This is a funk/soul band called "Tower of Power" that I've loved for many years now. They've been around since the late 60s, but really got going in the early 70s. They've gone through several singers since the original blind dude died. The original lead sax player is now the musical director/saxophonist for Saturday Night Live. He's that bigger dude with the beard and the hat..

I've seen them many times. I used to always see them when they would come to the "Bottom Line" in NYC. It was the best place to see them because it was small and the music would really fill up the whole place and you would feel it all pumping in your chest. You don't get that feel when they play in bigger places. They're great musicians and it still sounds good, but it's just not the same. They would play at the Bottom Line whenever they were in NY. I was usually there..

The fans who know about them are very committed, loyal and passionate or whatever, about them. They are all really great musicians. For many years the horn section has been hired by many different, popular bands to do horns on their albums. You've definitely have heard them before on someone's album, I'm sure, but that won't do them justice at all. You have to see them live to really appreciate them. They are also musician musicians type of guys. Their most popular and one of their best songs is called "What is Hip?". I couldn't find a good live version on YouTube. It was the more modern versions, which are good, but it's much better when the blind dude was singing and playing the Hammond.

The Bass player is named Francis "Rocco" Prestia and he is my favorite bass player. He plays 16ths and ghost notes like no one else. (even Jaco).( Uh oh! Please, I don't want to turn this into a Jaco vs Rocco debate). (I absolutely love Jaco. He's my 2nd. favorite bass player. . Jaco is also probably better at straight jazz, which he is also very good at playing).

Rocco has the most thumping 16ths and ghost notes that it hold the whole big band together and it would drive the whole thing like you wouldn't believe. At the end of the shows, when they announce everyone's names, Rocco gets the biggest and loudest applause.

Anyway....Check it. This tune is still a newer version of the band(mainly just the lead singer)(which is still awesome), but it's a good recording and you can really hear those awesome 16th and ghost notes. I'll keep looking for a better version of "What is Hip". Peace!

Hey FFIC. Have you ever heard Gary Moore play the tune called "Not the only fool in town"? I was looking for it on Youtube, but I could not find a clip of him playing that tune. It's my favorite tune that he plays. In my bands, we always played originals, but on some long gigs, we'd play that tune just for the fun of it. It totally whales!
