Sean Smith is the man, he palmed that ball out of the air like he was gently picking up a child's most favorite toy. And it is not the first time he has done that: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9M2w9m320k"]YouTube - Sean Smith - LEGENDary interception[/ame] Those are ball skills folks, something Jason Allen never had

It was an amazing thing to see, Smith simply..palmed the ball...he just reached up and...palmed the ball...snatched it to him...and double tapped his feet inbounds as well as Greg C did on his long reception. That cat is something special, any offensive coordinator in the NFL just took a whole raft of plays out of the playbook because of that play.
FTW!! [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPhVc9sJZcY"]YouTube - Sean Smith 2nd interception in the NFL ( Against the Saints )[/ame]
Man, we have some athletes on this team, against Carolina McCown could not believe Wake sacked him so quickly, against NO Brunnel, a 15 yr vet, was shaking his head when Sean Smith snatched that ball one handed. We got something cooking down in Miami.
Can't wait for the regular season matchups with the big receivers he's going to face... Moss will get him, but Sean will make his share of plays... INT team leader in preseason I believe... will be the INT leader in the regular season... at least 6 picks...
The amazing thing about Smith is that he doesn't have to gamble to intercept passes. That means he won't get beat trying to jump routes as often as some other corners who have big INT numbers.
The guy is a gamer pure and simple. Will Allen's workload on the other side should climb dramatically as the season goes on, which is a great thing for our pass defense.
Both of these rookie CBs could be the beginning of something very special. Don't you just love how we now have people who are running the Dolphins who appear to know what they are doing and have a blueprint for what they want to accomplish. This as compared to past people who appeared to not have a clue and used a dartboard and balloons to pick their draft.
he has a great feel for looking back for the pick and great hands to get those picks when they become available. he should rack up quite a few over the course of his career
It's not just the presence that he had in palming a ball that was, by all rights, uncatchable for even 98% of Wide Receivers; it's the concentration that he showed in cradling it with his fingertips until he could secure it - all the while being aware of the sideline and staying in-bounds. That was amazing...that it was done by a rookie makes it unbelievable. Might we have a situational two-way player on our hands?
Not that I'm advocating using him on offense any time soon, but I can't help but wonder how effective he'd be on the fade as the intended WR.
To me Adamp, Sean Smith is a safety masquerading as a Cb. Ball skills are something Sparano mentioned in his presser, and Smith has them in spades, it was one play and surely not enough to change everything to suit SS but two or three years down the road?
Well Nabo, the definition of talent is making the difficult look easy for them, the talented do it in such a way that the unskilled say "I can do that", the ultra talented do things that no one thinks is possible, and they make it look easy. In a pinch, why not use Smith inside the red zone? JT played Te after all. Speaking of JT...on the sidelines, after that play, you just know even JT said..."Wow".
Especially Saban, who was supposed to be some kind of Defensive genius, yet couldn't pick players who fit his own damn scheme. Channing is the one player he picked who has performed well in a 3-4...and still, he's not all that and there were better players available when we chose him.
I think because of his ability to stick to his receiver he belongs at corner. A guy that can just shut down his receiver is so rare, when you have a chance at it you can't pass. I mean do you really think we will see any fade routes in the red zone against him? Absolutely no way.
well he could be but for now I'm happy with him at the corner. just keep him on the taller receivers. i really want to see him the first six games of the regular season when teams will game plan against us. i want to see if any glaring weaknesses come out on certain routes. he seems pretty solid for the most part. it seems to me you have to attack with quick cuts ratherr than fades and flys. i feel pretty comfortable that noone is going over the top on smith's side. Right now my biggest concern regarding him is he seems pretty soft on run support but we can coverup one player like that on our defense
That was foretelling. When Sean Smith gets the advantage of having a sideline involved on a pass attempt , he is going to make plays . He is going to make a lot of them in the future , some right away. He can be in front of plays , and with the limiting of distance from a side/goal line he can long stride to get in better position and can flat out sky to get the ball at it's highest point . Right now wouldn't you be surprised if he had the chance to make an interception and didn't? I would be. He has the innate ball skills to come up with game changing plays ,regularly . Now , why wouldn't he look good in red? Like the red zone. On offense. Maybe not immediately , but seriously it has to be a consideration at some point down the road.
True, but in my opinion (given time) he is the kind of guy that can cover any receiver. Especially at his size. I want him to line up against guys like Andre Johnson, Calvin Johnson, Randy Moss, so on. I did mention a week or so ago that one thing you may be able to do, is have him cover the opponents TE in some obvious passing downs if that TE is a pass catching threat. He has great flexibility on defense because of his size, but I like him at corner. Not saying he couldn't play safety of course I bet he would be great.
I don't think he will. He might not be able to keep up with him. IMO, he covers Michael Jenkins, who is 6-4 217. pounds. Will Allen covers Roddy White.
He lacks the aggression and explosion to stick his nose in there like Bell and Wilson do. He makes tackles, sure, and is large, but he doesn't really attack the ball carrier, imo. I actually think that down the road, when he loses a step, an experienced Vontae Davis will make a decent safety (like 9 years into his career).
i agree. i think roddy white white would be a bad matchup for smith. i think smith should do well against jenkins
Note to Jason Allen: PLEASE STUDY SEAN SMITH TO SEE WHAT A HIGH DRAFT PICK SHOULD BE DOING ON THE FIELD
i havent studied jason allen too much this preseason but my impressions of him is he got better. he actually seemed to be playing pretty well to me
I only saw him get burned once. But that's all I have seen, so for all I know he has had limited (very limited) action with the defense. Heck, he sat out a game with his 'flu' that he denied even having. Sparano snorted when a reporter told him JA denied being sick. Way to make it harder for your coach Jason, you numbskull. At least other players know enough to say "Whatever coach says is what's going on." lol. I sincerely hope Allen is improving. It is rare to find a kid with his combination of speed, hands AND hitting power.
I think we might be looking at the new devolped hybrid prototype to handle the evolution of the Fast tight ends in the league, he is the perfect player to match up with the dustin kellers, Jared cooks, greg olsens of the world.. I hope vontae is healthy so i could see smith matchup against gonzales.
