I'm almost 35, and have never been to a concert...

Billy Joel is one of my faves and I am impatiently waiting for him to return to the area. I couldn't get tickets when he played the shows at Shea, and I heard he was phenomenal. I'm very disappointed that the tour with him and Elton John isn't coming here. I know that would be a kick *** show.

I have been to concerts, but I have never felt the need to go to them. Same thing with sporting events really. All of the experiences end the same way. Stuck in a crowded mess with a bunch of epople you no longer want to be around. It puts a damper on everything.

However, I had an awesome time at a Nine Inch Nails concert a few years back. But that may have been the free booze and the free lapdances that occurred. :shifty:

Okay so it may have been a strip club that was playing NIN on the stereo system...

But honestly, that concert rocked. But a big part of that was when it was over, the crowd was able to scatter rather quickly and allowed me to leave without traffic incident. :hi5:

Brother it all depends on the band. If you're not one for the crowds, the experience, etc, it really depends on the band. Some bands are ok live. Some are ****ty. Some are just amazing.

I like to say that I'd seen 'everybody' twice by time I was 20. Every other weekend I was at a show or an all-day fest. I'd hear bands I'd never heard of play the baddest stuff ever. Then I'd go buy the album and it was like drinking Coors Light! Conversely, I'd hear a group on the radio that were "Meh" and come away from the show with a completely different opinion of them and the music.

There's just something about being right there in front of the stage, slapping hands with the singer, just jumping around and grooving along.

Have you ever seen one man leading 50,000 people thru 16 bars of "**** YOU I WON'T DO WHAT YOU TELL ME!!" on a hot summer day? I was 16 years old and Evil Empire had just come out. :butthead:

I've probably been to 5 shows in the last 5+ years. I've mellowed and can't handle the volume or the people anymore. So it's about the music more than ever. But there's nothing like hearing a good band or artist live and experiencing what you can't get out of a CD. Some things just doesn't come thru in a recording.

If you ever want to see somebody guaranteed to be better than the record, go see an Eric Clapton show. I've seen him on a blues tour and a 'regular' tour. Phenomenal.

I might have seen the same tour (autumn 2005). Never been a big NIN fan, but that was easily one of the best shows I'd ever seen. Incredible the amount of effort that went into that PRODUCTION.

OT: my buddy and I were hanging out with these two nice chicas we'd met on the floor. Big fans. I felt like we were making steady progress until one of the 'scouts' came by near the end of the show to escort them to Mr. Reznor's dressing room.

It might have been that same tour. Queens of the Stone Age opened for them. I only went because the guy had an extra ticekt and begged me to go at the last second. He knew I hated concerts and promised to give me the dollar amount on the ticket if I didn't have fun.

Needless to say he go to keep his money...:pity:

And I agree, the production values were insane.

Tool is good at that too.

edit: I DO enjoy local shows. Nothing beats walking down the street in Oakland or Berkeley, CA on a Friday Night, and seemingly walking into any door off the street, to see a locla band playing music and a cold drink in your hand.

In fact, I was able to secure a couple of songs for a movie soundtrack for my friend that way. Best businees expense ever!

One thing I don't BS about, my brothas, are live shows.

Also saw KISS at Nassau Coliseum on New Year's Eve 1975 with Blue Oyster Cult opening up.

To save you the math, I had just turned 14. :wink2:

The wife went to one before we were together and says it was the best show she ever went too. Its one of the few concerts Id actually feel excited to go to.
Its coming to Houston but very sadly money is very tight at the moment so have to pass.

But for the most part, I just dont enjoy it. I get all the reasons why you should, but I just dont.

Yeah you can actually. I've seen a play with a 10 minute improved section, because the the actors felt like it. I've seen pyrotechnics at a play. I've seen audience participation at a play. I've seen all the things that you've brought up for why live music is great...at a play, I've even been a part of some them as an actor.

Again, I'm not faulting you for your passion, in fact I applaud it. But we are, really, talking about the same thing here, its just being viewed through your own passion. The only real difference is what is acceptable for the audience to do. That's a significant difference, but it really has nothing to do with music per se. If it was socially acceptable to dance, mosh, scream, flick a lighter, sing along (you can do this sometimes in theater), etc. at a play then it would happen. People like letting loose.

Actually music isn't what it use to be. Now the 70's and 80's would have been the best times. Nowadays not so much.

The differnce here Phin, is that I've been to many, many plays on Broadway in my life...and you've already said you've never been to a concert. I've seen both, and it's not the same by any stretch of the imagination. How can you possibly compare the two when you've never been to one? That's like trying to tell a combat vet what war is like when all you've done is play video games. You haven't experienced it, therefore you have no basis on which to compare bro.

During my trips to the theater, I've never seen the cast of "Wicked" combine two or three songs during a performance, or the cast of Les Miserables change the dialogue, or the cast of Phantom come out of character onstage.

Last year at the Iron Maiden show at MSG, the PA system blew halfway through the set. The band brought out soccer balls and played soccer onstage while the PA was fixed.

What you said is done during plays is something that happens rarely. It would be like me saying that all movies are like concerts because of what happens at midnight showings of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show". However, it happens at pretty much every concert.

The 70's and 80's were amazing, but there are still great shows to see. You just have to know where to look. :wink2:

Getting my tickets for Billy Joel/Elton John as we speak. :D

Gotta agree with Fin D on this one.

I personally have been to a few concerts in my time and I just don't see the appeal.

Then again, I love being in a packed stadium to watch football or baseball ...or in an arena watching Basketball or Hockey.

Nothing beats sports live. I just can't get into music concerts.

There's a difference between going and saying it's not for you and never having experienced and saying the same. If he experienced a live event and said "I don't like it" then there wouldn't be anything to discuss in this thread and it would probably be on page 3 now.

Yeah it would be horribly and terribly different.

Also just so you know, a recorded live version of a song sounds absolutely nothing like how it sounds in the venue when you're there. It's just a great overall experience. Some bands put on bad live shows of course, but some are great. It's an interactive experience.

I like seeing bands before they start playing sold out arenas. I hate being crammed in like a sardine.
