http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/story/938270.html Uh...Yeah! We need a cornerback. I'm starting to warm up to the idea of possibly taking Sean Smith in the 2nd.
While we are weak at the cornerback spot, I still think that the front seven matters more. Applying pressure to the Quarterback will make poor corners look decent and decent look good. We have to get someone to play opposite of Joey Porter. Roth isn't going to be easy to replace because he does such a good job of setting the edge but I think that we need a rotational pass rusher. A lot of people are high on Cameron Wake because of his highlights but they are just that - highlights. He hasn't taken part in an NFL game and never made it through training camp. Regardless of how he pans out, we still need another pass rusher to eventually supplant Joey Porter and possibly Roth. The question becomes, who can do that job for us and where do you take him? Cody Brown, whose been rumored a lot lately, can be selected in the second round and do a good job of rotating and pass rushing. However, you can take his teammate (Julius Williams), who some may make the case of him being just as good as Cody Brown, later in the draft. He can set the edge, get after the Quarterback and has good upper body strength. Other options include Larry English who some aren't a fan of but I personally am. He would be a good rotating pass rusher and he has a great motor. Also, Clay Matthews is an option. He's not likely to be selected because he doesn't have much production and time starting. He's gone from a scrawny, non-athletic 166 pound walk on out of high school to a late round value up until this past season and now is a borderline first rounder. That usually throws up red flags. And again, all this talk and not a single word about Virginia's Clint Sintim. Everyone keeps forgetting about him but he may be the most solid (can I say that?) player and arguably the safest at that twenty-fifth selection. He can do it all. He's played with his hand in the dirt and showed good quickness and strength off the edge. That strength also helped him set the edge very well. He can cover slot receivers and tight ends. He has no trouble with trash at his feet either. He is the ideal SOLB. Last, another option is Cincinnati's Connor Barwin whose a good player but doesn't have much experience playing OLB. He has played just about everywhere else it seems and he can get after the QB when asked to. If you do want to go CB, there are many options. I personally don't think that Sean Smith lasts until pick forty-four but I've been wrong many times before. Alphonso Smith could be gone by our pick. I expect Malcolm Jenkins to be gone while Illinois' Vontae Davis may be there but I don't think he is a likely selection. He's had character issues (is he coachable? The word that has spread says no.), has been playing off his reputation and despite being a contributor in run support, he still disappears. Can he play man to man? IMO, no. Darius Butler has been rumored too but he doesn't always show up in run support. I still like Sean Smith from those possibly available options. Don't want to forget about DJ Moore either.
I totally agree with that, which is why I want someone like English in the 1st. Sintim is another possibility at that spot, whom I would be happy with, as well as others. There are good pass rushers that could be had later in the draft, such as the names you had previously mentioned. It's going to be a tough call for Parcells & Co. to decide when to go after that guy. I also think it's a real long shot that Sean Smith will be there at #44, but I can dream..
A player that I like at forty four is San Jose State's Coye Francies. He's had some off the field trouble (gun charges I believe) but he's a good player. A bit inconsistent in run support IIRC but has good hips and can run.
Thanks. I haven't seen that much of him, but I will check him out. I hope he's not another Pacman with those gun charges.
I know the regime likes big Cb's but if a talent like that falls it will have to raise the eyebrows of our FO.
Nah, I could be wrong here but I believe it was a "wrong place at the wrong time" kind of issue. He's a good player though and has had good comments from coaches & teammates. Right but if you can't coach him, his talent doesn't matter too much. He'll be a pain in the *** and will force his way out. Then your back to square one, blowing draft picks in the first round.
It's his attitude not his size I'm worried about. This feels awfully similar to the Jake Long scenario. It's gotta be Butler at 25 at this rate.
