Regardless, for the money he just got paid, there's PLENTY of room for improvement.

It's well documented that Crowder has never lived up to being the player that his rookie season indicated he might be.

I don't hate Crowder, I don't think he's a bad player or the weakness on this team. I just wish there would have been an upgrade for the kinda money we spent on him.

It seems to me he makes most of his tackles after the RB has already gotten his yardage. I would like to see him make more plays around the line of scrimmage. Not 10 yards later. He seems to be always chasing after people.

That speaks more to our lack of depth then his ability.

We got a good deal for him... he could have gotten a lot more than that elsewhere, but he wanted to stay in Miami. His agent didn't like that he didn't even test free agency. At least he's someone who goes to practice for the team and not for the money.

I'm sorry but I find that hard to believe.....in fact I was probably more disappointed than his agent that we didn't allow him to try the market before we signed him.

Considering his lack of play making, he was pretty expensive..

I think its difficult to let a guy test the market when that position is a weakness for you and if you lose him, you can't replace him with a better player. It simply doesn't make much sense to me to do that.

They were doing just that in the scrimmage.

They had some nice blitz packages and where he showed good timing. Other times he was taking on a blocker and thereby freeing up another guy to get in there.

I think we'll see improvement from him this year. He'll be a 3-down guy for sure. He's not the most sudden of players. So the key IMO will be to call blitzes that allow him to be effective or affect the play. Not just lining up over a guard and running straight ahead (like in the Bates defense).

You make a good point...and I'm quite sure that is exactly why we signed him so quickly.

Personally, I would have thrown in some more cash and made an attempt to get Scott.

I can live with Crowder tho, it's Ayodele that I really would like to see replaced asap

I totally disagree with this statement. Crowder was not getting tackles 10 yards down the field.

That speaks to both the lack of depth and his ability.

I still don't understand how you think we overpaid for Crowder. His contract is very incentive based and his base salary is rather cheap for a starting ILB.

    Crowder's Base Salaries:
    2009: $1.5 million
    2010: $2.1 million
    2011: $2.5 million

    Scott's Base Salaries:
    2009: $4.5 million
    2010: $3.85 million
    2011: $4.9 million
    2012: $5.6 million
    2013: $6.9 million
    2014: $7.75 million

I was basing what i said on "guaranteed" money, and just going from memory, I believe that Crowder got about 2/3 of what was guaranteed to Scott.

Yea I think we got Channing Crowder cheap he could have gone out in the market and got a couple more million.

    Bart Scott is over paid.

    Bart Scotts numbers last year.

    TCKL 82 SCK 1.5 FF 2

    Channing Crowder numbers last year.

    TCKL 113 SCK 0.0 FF 1

As you can see Bart Scott might have had 1.5 more sacks the Channing and 1 more FF but Channing had 31 more tackles. In the next three years Channing is due to make 6 million and Bart Scott is due to make 14 million. So the Jets paid Bart Scott 8 million more dollars to get 1.5 more sacks ans 1 more ff. I think we got Channing for a good price and he is a solid player.

I have not seen terms of Crowder's contracts anywhere other than "an incentive laden $20 million, 3 year deal". I got the base salaries from the NFLPA website.

Scott's deal is a 6 year deal worth $48 million with $22 million in guarantees.

If you can find a guaranteed number for Crowder's deal, please post it... because I can't.

    6 years, $48 million - $22 million guaranteed

    Channing Crowder
3 years, reportedly $15 million - looks to be less than $10 million guaranteed

Take from that what you will.

Your average backup isn't going to step in and play as well as Crowder has. Your above-average backup isn't going to step in and play as well as Crowder has.

Crowder is what he is, a slightly above average starting 3-4 ILB who does everything fairly well but doesn't stand out in any capacity.

We had neither at the time...it's a shame they didn't play better in his absence that game, we could have got him a lot cheaper if they had.

It was rumored that his agent sent out some feelers and didn't get the response that he had hoped for.....if someone would have paid him more, I doubt it would have been enough to make it worth leaving the state of Florida.

And we both know that agents would never stretch the truth.....lol

I'm sure Channing wanted to stay in Florida, he's a homeboy...

We seem to be beating this subject into the ground.....I like Crowder, he's an entertaining guy and a decent player. I just don't think he has the instincts to make too much improvement. Hopefully the coaches can come up with some schemes to make him more of an impact player..

I'm sorry, but I'm not sure I saw Crowder hit the wrong gap very often. I believe CK also put up some stats a while ago that reflected Crowder making a very large number of tackles at or near the LOS.

Thank you for the quotes Marty.

Every time I read Sparano's thoughts, he gives you like six sentences but really, tells you very little. Its that first sentence that you need to read/listen to and then everything else is just repeating in different ways, lol. He tells you a whole lot of nothin'.

Uh, Reggie Torbor sort of came in and was a starter on a Super Bowl winning team. That's pretty much the definition of above average as a backup.

I think the guy will step up & shut up his many critics this year
no doubt in my mind, next years draft & free agency will be about the NT & ILB's
until then, we play w/ Crowder & hope for his potential to be realized in 2009

    think about it

Crowder won't be the reason we lose games, but more than likely he won't be the reason we win them either.

He's serviceable enough to get the base pay he received, I'm thrilled it's incentive based because that's going to make him work his *** harder to get that paycheck and maybe he'll make some impact plays doing it.

If it doesn't we can expect another similar season to last year and we didn't pay him so much that it limits the money we put elsewhere on the team.

works for me @ this point in our game

like I said: I think he'll step up & even if he does this problem will still be addressed next year in the draft & free agency
NT & ILB are our Achilles Heel
