    We can go anywhere in the ocean now. That is incredible. To me this is bigger than the space shuttle. I cannot imagine what this is going to lead to.

    I find the wildlife interesting usually, its always interesting to see how it adapts to the pressure lack of light and low temperatures..... If anything is down there besides bacteria around the vents.........

    Around the vents we've been able to see before now, there's plenty of life around the vents, like everywhere else, they're just adapted to the area. In fact around those vents, its actually very high temps. Like melt your face hot.

    That is a great link, thanks. My second love is Marine biology and the deep Ocean floor. As you say there is no telling where this will lead!:up::up:

    They better be friendly....or we will just fire up our military and start producing a whole bunch of tartar sauce. If you catch my drift.

    It bugs me to see an unmanned vehicle called a sub. It's not a sub, it's an ROV. Another thing.. This might be a record for an ROV, but man has been there before;

    Marty, do you think that with the pasage of 35 years something could have happened to cause the floor to rise those 2000 feet rather than it just being a miscalulation?

    no, the displacement is too great.. if I had to hazard a guess, it would be that we are now more accurate with salinity and temperature measirements throughout the stratum. Both affect the speed of sound in water and can change the results. Every temperature/density layer would do something different to the sound waves... bend, speed up, slow down. As an old ping jockey, I would be interested to know how they went about the corrections.

    absolutely. think of the technology used to get this sub that far down. that could be used for other vessels as well. It would be interesting to know just how far past the crush depth could we get others down to.

    Holy crap, I can't believe someone actually went down there, as in real people. I never knew that, and just assumed it was not possible yet. Come to find out it happened decades ago. Crazy.
