Just had a Bell South Tech working on the pedestal in my yard. He informed me that they were upgrading the system to be able to offer Direct TV via their phone lines. No dish needed! Anyone here already receiving this service?

I knew they were fighting this in the courts a few years ago to be able to do this but haven't kept up with it. It appears they won the case. This has to good for the consumer.

I only have it through a dish, but I really like it (had cable for years before directtv). I personally don't mind the dish. It's not like I am on the roof a lot or that it is an eye sore or anything either (IMO).

I'd be interested in knowing how the technology works with a phone line though.

I didn't bother to ask. I had them back to restore phone service that was interrupted while they were making the upgrade. The tech did mention optic fiber though. I also know that the service can be delivered through copper only you won't get as much bandwidth.

Ken, you're saying that billing is handled by AT&T but you still have to have a dish for DTV?

Are you not happy with DTV? There is only one reason I would switch and that is of course to receive Sunday Ticket.

Hope everyone likes it. Keeping with the tradition of raising your direct TV prices every 2 years or so the full price for "the Ticket this year is $349.

Next year(2011) it goes to $399.00:yes:

On second thought, they can KMA over those prices. I watch the games with my brother who has direct tv. He received 9 games through DTV last year that we wouldn't have gotten had he not had Sunday Ticket, and 7 that were broadcast OTA or Cable. The better the Phins do in the future, the more prime time games will be made available.

I just don't see those prices as a good deal!

    I ain't gettin it!

I believe you are referring to UVerse-AT&T's answer to cable and FIOS. It is similar to FIOS in that it is all fiber optic, not copper. My sister can get it 1/2 mile from me, but it is not yet available on my street. Good things: Not bound by same rules as cable companies, so all channels are digital, no analog-therefore they have much more bandwidth to offer HD channels. Bad thing-every tv needs a converter box, and they ain't cheap. Still, once it comes to my street, I'll be signing up.

UVerse, Yes, that's it. here's the link. https://uverse1.att.com/un/lsBuildOwnOrder.do

Cosmic, I'm not so sure the tech knew what he was talking about. I asked him if the service being offered would be "ala carte". I saw his eyes glaze over a little, then he answered yes. I don't believe he knew what I was asking.

I remember this issue being discussed on C-Span a few years ago, but have heard nothing of it since then.

No ala carte-get one, get 'em all. That's the catch. I had to learn all about it since I used to work for Comcast and we had to be up on the competition.

Since I live in the boonies, I get AT&T for phone, and both internet and TV are via a Direct Dish. Fortunately, I signed up with the Uverse bundle, which means, I can ditch Direct TV first chance I get... and yes I really really dont care for them.
I got everything they offer, and much more for far less via Verizon FiOS. The Internet is MUCHO faster, the channels are much more desireable and like I said, approx 30 dollars a month less.

ALSO, whatever you do with Direct, be very carefull of all the "Super" deals they are trying to line you up with. Be sure to read every bit of fine print. IF you sign up for the package that offers Free HBO and all that crap for 3 months, be very sure to cancel it after 3 months, or you will now be paying for it.
Also, be sure to read that if indeed you sign up for that plan, you have to stay with Direct for I believe 2 years.

Through FiOS, I had everything smokin and top of the line everything.
Direct gave me a Set Top Box that hooks up via yellow/Red/White connections... I sheet you not. I have a 1080 HD 52" Plasma, and they install this crap...No HDMI. :pity: and to top it off, get this:
First thing I did was ask the installer to please please be very careful of my brand-new hardwood floor.
It took him all of about 5 minutes to put a VERY nasty gouge in it...of course, that is not really Direct's fault, and the customer support I talked to didnt even baulk. She said to get an estimate, send in photo's and they will fix it...guess it just put a worse taste in my already sour mouth.

    So in short:
Yes I have the AT&T + Bundle that includes Direct TV and Internet.
Yes I will cancel Direct ASAP when Fiber Optics is available here. I do have that option since I am doing it all through AT&t..

PS: Verizon is now the leader in Fiber optics (They coin FiOS), and AT&T is quickly trying to catch up. It is the next boom on the horizon..and yes, you can also get the Ticket through FiOS...and the NFL network etc etc etc....

Verizon's sucks from a customer service standpoint. As an IT professional, I deal with them regularly in every facet of their business. And I dread it. They are way too big for their own good. Luckily we have options in the Tampa Bay area.

I've been very happy with DirecTV. My only beef is that the NFL Ticket keeps going up.
