I was reading over at sportnews.com and listed on the 10 most overated free agents this year was Gibril Wilson, this is what they had to say.... http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php?t=521916
Don't know if he's overrated, but I do know trying nothing to improve our secondary isn't an option, so I'm glad we're at least taking a chance and hoping for the best. If Parcells and Co. like him who am I to doubt especially after what they did last year.
I personally think he is better than Bell, they have the same run defense skills, and are pretty close on pass defense with one major difference, Wilson will intercept passes, Bell does not. I can't speak for what happened with the Raiders last year because I never watch them, but I see a lot of the Giant games and read all the local papers that are all Giants and Jets.
We all see what happened with Randy Moss in Oakland. Now look at him, hopefully the same happens with Gibril.
PS Y. Bell just resigned with us per PFT. Bell will play strong safety this year for the Fins; newly-signed Gibril Wilson will play free safety.
Giants fans were VERY upset at losing Wilson and not being able to re-sign him after he was cut by Oakland. That tells me alot.
Yes. I am so excited. Yes. Yes. Yes. But know to awnser the question do I think Gibril Wilson is over rated. Well first just because you are over rated does not mean you are bad it just means that you are not living up to what people thought you were going to be. For example. Lebron James is overrated to me. I dont think he is as good as Michael Jordan but I still think he is a top 5 player in the NBA right now. So it depend on how you define over rated. I dont think Gibril Wison is over rated. Do you think Bill Parcells, Tony Ireland, and Tony Sparano would be so quick to jump on this guy if he was over rated? No they would'nt. Plus would you like to go play in Okland when coaches are getting fired left and right and every thing is chaos? I think like E said player give up in Okland. Going from a superbowl team to that mess in Okland no one would want to play there.
Wilson played pretty well as a free safety during that Super Bowl run. New York was down three cornerbacks for much of the playoffs. They faced Dallas (TO) and Green Bay (Jennings, Driver) on the road and New England (Brady's 50 TD's and Moss) in the big game and held it down. It's true that several teams that were interested in him last year thought he was a strong safety (including Oakland). We shall see.
And yet our own front office; ignorant to football operations though they may be still felt he was worth grabbing up rather quickly. For the time being, I'm going to give Ireland and Parcells the benefit of the doubt on this one.
Dont know much about him, however a guy I work with, big Giant fan, wasn't happy about losing him to Oakland and thinks he is a very good pick up for us. Additionally trust in Bill/Jeff/Tony that they can pick talent that will fit the scheme they want to run. That is key. Maybe the guy didn't perform well in Oakland (OK, who did?) but could be one of those guys who will excel in a particular way. Look at Porter, first year here, nothing. New defensive scheme, guy was #2 in sacks in the NFL. Scheme baby scheme.
anyone can be consoderd overrated if teams overpay for a player and they do not live up to their contract... 5 years, 27mil with only 8 garaunteed is right along the lines of where I would have liked him. In that sense, he isnt overrated.... Not to mention with him and Bell back there supporting the run, NOONE will be able to get into the second level... We have just improved our run defense at a minimum
Comparing him to Yeremiah Bell or calling him overrated doesn't mean much to me. What is important is that he's an upgrade to what we had--Renaldo Hill. I believe he's a player that will provide more to our defense than Renaldo. That's the only thing that matters IMO. Our defense got much better with signing him.
Nnamdi has been so good on a team so long he's the type that won't get unmotivated playing on a bad team. Damn he's good.
I watched film on Gibril Wilson in his final year in NY. I wanted him here as a FS. last year. Anybody that says that he has problems in coverage is an assclown. can' be any clearer. That "knock" sounds made up to me.
My personal opinion on the subject is that he is not overrated. I believe we just tremendously improved our secondary.
I was reading espn and I came across this little tidbit....G Wilson was supposed to be a dolphin. Why is that you ask? Because if you look at the two interceptation he had last year.... One was against the Jets and One against the Pats. Welcome to MIAMI!!!
http://www.profootballweekly.com/PFW/Features/Free+Agency/2009/top100.htm 49. Gibril Wilson S / None Age 27 / FA Type: Cut Wilson notched a career-high 129 tackles in 2008, but he was released less than a year after the Raiders signed him to a six-year, $39 million contact. He is a good bet to land a starting job elsewhere.
I like Parcells and Ireland. That said, they are not the best talent assessors when it comes to Wide Receivers and Defensive backs. Ernest Wilford, Chris Crocker and Keith Davis were only the most recent examples of their shortcomings in assessing those areas. They are magical evaluators of talent in the defensive front-seven, O-line and TE's. Not so much the smaller, faster guy who play further from the Line of Scrimmage. I am not saying Gibril Wilson will disappoint us. I think he will be good. But, many people assume Parcells and Ireland cannot make mistakes. This is clearly untrue if you look at their history of succeses and failures, especially with WR's and DB's.
Davon Bess is a good wide reciver. Ernest Wilford who saw that coming? I dont know how much you can blame that on them.
He was a really good player with the Giants. Made some big plays, which is what our secondary lacks. I'm not going to judge him based on what he did for one year in that disaster known as Oakland.
i was surprised when i saw u guys signed Gibril. I see him and Bell as the same player. I figured you guys would sign a great coverage safety to go alongside bell since bell is great in run help and not so much in pass coverage and also since CB is a position that needs addressing for u guys too and a great coverage FS would take a lot of burden off the Cb's.. just like we have Ed Reed at FS who is an excellent coverage safety and Dawan Landry at SS who is an excellent run help SS
I'm not sure where this "Gib isn't a FS" comes from since he played FS the year the Giants went to the superbowl and played extremely well.
Well, I blame them, since they chose him. I watched Jax games and he never impressed me, so I don;t know what they saw other than a big body. Bess was a great find. The best WRs Parcells ever had were forced on him: Terry Glenn and Terrell Owens. Now watch him go out and shock the world by taking a WR in round one. lol.
I just have to ask WHY ? Why did Oakland cut him ? No one here seems to want to answer that question, and until its addressed people like myself will look at this signing and say Hmmmmmmmm. I am no expert, and certainly don't know as much as a lot of guys on the board, but as a casual fan that looks really suspicious....why sign him to a 6 year deal and then cut him ? He made 129 tackles, which to me sounds like a lot, but yet they cut him......does this mean Oakland is just being Oakland again, or do they know something and just what could that be ????? Can someone discuss this so I can understand why us making this move is a good one ? Thanks if someone wishes to do this It would be appreciated.
I think Gibril is fine in coverage. Not to mention, he's good in run defense also. He's a good player and an upgrade to our prior option at FS--Renaldo Hill. This whole idea that your SS stops the run and your FS is coverage is flawed. Yeremiah Bell is easily our best S in pass coverage and still might be. Ed Reed is as strong against the run as he is against the pass.
no ed reed is not.. he's not a very good tackler at all. every now and then he will hit someone hard but he wiffs a lot. i was just using that as an example. i agree he's definitly an upgrade over hill
I hope wilson plays well I was excited when the phins signed him if only because i had him in the GM game
Well Gibril is 27 and has been in the NFL 5 years and already has had 3 100 tackle seasons, two of them with the Giants who have a stellar Front 7 so he was clearly making plays and not just mopping up for poor front 7 play like Bell was forced to do last year.
