute blues opus that was a live recorded jam in the studio. I do not believe it was ever covered or re released. The second, Voodoo Child (Slight Return) is the more popular and often re-created song. http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:fifqxq85ldje The verse of this song starts "..stand up next to a mountain, chopped it down with the edge of my hand..." has been labeled by various names including just Voodoo Chile but the actual name is Voodoo Child (Slight Return). It is the signature song of SRV from his earlier career highlighting his abilities and his influences. The two songs are really nothing alike. incorrectly labeled...should be Voodoo Child (Slight Return) [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7yPRYL_Oq0"]YouTube - Jimi Hendrix - Voodoo Chile Atlanta '69 '70[/ame] Another that should be Voodoo Child (Slight Return) [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SOnXaZ4EZFM"]YouTube - "Voodoo Chile" - The Jimi Hendrix Experience (Live 1969)[/ame] The tag says (Not Slight Return) lol, but the label is correct. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXqxXrjoOf0"]YouTube - Jimi Hendrix - Voodoo Chile (Not Slight Return) Part 1[/ame] Regardless of what the songs are called, the correct title for the SRV and Jimi songs is Voodoo Child (Slight Return).
Absolutely. Who knows where he would have gone if he had not died. Amazing talent. Ozzy always seems to land with a phenomanal gutarists. As for Msy I read he plays with a coin instead of a pick. And yes he is another one of the greats.
When you are the greastest Heavy Metal singer of all time it should be easy to find a great guitar player.
