Wow, that was fun. Just for good measure, I tried to give everyone on this thread some rep. Made it through the first page, but ran out of rep giving power shortly after.

    Got it, thanks to alen!

Here's what I've figured out, minus the exact reputation point levels per green "bubble" (those I don't have yet)...

Your postcount, posts that have been thanked, and posts that have been + repped via the scale all add to a reputation total. This total is represented in your user control panel (for instance, I have 25 total points right now) and is reflected to the rest of the community through the little green bubbles under your avatar.

My wild *** guesses as to how the point values received are:

You receive one point per 10 posts made.

You receive 5 points per posts thanked.

You receive an unknown amount of rep per reputation action given by the scale. I'll need someone to hook me up in order to give an exact amount per that.

After that, when you hit certain point value levels you get another green bubble and a new message for your reputation level. It would look like you get an additional bubble for every 100 points of rep you earn. That would account for alen's reputation level.

    1000 posts = 10 bubbles. 100 thanks = 5 bubbles + rep and other remainders = 1 bubble.

At least I think I have this right

    ***EDIT***

I don't have it right, my math is off roflmao. I'm kinda tired right now, but I know I'm on the right track and levels.

I think it will be used up by the time they come to it by us. We are totally tearing this thing apart. I bet every person who is posting has a ban for 24 hours from repping.

Alright, I'm at 41 points right now - I've got 5 total thanks, 1 + rep bonus, and 104 posts. I'm showing 2 green bubbles of rep under my avatar. I'm not sure if it'll change at 50, but if it indeed does, that means that the amount of green bubs displayed are likely on an increasing scale - you need more and more rep to get a green bub after a certain point. I'll keep a close eye on totals and update as often as possible at major intervals :)

Alright, those two thanks on the last post indeed bumped me up 10 points - so it's certainly 5 points of rep per thanked post, and one point per rep given via the scale. I'm still working out the number of posts per point of rep.

Also, I'm at 51 points right now, and show only 2 bubbles under my avatar - meaning that the amount of rep needed to go up a bubble is indeed on a scale, the size of which I'm not certain of right now. I'll keep working on it and checking out at every rep/post/thanked level I can until we get it right :) That way, we'll know just how much rep is worth in terms of us determining if it's a useful measure of figuring out if we should suggest keeping it as a community tool :)

You bet! I mean, it's a function of the site, and ties into one of the important things about having an online community - moderation and monitoring.

All online communities have to have some way of policing themselves. In most communities, this is accomplished through moderators and administrators monitoring posts and making sure things are to a generally acceptable level. This is cool - it works for a lot of usegroups and websites. The only problem is, that mods and admins can't be everywhere, and they can't fix everything at once. To help with that, we've got some functions built into the message board here to help the mods.

The first of course is the report a post tool. This lets the mods know if they should check a particular post, merge duplicate posts, or move a post to the correct forum if need be. Handy, but there's still more to it.

Users need a way of policing themselves in the community as well. To that end, we have the reputation, thanks, and thread rating functions. If we use these things, we can generally figure out who are trustworthy, helpful members of the community, and these "power" users can handle a lot of the moderation functions that don't require moderator privileges like answering questions for newbies and calming discussions that are working themselves out of hand. If it's too easy to "game" the rep system, then we know it can be ignored when trying to figure out who the pillars of our community are :)

Does it? That's great! That means that someone with a lot of rep power thanking you means a lot, lot more than some freshly created account doing so. It'd take a lot (and I do mean a lot) of work to fake an account with a ton of rep in order to increase the size of someone's e-peen. I can dig it.

thats what ltdan said....all thanks give 5, but if you do the little scale under the posters username, then it gives your rep power.
