To be honest, I don't know much about him, but at 6'5 338, it seems like he would at least fit the physical mold for a guy our FO would be interested in.

I could be wrong here but I recall Foster having a lot of conditioning and motivational issues in Denver. He was expected to be a key part to the zone blocking scheme but continously came in over weight so they shipped him off in the Dre' Bly deal. I believe he got replaced with Ryan Clady at LT but I could be wrong.

Also, Jon Jansen was a mess last year at RT for the Redskins. In the pre-season I watched him go up against Charles Johnson from the Panthers and he got tore up pretty bad so the Redskins went with Stephen Heyer at RT. If I remember correctly, Heyer was destroyed by Justin Tuck in week one or some other week and he got replaced.

In spite of what the coaching staff is telling us; do you really think they would be comfortable with a 6th round draft pick rookie protecting Pennington's blind side? I can't help but wonder about that....Plus which it's been this administration's habit to improve any chance they get. Wouldn't you think that if Foster offers improvement they would look to bring him in?
I do like the idea of Steinbach. But it's pretty much the same situation. Right now they seem to like Frye lining up at RG. But if we have a chance to improve with someone like Steinbach then it would make sense to try and bring him in.
Myself, I think the only OL assured of a job are Long, Carey, Smiley and Grove.

I doubt Steinbach would be just cut loose, but I think he would represent a Chad Pennington style acorn. The main thing is there are already a ton of resources invested in the line, and Steinbach is pretty close to Smileys skillset

No thank you to Foster. Id rather see what we have in Gardner and Garner at the tackle spots to be honest. He has regressed since he first came into the league having given up 12 sacks in 2007 for the lions even though he only started 9 games but played in 15.

Steinbach I would like a lot. The seem value mobility in their OG's a lot so I would think he would be on the radar if cut loose. There would be lots of competition for him though.

Are you seriously suggesting that a guy cut from a team that just went 0-16 might be an upgrade for a team that just went 11-5?

at first i agreed so i gave you a thanks. but i would like to have a couple of their WR's. there's always a few good players on a losing team. there's a handful of people on our 1-15 team that would have been an upgrade to a lot of different teams. like JT, ZT, RB, chris chambers, randy mcmichael, vernon carey, ect. the winning teams have more good players though. it's elementary my dear watson! lol

The key word is "cut" (i.e. not good enough for the 0-16 Lions)

good point. but we've cut a few good players. or we just let their contract play out and let them be free agents b/c we couldn't afford them, or would rather pay a younger player less money. zach thomas and randy mcmichael come to mind off the top of my head. plus there's a dozen people that we let go that didn't seem to play well for us but they looked like hall of famers playing for the Pats.

Were the Cowboys wrong to sign ZT after a team who went 1-15 cut him?

Were the Cowboys successful last year?

Don't get me wrong I love ZT and think he's the greatest Dolphin since the Zonk. Unfortunately I think that he's at the stage of his career where he is either what basically amounts to an onfield coach helping a young team hang together or he's a band aid solution.

I suppose it would depend on your own definition of successful. They did finish with a winning record.
Nonetheless, it would seem you're either sidestepping or missing my point.
Point being it's short sighted to think that an 0-16 or 1-15 team has absolutely no one on their roster with talent.
The Pats signed both Leigh Bodden and Paris Lenon. Two players from that 0-16 roster. Would you turn down a chance to sign Calvin Johnson? He was a member of that 0-16 roster

I'm interested in George Foster as a guard as well. The guy has been pretty good at times in his career, and there have been more unlikely reclamation projects.

The argument that him coming off a bad team makes him worthless is just plain bad. Pretty much every team has good players.

I have got to tell you I really like Foster, he has had some issues, but I think we could kick him into guard and he could be effective. I would have rather had Frank Omilyale, but the Bears already gobbled him up.

After suffering a 1-15 season, we on this board should of all people recognize that an 0-16 team will still have players with talent on it. What could it hurt to bring Foster in and have a look at him? If he doesn't cut it, cut him, simple as that.

Unfortunately I would say at this point it would be hard to rationalize putting more money into the O-line that is already costing a fortune unless it is because we have to put Thomas on IR. I feel fine going with Gardner as the third tackle but I don't feel secure about the Guard position...

    What's so crazy about that?

As PhinsRock pointed out, we went through a difficult season in '07 and we had alot of talent on that team. Noone is saying that Foster is a probowl player or would be on this team, but when looking at our depth along the OL, he could be a quality pickup if he is versatile enough to play G as well as T. It's a serious folly to just look at the record of a team when evaluating the individual talent that they have. :wink2:

    1) if Jake goes down, I think they will move Carey to the left & the replacement will fill in the RT not the LT
    2) the problem with playing Tackle or Guard is usually more about money then position from the point of view of someone going from offensive tackle to guard. most tackles have some experience at playing guard & the physical abilities to do so
    3) I think Thomas will return & if he doesn't there is sufficient talent on the roster to replace him. having said that, you never know what opportunities come up unexpectedly. the NewRegime knows the trenches. if something of real value presents itself, they will nail it down
